Arrest of nuns in Chhattisgarh blatant misuse of law: CPI(M) MP John Brittas
In a post on X, Brittas also shared a letter written by him to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, expressing deep concerns and seeking his immediate intervention in the arrest of the two Catholic nuns from Kerala Sister Vandhana Francis and Sister Preethi by the Government Railway Police from the Durg railway station on the morning of July 25, and their subsequent judicial remand under the charges of human trafficking and forced religious conversion.
"The arrest of Kerala nuns Sr. Vandana Francis and Sr. Preethi at Durg on baseless trafficking and conversion charges is a disgrace. This is blatant misuse of the law to target minorities. Free the nuns and stop the hate campaign against those serving society!" Brittas said in a post on X.
According to media reports, the Kerala-based nuns were arrested in Chhattisgarh on charges of human trafficking and forced conversion raised by right-wing activists.
In his letter to the Chhattisgarh chief minister dated July 27, Brittas said according to information received, the two nuns had travelled from Agra to Durg to receive three women and a man accompanying them. These individuals had travelled from Jharkhand with proper consent, intending to work in the convent. However, upon arrival, all six were taken into custody by GRP personnel, reportedly on false allegations of human trafficking and forced religious conversion.
"According to information received, the two nuns had travelled from Agra to Durg to receive three adult girls and a man accompanying them. These individuals had travelled from Jharkhand with proper consent, intending to work in the convent.
"However, upon arrival, all six were taken into custody by GRP personnel, reportedly on false allegations of human trafficking and forced religious conversion," Brittas said.
The Communist Party of India leader added that reportedly, there was no indication of coercion nor any credible evidence to suggest conversion.
"However, latest reports indicate that the authorities have filed an FIR, and three adults including the two nuns have now been remanded to judicial custody," he said.
He called it a shocking development and said it appears to reflect "a growing trend of targeting minority communities under flimsy and communally charged allegations".
"Even more alarming is the reported confiscation of their mobile phones and the absence of any formal communication with the families of the detainees," Brittas said.
He also said the incident has caused "deep anguish in Kerala and across the country, given its potential implications for minority rights, and the misuse of anti-conversion provisions to criminalise lawful social or religious activity".
"It is in the interest of justice, constitutional values, and the secular fabric of our democracy that this matter be addressed with the utmost urgency.... I earnestly urge your good self to immediately intervene to secure the release of Sr. Vandhana Francis and Sr. Preethi, who remain under judicial custody," he said.
The Left leader also sought an "independent and impartial inquiry" into the background of the complaint, and the role played by right-wing groups in influencing police action that led to this "unwarranted" and "disturbing" development.

Inspired By Premanand Govind Sharan, Boy, 13, Flees Home To Become Seer
Gorakhpur: Inspired by Vrindavan-based spiritual guru Premanand Govind Sharan Ji Maharaj, a 13-year-old boy from Gorakhpur ran away from home to become a seer. The boy, identified as Aman Dubey, son of Amarnath Dubey, was eventually found near a ghat in Varanasi after a police-led search using CCTV footage and surveillance. "I want to become like Sant Premanand Maharaj. That's why I left home. I first came to Varanasi and planned to stay at a temple here for a few days before heading to Mathura to be in his refuge," Aman told the police after being rescued. A resident of Bimutia village under the Barhalganj police station limits, Aman left for school on August 1 as usual but didn't return home. When he didn't come back even by 8 pm, his worried family members launched a search and eventually filed a missing report the next day. Police began scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas, including bus stops and railway stations. In one of the recordings, Aman was seen boarding a train from Dohrighat towards Varanasi. His photo was shared with GRP and local police in Varanasi, who finally traced him near a ghat, police said. The GRP handed him over to the local child welfare body, Childline. His parents, accompanied by Gorakhpur police, left for Varanasi on Monday to bring him back, police said. According to Aman's father, he was highly influenced by spiritual discourses and regularly watched videos of Sant Premanand on social media. "He never shared anything with us, but he was deeply motivated by the teachings," said Amarnath Dubey, a furniture businessman. SHO of Barhalganj police station, Chandrabhan Singh, confirmed that the boy is safe and will be brought back home soon.

TMC mudslinging hits boiling point: Kalyan Banerjee steps down as party whip in LS, slams Mahua Moitra
He also expressed disappointment with the lack of action against party MP Mahua Moitra, with whom he had publicly clashed in April during the visit of a TMC delegation to the Election Commission of India. Since then, the two leaders have clashed several times, leaving the party red-faced. He announced his decision minutes after a meeting of the party's Lok Sabha MPs chaired by West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, who joined it virtually from Kolkata. New Delhi: The Trinamool Congress found itself in a spot Monday after party MP Kalyan Banerjee announced his decision to step down as the chief whip in Lok Sabha and lashed out at his party colleagues for their absence from the House, 'session after session'. At the meeting, Mamata also announced her decision to appoint nephew Abhishek Banerjee as the party's leader in the Lok Sabha, replacing Sudip Bandopadhyay. Sources told ThePrint that she also expressed her displeasure with the performance of the TMC Lok Sabha contingent. In the absence of Sudip, who has been unwell, it was Kalyan who was looking after the coordination of the TMC MPs in the Lok Sabha. There were indications in the lead up to Monday's meeting held at the party's office on Rajendra Prasad Road that there may be mudslinging. Just as Kalyan was entering the meeting, he spotted Moitra ahead of him and bitterly remarked to the assembled reporters that 'my day is ruined now'. After the meeting, in which he announced his decision to resign, he came out and said, 'Did not I tell you that this was going to be a bad day for me?' Later, he had an angry outburst while speaking to Kolkata-based television channels. 'She (Mamata) feels there is a lack of coordination in Lok Sabha, that's why I resigned. But is she aware of the situation? Most party MPs never even show up. And it is supposed to be my fault? Sudip (Bandopadhyay) never comes. Kakoli (Ghosh Dastidar) drops by occasionally. Can you believe that the south Kolkata MP is always absent? Only around 11 of our 29 MPs attend the House,' Kalyan said. He also expressed disappointment over the lack of disciplinary action against Moitra, alleging that she compared him to a 'pig' and called him 'sexually frustrated'. Earlier, he had also made personal remarks against Moitra, referring to her recent wedding with former BJD MP Pinaki Misra. 'Labeling a male colleague as 'sexually frustrated' isn't boldness — it's outright abuse. If such language were directed at a woman, there would be nationwide outrage, and rightly so. But when a man is the target, it's dismissed or even applauded. Let's be clear: abuse is abuse — regardless of gender. Such remarks are not just indecent, they reinforce a toxic double standard where men are expected to silently endure what would never be tolerated if roles were reversed. 'If Ms. Moitra thinks that flinging gutter insults will mask her own failures or distract from serious questions about her record, she is deluding herself. Those who rely on abuse instead of answers are not champions of democracy – they are its embarrassment, and the people of this country can see through that act,' he posted on X Monday.
