He also said the incident has caused "deep anguish in Kerala and across the country, given its potential implications for minority rights, and the misuse of anti-conversion provisions to criminalise lawful social or religious activity".
"It is in the interest of justice, constitutional values, and the secular fabric of our democracy that this matter be addressed with the utmost urgency.... I earnestly urge your good self to immediately intervene to secure the release of Sr. Vandhana Francis and Sr. Preethi, who remain under judicial custody," he said.
The Left leader also sought an "independent and impartial inquiry" into the background of the complaint, and the role played by right-wing groups in influencing police action that led to this "unwarranted" and "disturbing" development.

Barwani: Sendhwa police of Barwani district arrested a businessman, his wife, and an accountant on Monday in a case of cheating an NRI woman. Sendhwa city police in-charge BS Bisen told TOI that, on the complaint of Shubha Pathak, the wife of businessman Tushar Pathak, a Dubai-based NRI woman originally from Khargone, Anant Tayal, his wife Namita Tayal, and accountant Rehman were arrested. They were produced before the court, from where Anant and Rehman were sent to Sendhwa sub-jail and Namita Tayal to the central jail in Barwani. All three were absconding since the case was registered in November 2024. In this case, UCO Bank manager RK Jha was already arrested. Bisen said that Shubha Pathak is an NRI resident of Dubai and was the proprietor of Shreyas Sustainable Traders, which closed in 2020-21. Shubha's husband, Tushar Pathak, was also a partner with Sendhwa business tycoon Anant Tayal. Meanwhile, Supreme Texmart Limited Ludhiana issued an account payee cheque of Rs 21 lakh to 'Shreyas Sustainable Traders' for the outstanding amount. This cheque came into the hands of Anant Tayal, and on the basis of various documents and fake signatures of Shubha Pathak, he got an account opened by his wife in connivance with RK Jha, manager of UCO Bank Sendhwa.
