One organ donor can save up to nine lives: Tripura CM Saha

, urging people to come forward and pledge their organs to save lives.
The CM said this after flagging off the walkathon on the occasion of 15th Organ Donation Day at Amrakunja, Rabindra Satabarisiki Bhawan, Agartala today.
"There can be no greater humanitarian service than saving another person's life through organ donation. One
organ donor
can save up to eight or nine lives, even after death, by donating vital organs like kidneys, liver, lungs, and heart," he said.
CM Saha noted that while the concept of organ donation is gaining recognition, India still lags behind in comparison to several other countries due to a lack of public awareness and willingness to come forward.
"We must work together to change this mindset and spread awareness at all levels," he added.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the growing capabilities of Tripura's health infrastructure, stating that
kidney transplants
are now possible within the state.
He further informed that the state government is taking steps toward enabling
liver transplants
, with the establishment of the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) in 2023 being a major milestone.
Paying tribute to all organ donors and their families, CM Saha called them true heroes for their selfless contributions to humanity.
Dr Shankar Chakraborty, Medical Superintendent of GBP Hospital, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, and Dr Anup Kumar Saha, Principal of Agartala Government Medical College and others were present, as per the release.
Earlier on July 31, Tripura CM attended a Blood Donation Camp and Vanamahotsav at Tripura Medical College (TMC) Hospital, Hapania in Agartala.
Tripura CM also promoted community welfare by providing free Orthotics for Hip and Knee replacement patients and distributing spectacles to children under 14 years for a year as part of the program. This program was organised by TMC, Tripura Medical and Nursing College, and the Rotary Club of Agartala.

Tripura CM congratulates new medical officers
Agency: PTI Agartala, Aug 13 (PTI) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Wednesday congratulated the 216 General Duty Medical Officers (GDMOs) who were recommended for recruitment. The Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC) recommended those people for the post of GDMOs, paving the way for filling up 216 posts of doctors in government-run hospitals. However, it could not recommend any candidate against nine posts reserved for persons with disability. Taking to social media, the chief minister congratulated all the eligible candidates for GDMO posts. 'Heartfelt congratulations to all the newly recommended GDMO candidates. Wishing you great success as you embark on this noble journey, serving humanity with dedication and compassion. Your commitment to healthcare will make a difference," he wrote on Facebook. Earlier, the government recruited two superspeciality doctors against 16 sanctioned posts, while appointment letters for 45 specialist doctors will be issued shortly, said a senior health department official. 'The government had wanted to recruit as many as 72 specialist doctors, but did not find suitable candidates. Only 45 candidates were found eligible for specialist doctors", he said. All the eligible GDMOs will be appointed before Durga Puja in late September, the official said, adding that this is the first time that the government has gone for a mega recruitment drive for doctors. CM Manik Saha warns students about HIV, substance abuse; says Tripura saw 103% rise in drug seizures in 2023-24
Expressing concern about drug abuse and the spread of HIV in the Northeast, including Tripura, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha Tuesday said the state witnessed a steep rise of 103 per cent in drug seizures, while the destruction of seized drugs also saw an increase of 130 per cent in 2023-24. Speaking about HIV at a state-level programme titled 'Bell of Awareness' at Pragna Bhawan in Agartala on the occasion of International Youth Day, Saha said, 'At present, Tripura ranks fourth in the (Northeast) region.' Currently, the state government provides a monthly pension of Rs 2,000 to 3,433 HIV-positive individuals. Warning students about how drug addiction does not happen overnight but gradually, he said, 'You (students) must be cautious when it comes to drugs. Parents should pay special attention. Prime Minister Narendra Modi-ji and Union Home Minister Amit Shah-ji laid emphasis on building a nashamukt Bharat (drug-free India). Our government is also following a zero-tolerance policy on drugs to make Tripura nashamukt.' 'But it is not possible only with the efforts of the state government or any department. In this case, all sections of society are required to come forward to combat HIV/AIDS,' the chief minister said while urging to expand the activities of Red Ribbon Clubs in schools and colleges to combat the infection. At least 6,000 students from across the state attended the event. Saha said the state government is also thinking about spreading awareness in schools about HIV/AIDS and the dangers of drug abuse by incorporating it in the curriculum. According to the Health and Family Welfare department, Tripura reported having 1,845 people with HIV during the 2022-23 period, 1,790 people in 2023-24, and 1,185 in 2024-25 (till January this year). In January this year, Saha said that according to the National AIDS Control Organisation's (NACO) estimation report of 2023, Tripura saw 1.12 AIDS-related deaths for every 1 lakh unaffected people in 2021 – a figure that reduced to 0.99 in 2022 but again rose to 1.08 in 2023. Initiatives adopted by the state government to increase awareness about HIV include district-level sensitisation programmes involving the principals of 220 schools where drug abuse through injections was identified, an integrated health campaign in West Tripura district to identify cases of HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, syphilis in vulnerable groups, and using LED screens at 21 locations across Tripura to display messages related to HIV/AIDS and drug abuse through injections as part of a mass awareness campaign in January this year.
