Devin Townsend to take indefinite hiatus after North American tour

Perth Now29-04-2025

Devin Townsend will take an indefinite hiatus after the conclusion of his North American tour in May.
The Prog legend, 52, plans to take a break to "breathe and recalibrate" after going at it non-stop for more than three decades.
In a video update, he told fans on social media: 'For nearly 35 years, I've followed a creative path guided by instinct — each album, each tour, each project a new chapter in a story I've felt compelled to tell.
'My mind latches on to concepts, and I love chasing them down. That chase has made this journey wild, unpredictable, and deeply fulfilling.'
He continued: 'Over the years, I've heard it countless times: 'Dev, take a break… please.' But the flood of ideas, the excitement, and the support of incredible musicians and listeners have kept me going, kept me touring, and kept me grateful for a life on the road. That said, things have changed — especially since the pandemic.'
Townsend noted how tours have become a logistical challenge due to 'fewer venues, fewer crews, and a saturated touring circuit.'
Further to this, the musician's family need him.
He explained: 'And beyond the logistics, life has simply caught up with me: my parents need help, my dogs are on their last legs, the kids have moved out, 'The Moth' is nearly complete, and truthfully, I need some time to breathe and recalibrate.
'So I've made the decision to take a break from touring — an indefinite one. This upcoming North American run will be the last time you'll see me on stage for the foreseeable future.'
Townsend reassured fans that this does not mean he is retiring, insisting: 'I'll be performing until my final breath."
He went on: 'Touring has been a beautiful, exhausting constant in my life, and for once, I'm listening to the voice that says: slow down. I want to create from a place of calm inspiration rather than frantic obligation. And until I can truly be there for the people who rely on me, my creativity won't be at its best.'
Townsend's final concert of his jaunt takes place May 23 in Los Angeles.

Shakira's Boston concert cancelled at last minute

Shakira's concert in Boston, Massachusetts on Thursday night (29.05.25) was cancelled just hours before she was due to take to the stage. The pop superstar had been due to take her 'Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran Tour' to the city's fabled Fenway Park venue, but the gig was called off at the last minute with organisers offering refunds and putting the cancellation down to "unforeseen circumstances". Another concert featuring Jason Aldean and Brooks Dunn scheduled for Friday (30.05.25) was also scrapped. A statement posted on Fenway Park's social media pages explained: "Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Shakira and Jason Aldean and Brooks Dunn performances originally scheduled for May 29th and May 30th, respectively, at Fenway Park have been canceled. Refunds will be available at your point of purchase. We apologize for the inconvenience." No further details were given but reports suggest the gigs were cancelled due to structural problems at the venue. A source told PEOPLE: "During a routine pre-show check, structural elements were identified as not being up to standard, so the shows were canceled. All team members are safe." A number of comments posted on Fenway's social media statement suggested there was a problem with the stage roof, but officials have not commented on the suggestion. Both shows were part of the Fenway Concert Series which was due to kick off with Shakira's show on Thursday (29.05.25). The concert series runs until September and also features acts including Hozier, The Lumineers, the Jonas Brothers, Chris Brown, The Who, and My Chemical Romance. Hozier is the next act due to take to the stage at Fenway Park with two gigs scheduled for 23 and 24 June. Shakira had already travelled to Boston before the show was cancelled. She announced her arrival in the city on Wednesday (28.05.25) by sharing a picture of a table full of sweet treats on her Instagram page and writing: "Hello, Boston! What a sweet welcome!" The pop star is due to return to the stage on Saturday (31.05.25) at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. The 'Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour' kicked off in Brazil in February and the North American leg of the tour started in Charlotte, North Carolina on May 13 . It will include stops in cities such as Miami, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and more before concluding on June 30 in San Francisco, California. The tour will then go to Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Peru.

Jennifer Lawrence's latest film ‘Die My Love' secures $24 million global distribution deal

Jennifer Lawrence's latest film 'Die My Love' has secured a $24 million global distribution deal. It marks the largest acquisition at this year's Cannes film market, with the multi-territory agreement struck by streaming service Mubi and includes North American rights to the feature, which also stars Robert Pattinson. According to Variety, it was also brokered by 193, a new sales company launched by Legendary and headed by industry veteran Patrick Wachsberger. The company brought 'Die My Love', directed by Lynn Ramsey, to Cannes as part of its inaugural slate. It premiered in competition at the festival and in a statement about the distribution deal struck on the back of its showing at the festival, Patrick said: 'Securing global sales on four high-profile films, one of which having already had a successful premiere, affirms the strength of our storytelling and the trust our global partners have placed in us. This is a fantastic start for our company and a signal of the compelling projects we will continue to deliver.' Sales for 'Die My Love' extended far beyond the Mubi deal, with rights sold in the Baltics, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, the Middle East, Mongolia, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Scandinavia and Serbia, Croatia and Montenegro, among other territories. Also included in 193's Cannes slate was 'Scandalous!', a biographical romance depicting the relationship between Kim Novak and Sammy Davis Jr. The film marks the directorial debut of Colman Domingo and stars Sydney Sweeney and David Jonsson. It sold to distributors in Australia, New Zealand, Greece, Spain, the U.K. and others. 'The Surgeon', written and directed by oncologist-turned-filmmaker Roshan Sethi and starring Michelle Yeoh, also found buyers across multiple territories. Roshan reunites with Patrick and producer Basil Iwanyk following their previous collaboration on 'John Wick'. Distribution deals were confirmed for Australia and New Zealand, Israel, South Africa and the Philippines. Finally, the reimagining of the cult classic 'The Toxic Avenger', a dark comedy starring Peter Dinklage, Kevin Bacon and Elijah Wood, was picked up in several major territories. These include Germany and Austria, Japan, Italy and Britain.

Lorde turned to MDMA to overcome stage fright

Lorde overcame stage fright with MDMA and psilocybin therapy. The 'Royals' hitmaker has suffered from debilitating nerves since she was a child but underwent numerous sessions between 2022 and 2024 where she would take psychedelic drugs in a supervised setting and they left her feeling much more free and at ease with exploring new cities before her shows instead of dreading a panic attack in her hotel room. She told Rolling Stone magazine: 'I was touring without stage fright for the first time." Freed from her fears, Lorde found she was able to connect with her audience in a new way. She said: 'I would play 'Supercut', and all of a sudden there was a hook around my guts and everyone in the room was having the same feeling, [like] there'd been a huge pressure change. It made me realise how much I love and kind of need that very deep, visceral response to feel my music.' The 28-year-old star also found the psychedelic treatments helped improve her relationship with her body, having been in the grips of an eating disorder. She said of a realisation she had: '[I've] been in the same body [my] whole life. I understood it. I was like, 'These arms climbed the jungle gym. And they held an award on a TV show.' I understood the whole spectrum of it and began to enjoy the complexity and ruggedness.' Lorde recalled the night before she released her 2021 album 'Solar Power' and how she was consumed with how she never felt thin enough. She said: 'I felt so hungry and so weak. I was on TV [that] morning, and I didn't eat because I wanted my tummy to be small in the dress. It was just this sucking of a life force or something.' Months later, ahead of the North American leg of her 'Solar Power' tour, Lorde wrote an email newsletter to her fans explaining the shows had "set so much right" inside her but she was still consumed by counting calories. She said: 'I don't know how those two things can be true: that I'm having this really amazing, rich experience of playing the shows and meeting these kids, and [yet] I'm also looking at the pictures afterward and feeling deep loathing at the sight of my beautiful, tiny tummy, thinking it was so unforgivable what I had allowed it to become." These days, Lorde has a healthier relationship with food and her body and it has helped her regain her focus on her music. She said: 'Once I stopped doing that, I had all this energy for making stuff. 'I could see that if I cut that cord, maybe I would get something back that I needed to do my work. And it was totally true. Got it all back, and way more.'
