Kuching Division Journalists' Association urges continued reforms for media freedom

Borneo Post03-05-2025

Teo said they laud Malaysia for improving its standing in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index, rising 19 spots to 88th place, based on the latest assessment by RSF.
KUCHING (May 4): The Kuching Division Journalists' Association (KDJA) has called for continued reforms to promote media freedom, in conjunction with the World Press Freedom Day yesterday.
Its president Ronnie Teo said they laud Malaysia for improving its standing in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index, rising 19 spots to 88th place, based on the latest assessment by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
He stated that the country recorded a score of 56.09 this year, marking a rebound from last year when it dropped to 107th with a score of 52.07.
'Malaysia's improved ranking is an affirmation of the resilience of our media professionals and the gradual reforms, aimed at strengthening press freedom.
'This progress signals a growing recognition of the vital role that independent journalism plays in shaping an informed society,' he said in a statement yesterday.
Ronnie added that while this rise is encouraging, the country's press freedom 'remains classified as problematic'.
Reiterating the need for continued reforms, he said issues such as media ownership concentration and outdated laws still pose challenges to true editorial independence.
As such, he said this ranking should serve as motivation to push for greater media transparency, stronger protections for journalists, and the repeal of restrictive laws.
'A free press is the backbone of democracy, and Malaysia must continue working toward an environment where journalists can report without fear or interference,' he added.
The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 to be World Press Freedom Day, observed to raise awareness of the importance of the press' freedom as well as to remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The World Press Freedom Day also marks the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration, a statement of free press principles put together by African newspaper journalists in Windhoek in 1991.
This year's World Press Freedom Day global commemoration focuses on the profound influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on journalism and media under the theme 'Reporting in the Brave New World—The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media'. The Prime Minister stated that the strengthening relationship between the two nations represents a pivotal shift in Malaysia's strategy towards Africa. 'It is clear that Guinea-Bissau will be a key country to leverage our positive momentum in West Africa and potentially into the broader African continent,' he said at a joint press conference with visiting Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embalo yesterday. Anwar said he has encouraged Malaysian corporations, including PETRONAS and FGV Holdings, to explore potential ventures in Guinea-Bissau. 'Hopefully, PETRONAS, FGV and others will explore potential opportunities not only in Guinea-Bissau but also for it to be a base to expand further into Africa and beyond,' he added. While acknowledging that past ties had been low-key, the Prime Minister said the renewed engagement reflects a shared ambition to forge stronger ties in diverse sectors such as the halal industry, Islamic finance, energy and capacity building. 'President Embalo has a vision to engage Malaysia not just bilaterally but as a bridge into Asean,' he said, reaffirming Malaysia's commitment to inclusive diplomacy anchored under Asean centrality. The Prime Minister also welcomed the deepening of ties between the two nations. 'Malaysia will be your second home. My colleagues, the people of Malaysia and I are very pleased that you have taken the initiative to establish a new relationship based on trust and affinity with Malaysia,' he told Embalo, Bernama reported. Embalo, in turn, hailed Malaysia as a 'sister country' and expressed confidence in the potential for a strong and enduring partnership. 'I believe that starting today, we are not only connected by heart but also ready to work closely on many fronts,' he said. He shared Guinea-Bissau's intention to learn from Malaysia's experience and best practices in various fields, including education, healthcare and industrial development. 'You can count on us. Guinea-Bissau wants to be Malaysia's key partner in Africa, just as Malaysia can be our key partner not only in Asia but globally,' he added. Embalo is undertaking a three-day official visit to Malaysia, marking the first-ever visit by a head of state from Guinea-Bissau. Earlier, Embalo was accorded an official welcome ceremony at the Perdana Putra Complex, where he inspected a guard of honour mounted by three officers and 103 members of the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (ceremonial), led by Major Mohamad Waqiyudin Abd Rahman. Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Cabinet Ministers, senior government officials and diplomats. Following the ceremonial protocols, Embalo signed the guest book before proceeding to a bilateral meeting with Anwar. Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau established diplomatic relations in November 1974. In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with Guinea-Bissau amounted to RM4.1mil, with exports to Guinea-Bissau valued at RM4.04mil and imports at RM0.06mil.

UPM ready to welcome students from Guinea-Bissau

SERDANG: Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) is ready to accept students from Guinea-Bissau, paving the way for strategic cooperation with African nations, which are seldom seen as development partners in the field of higher education. Its vice-chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah said the university is always prepared to support its counterparts from the African continent, viewing the visit by Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló to the UPM campus here today as a valuable opportunity to forge mutually beneficial bilateral ties. He said Guinea-Bissau, an agriculture-based nation, has chosen UPM as a strategic partner for education and skills training. 'The President himself expressed his intention to send students to UPM in agro-bio-related fields, particularly to the Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, as these are their current primary needs,' he told Bernama and RTM. Ahmad Farhan noted that Guinea-Bissau is currently focused on undergraduate-level education to produce a skilled workforce capable of driving its economy. 'Usually, countries come to discuss sending PhD students, but Guinea-Bissau is still at an early stage. They need basic-level capacity development first,' he said. When asked about the implementation of the collaboration, he said it remains in the preliminary stage and no official decision has been made yet. Earlier, Embaló was briefed by Ahmad Farhan on the university's Food Security Plan, which outlines its key strategies in addressing food security challenges through biotechnology and innovation. The President is currently in Malaysia for a three-day official visit.
