PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has described Malaysia's ties with Guinea-Bissau as a strategic gateway for expanding the nation's presence across the African continent, positioning the West African republic as a vital entry point for trade, investment and diplomatic engagement.
The Prime Minister stated that the strengthening relationship between the two nations represents a pivotal shift in Malaysia's strategy towards Africa.
'It is clear that Guinea-Bissau will be a key country to leverage our positive momentum in West Africa and potentially into the broader African continent,' he said at a joint press conference with visiting Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embalo yesterday.
Anwar said he has encouraged Malaysian corporations, including PETRONAS and FGV Holdings, to explore potential ventures in Guinea-Bissau.
'Hopefully, PETRONAS, FGV and others will explore potential opportunities not only in Guinea-Bissau but also for it to be a base to expand further into Africa and beyond,' he added.
While acknowledging that past ties had been low-key, the Prime Minister said the renewed engagement reflects a shared ambition to forge stronger ties in diverse sectors such as the halal industry, Islamic finance, energy and capacity building.
'President Embalo has a vision to engage Malaysia not just bilaterally but as a bridge into Asean,' he said, reaffirming Malaysia's commitment to inclusive diplomacy anchored under Asean centrality.
The Prime Minister also welcomed the deepening of ties between the two nations.
'Malaysia will be your second home. My colleagues, the people of Malaysia and I are very pleased that you have taken the initiative to establish a new relationship based on trust and affinity with Malaysia,' he told Embalo, Bernama reported.
Embalo, in turn, hailed Malaysia as a 'sister country' and expressed confidence in the potential for a strong and enduring partnership.
'I believe that starting today, we are not only connected by heart but also ready to work closely on many fronts,' he said.
He shared Guinea-Bissau's intention to learn from Malaysia's experience and best practices in various fields, including education, healthcare and industrial development.
'You can count on us. Guinea-Bissau wants to be Malaysia's key partner in Africa, just as Malaysia can be our key partner not only in Asia but globally,' he added.
Embalo is undertaking a three-day official visit to Malaysia, marking the first-ever visit by a head of state from Guinea-Bissau.
Earlier, Embalo was accorded an official welcome ceremony at the Perdana Putra Complex, where he inspected a guard of honour mounted by three officers and 103 members of the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (ceremonial), led by Major Mohamad Waqiyudin Abd Rahman.
Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Cabinet Ministers, senior government officials and diplomats.
Following the ceremonial protocols, Embalo signed the guest book before proceeding to a bilateral meeting with Anwar.
Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau established diplomatic relations in November 1974.
In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with Guinea-Bissau amounted to RM4.1mil, with exports to Guinea-Bissau valued at RM4.04mil and imports at RM0.06mil.

MIDF Research: Oil prices under pressure as supply outpaces demand

KUALA LUMPUR: Crude oil prices are expected to remain under pressure and could fall below US$65 per barrel (pb) due to persistent oversupply and weaker demand projections, according to MIDF Amanah Investment Bank Bhd (MIDF Research). However, MIDF Research noted that prices may stabilise over the longer term, even as inventories continue to rise. Sentiment surrounding trade policy developments between the United States (US) and China remains a significant risk to market movements, it said in a note today. 'Natural gas and liquified natural gas (LNG) are expected to see a rebound after May 2025's maintenance round concluded for most of the global gas and LNG facilities. 'Nevertheless, the downside risks to the lower oil price remain on new exploration projects, but may be beneficial for onshore storage, long-term tankers and retail fuel,' it said. MIDF Research opines that the scenarios of the global oil market and global economy will continue to keep Brent crude oil price within the US$60-65 pb range, averaging around US$62 pb in June 2025. 'This lower expectation is considering the risks of post-US trade tariff pause, as well as the stockpiling of oil inventories in the near term,' said MIDF Research. Meanwhile, the investment bank said ASEAN collaborations have offered a brighter outlook for the oil and gas (O&G) sector. MIDF Research stated that Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) is continuing its aggressive exploration and production (E&P) activities in the upstream sector, despite lower crude oil prices. Meanwhile, the midstream and downstream divisions are expected to turn towards sustainability and green energy solutions, integrating these initiatives into their operations. 'During the ASEAN summit that concluded in May 2025, the transportation and logistics of LNG and carbon capture and storage (CCS) were highlighted as strategic priorities for the region. 'More focus was set on renewable energy and hydrogen projects to be integrated with the conventional O&G developments, providing a balanced and sound energy transition as highlighted in Malaysia's National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR),' it noted. MIDF Research added that regional cooperation is likely to expand through energy security, carbon credit management, Environmental Corporation America (ECA) compliance and CCS solutions. 'In addition, we opine that domestic demand and robust LNG exports will continue to locally support the sector. 'Overall, we retain a 'Neutral' view on the O&G sector, as it continues to face challenges, primarily from oil price volatility, driven by output hikes from the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries plus (OPEC+) and non-OPEC producers, including sluggish global demand due to tariff-related uncertainties,' it added.

Anwar to contact Thai PM over Thailand-Cambodia border dispute

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he would contact his Thai counterpart Paetongtarn Shinawatra today regarding the border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia. Anwar said that as the ASEAN Chair, Malaysia took note of the developments in both countries. 'We will issue a statement (on the outcome of the discussion with Paetongtarn) later,' he told reporters after performing Friday prayers at Surau Al-Ikhwan, Desa Pinggiran Putra, near here today. On May 28, Thai and Cambodian troops were involved in a brief skirmish in Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province and Cambodia's Preah Vihear province, which reportedly resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier. Cambodia has since announced its intention to bring the border dispute to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Thailand, meanwhile, has reportedly reiterated its commitment to resolving the issue peacefully in accordance with international law, as well as existing agreements and memoranda with Cambodia. Malaysia assumed the ASEAN Chairmanship from Laos on Jan 1 this year, under the theme Inclusivity and Sustainability, reflecting the country's aspirations to build a united and prosperous ASEAN. This marks Malaysia's fifth time chairing ASEAN, having previously held the role in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015.

Federal Court ruling on SIS forum fatwa appeal set for June 19

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Court will deliver its ruling on June 19 in the appeal filed by SIS Forum (Malaysia) against a fatwa issued by the Selangor religious authorities, which declared the organisation deviant and contrary to Islamic teachings. The matter was confirmed by Datuk Zainul Rijal Abu Bakar, counsel for the Selangor Fatwa Committee, when contacted today. 'The court informed the parties of the decision date via email on May 20,' he said. In addition to the Selangor Fatwa Committee, the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) and the Selangor government are also named as respondents in the appeal. On Aug 21, 2023, the Federal Court granted leave to SIS Forum and its founder, Zainah Mahfoozah Anwar, to appeal against the Court of Appeal's earlier decision dismissing their bid to annul the fatwa. In a 2-1 majority decision, the Court of Appeal held that the fatwa issued by the Selangor Fatwa Committee did not constitute a final decision and, therefore, could not be challenged by way of judicial review. SIS Forum and Zainah had appealed to the Court of Appeal after the High Court dismissed their application for a judicial review on Aug 27, 2019. The fatwa, gazetted by the Selangor State Government on July 31, 2014, declared SIS Forum, as well as any individual or group subscribing to liberalism and pluralism, as deviant and contrary to Islamic teachings. The fatwa further directed that any publication espousing liberal or pluralist views be banned and seized, and urged the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to censor social media content deemed contrary to Islamic teachings and syariah law.
