Nat Geo announces winners of photo challenge: See images celebrating Earth's beauty
From a group of playful otters vying over a fresh fish to weeping plum trees glistening in the rain, the winners of a National Geographic contest open to amateur photographers have captured the diversity and beauty of Earth.
National Geographic explorer and wildlife filmmaker Bertie Gregory announced the winners of the "NatGeoYourShotOurHome" contest on Wednesday, April 30, saying they all showcase "the majesty of our wonderful planet."
The British filmmaker, who served as guest curator for the competition, told USA TODAY that he was honored to help select the winners, remarking how the collection shows "just how lucky we are to share this planet with such an incredible diversity of life."
"From the bank mynas (birds) learning to live amongst us to the beautiful social chaos of an otter family, from epic mountain sunsets to a delicate weeping plum tree - not to mention taking a closer look at the busy lives of ants," Gregory said about the winning selection.
'Every day should be Earth Day'
The filmmaker, whose is hosting new Disney+ series "Secrets of the Penguins" added that though April is a designated month to celebrate the planet, "every day should be Earth Day."
The challenge, which took place in April and ran through Earth Day on April 22, saw thousands of entries from Japan to Patagonia and beyond, Nat Geo said.

Among the challenge winners is Hidenobu Suzuki, who submitted an unreal-looking photo taken in in the Suzuka Forest Garden in Japan.
'"The weeping plum trees glistening in the rain looked so beautiful-just like a Japanese painting," Suzuki said. "I was so moved that I wrote this description: In the hush of rain, the weeping plum glistens-its petals, like silk, kissed by raindrops. Fallen blossoms whisper on the damp earth, a fleeting poem of transience."
Another winner, Dhaval Bhadania based in Gujarat, India, described the moment he saw birds known as bank mynas and captured a winning image.
"During one of my regular Sunday outings, while passing below an overbridge, I noticed these bank mynas coming out from a hole in the bridge wall," he said. "The mynas had made their nest in the hole. I waited there and watched them for some time. These types of bird behaviors and unexpected sightings prompt me to capture more amazing moments and share my visual stories."

Attenborough related how a testy director of operations refused to believe the equipment had a fault. 'So he put it on and I'm happy to say he went under the water and came up even quicker than I did because there was actually a fault.' Ocean, Attenborough's documentary which launched this weekend on National Geographic streaming platforms to mark World Oceans Day, looks at life underwater and confronts the loss of much biodiversity due to man-made ocean warming. Attenborough told William: 'The awful thing is that it's hidden from you and from me and most people. The thing which I was appalled by when I first saw the shots taken for this film, is that what we have done to the deep ocean floor is just unspeakably awful. 'I mean, if you did anything remotely like it on land, everybody would be up in arms,' he said. 'If this film does anything – if it just shifts public awareness – it'll be very, very important, and I only hope that people who see it will recognise that something must be done before we destroy this great treasure.' It seems like the original film has been around for much longer than 11 years, given the influence it's had on Hollywood, from those awesome "gun fu" stunt sequences to Keanu Reeves' movie star revival. The scrappy indie thriller cast Reeves as an ex-hitman who puts retirement on hold for a righteous revenge mission, and since then there have been three more "Wick" flicks, a prequel TV series and now a new cinematic spinoff. "Ballerina" features Ana de Armas as a dancer/assassin raised in the same criminal organization that unleashed Wick. 'John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum' (2019) Excommunicated from his assassin's guild and with a $14 million bounty on his head, courtesy of the all-powerful High Table, John gets into nasty blade-throwing brawls and even rides a horse through New York to escape a city full of secret killers. He makes his way to Morocco, seeking help from friend and fellow dog lover Sofia (Halle Berry), and winds up back in the Big Apple for a climactic throwdown with martial-arts master Zero (Mark Dacascos). The operatic action and intriguing exposition is there, but this solid third installment winds up a good but not great effort, owing to a convoluted last act and underdeveloped supporting characters. 4. 'Ballerina' (2025) Although Wick is a master of various weaponry, Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas) is down to use everything but the kitchen sink. (And probably would use that if a sink was just hanging out somewhere.) A rookie assassin, Eve goes rogue from her crime family to track down the cult who murdered her father. Her path of vengeance includes an amazing flamethrower shootout and a brawl involving dinner plates as she makes new friends and enemies, plus faces off with Wick himself. It's a spinoff movie that both feels like a "John Wick" noir thriller as well as something interestingly original. 3. 'John Wick: Chapter 4' (2023) In this very globetrotting installment, Wick's had enough and goes on the offensive against the High Table. The Marquis (Bill Skarsgård), a sadistic new antagonist, sends Wick's old friend, blind martial-arts master Caine (Donnie Yen), after him and their tussle lands both in a finale for all the marbles in Paris. The fourth "Wick" is the best in terms of sheer jaw-dropping action sequences. The festival of bangers includes a waterfall-filled throwdown in a German nightclub, a "doll house" fight seen from overhead where Wick lights people up with fire bullets, and a most excellent and electrifying traffic jam at the Arc de Triomphe. 2. 'John Wick' (2014) The first "Wick" is high up for any fan, either for the sheer action-movie chutzpah or the fact that it's the one where the bad guys kill a puppy. And especially because they murdered the adorable last gift given to John by his late wife, it's completely understandable why he'd re-enter the fray he worked to get out of and just wreck a whole bunch of enemies. We would, too, Johnny! Willem Dafoe and John Leguizamo are the recognizable faces, Reeves turns in a terrific performance as our hero hunts down the canine-murdering culprit – a Russian crime boss' son (Alfie Allen) – and the legend of the relatable hard-luck assassin begins in memorable fashion. 1. 'John Wick: Chapter 2' (2017) As good as the first movie was, "Chapter 2" packs in all the great stunts and jaw-dropping gunfights but is really where the rules and mythology of John's world begin to fill out and become this epic story. For one, viewers learn more about the High Table, the assassin hotel The Continental and John's long history in it. Wick is forced to fulfill a blood oath "marker" held by underworld boss Santino D'Antonio (Riccardo Scamarcio), the man who helped him retire, and much chaotic ruckus ensues as Wick returns full bore into this dangerous world. John winds up murdering the guy on Continental grounds – a huge no-no – and sets the stage for him being a wanted man through two more movies.

Jonathan Bailey Recalls Awkward Moment In "Wicked"
Jonathan Bailey has admitted he and his Wicked co-star Ariana Grande had a bit of an awkward moment when they were still getting to know one another. The British actor plays Fieryo in both Wicked and its much-hyped sequel, shooting both films back-to-back in a rather hectic time for his career, during which he was also making the TV shows Bridgerton and Fellow Travellers. As a result, Jonathan told British GQ that his rehearsal time on the movie was rather limited, with the Emmy nominee having just three days to prepare before filming began. 'I remember having four hours to learn how to do a dance move,' he explained. 'I did it with Ari, headbutted her, and was like, 'Gotta go!'' He quipped: 'I think she might have even headbutted me, but it was a meeting of minds, literally.' Fortunately, despite the literal tête-à-tête, he and the "Twilight Zone" singer went on to forge a strong friendship, at one point even attending Wimbledon together during their Wicked downtime. Last year, Jonathan spoke candidly about the toll that shooting multiple projects at the same time took on one particular aspect of his appearance. He claimed that having a perm for Bridgerton and a straight do for Fellow Travellers left his hair 'looking like coral' – and as a result, he had to sport a 'big old toupée' to play Fiyero in Wicked. 'I'm in the choreography so it's flapping about!' he joked to Variety during an Actors On Actors interview with Naomi Watts. Wicked For Good sees Jonathan once again sharing the screen with the likes of Cynthia Erivo, Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Yeoh, in the movie adaptation of the stage musical's second act. The first trailer for the sequel was released on Wednesday night, ahead of its worldwide release on Friday 21 November.
