JOHOR BAHRU: Police arrested a 40-year-old Singaporean man after he was involved in a road rage incident and alleged vandalism against another car around Tun Aminah, Skudai yesterday.
Johor Bahru Utara (North) police chief ACP Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh said after a 31-year-old local man lodged a report about the incident at 3.01 pm, a team from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Johor Bahru Utara police headquarters (IPD) arrested the suspect at about 6.20 pm yesterday (June 8) and made several seizures.
'The complainant stated that while driving his BMW at 2.39pm in the Tun Aminah area, he was honked at by a Toyota Altis with a Singapore registration number, whose driver was dissatisfied because his path was blocked. An argument ensued and the suspect allegedly kicked the complainant's car, causing damage. However, the complainant did not suffer any injuries,' he said in a statement today.
Balveer Singh said the suspect had no previous criminal record and tested negative for drugs.
He said the suspect would be brought to the Johor Bahru Court tomorrow (June 9) for a remand application for the case to be investigated under Section 426 of the Penal Code (for mischief and damage of property) and Section 509 of the Penal Code (utterance of insult).
Police said anyone with information related to the case can contact the Johor Bahru Utara IPD at 07-5563122. Earlier, police detected a viral video on Facebook showing two men arguing on a public road.

Ukrainian tenor Gorai dies while volunteering in Sumy, Odesa opera says

(Reuters) -Tenor Vladislav Gorai, a soloist with the Odesa National Opera, died on Sunday while engaged in a volunteer mission in the northern region of Sumy bordering Russia, opera officials said. More than three years after launching its war against Ukraine, Russia moved further into Sumy last week, threatening the regional capital in a dual advance with fierce frontline fighting and relentless missile and drone attacks. "The whole world knew the voice of Vladislav Vikentiiovych, but his heart belonged to Ukraine," the opera said in a Facebook statement on Sunday. "Even in the darkest times, he did not stay aside - he helped, volunteered, supported." It added, "The Odesa National Opera has been orphaned." It was not immediately clear how Gorai, designated in 2013 an Honoured Artist of Ukraine, died. Reuters could not independently verify the report. On its website, the opera says Gorai worked with the Odesa theatre since 1993, after graduating in 1988 from the music faculty of the Vinnytsia State Pedagogical Institute. He participated in international opera projects in cities such as Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, Lyon, Strasbourg and Zurich. Among the international music houses with which he worked were Madrid's Teatro Monumental and Romania's State Opera and Ballet Theater. He toured Britain, Canada, Italy and the United States, among other countries. (Reporting by Lidia Kelly in Melbourne; Editing by Clarence Fernandez)

Deadly Gerik bus tragedy shakes nation, comes less than a month after fatal FRU crash

KUALA LUMPUR: The nation was shaken once again in the early hours today by a tragic accident that claimed the lives of 15 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). The fatal crash occurred at 1.10 am at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Tasik Banding in Gerik, Perak, involving a chartered bus transporting UPSI students back to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, and a Perodua Alza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) that was traveling in the same direction, from Jeli, Kelantan to Gerik. This heartbreaking tragedy comes less than a month after a fatal crash on May 13, which claimed the lives of nine members of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) in Teluk Intan, Perak. According to reports, the crash occurred when the bus rear-ended the Alza, causing the bus to overturn and the MPV to veer into a roadside ditch. A total of 48 victims were accounted for, including 13 who perished at the scene and were taken to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) in Ipoh, and two others who succumbed to their injuries at Gerik Hospital. Seven more victims were admitted to the red zone (critical condition), 20 to the yellow zone (semi-critical), and six to the green zone (minor injuries) at Gerik Hospital. At press time, authorities have yet to release an official list of the deceased or injured victims. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, in a Facebook post, announced that UPSI has established an operations room and hotline. Accommodation assistance for the victims' families is also being coordinated with Ungku Omar Polytechnic in Ipoh and the Gerik Community College. UPSI vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff said that the university has assigned one staff member to each affected family to ensure that all next of kin receive appropriate assistance. For the record, fatal bus accidents have plagued Malaysian roads for years. On Dec 24, 2016, a total of 14 people were killed and 16 were injured when an express bus plunged 20 feet into a ravine at KM137 of the North-South Expressway near Kampung Jayo, Muar, Johor. Malaysia's worst recorded bus accident occurred on Aug 21, 2013, when 37 people, including the driver, died and 16 were injured after a bus carrying 52 passengers plunged 60 meters into a ravine at KM3.6 of Jalan Genting Highlands-Kuala Lumpur.

Father refuses bail for son who admitted to repeated rape

PETALING JAYA: A father in Batu Pahat, Johor, made a firm decision today not to post the RM1,500 bail set by the magistrate's court for his 16-year-old son, who pleaded guilty to raping a female acquaintance earlier this month. The 40-something-year-old father stated his intention behind his decision was to teach his son a lesson, reported Berita Harian. The teen, who appeared before magistrate Arun Noval Dass, was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code. Following the proceedings, his father was seen leaving the court without posting bail, abandoning his eldest son. According to the charge, the teenager is accused of raping his 15-year-old acquaintance at a house in the district between 4pm and 5.30pm on June 2. A conviction under this section carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison and can also include caning. Based on the police report filed by the accused's father, the teen, who works at a restaurant, allegedly committed the act when his mother was out working. However, on the day of the incident, his 41-year-old mother returned home earlier than expected and noticed a pair of female slippers outside their house. She knocked on the door several times before her son opened it. Upon checking his bedroom, she found a girl inside. Initial police investigations revealed that both the accused and the victim admitted to having a sexual relationship on numerous occasions, estimated between 16 to 18 times. Deputy public prosecutor Firdaus Ruslan handled the prosecution, while the accused was represented by lawyer Tan Song Yang from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK). The court then set July 16 for the mention of facts and sentencing, pending a welfare report on the accused from the Social Welfare Department (JKM).
