Michael Vaughan Questions ICC For Punishing England: 'Over Rates Of Both Teams Were Poor'
After the deduction, England have slipped from second to the third spot in the latest ICC World Test Championship table.
England have been docked two ICC World Test Championship points for maintaining poor over rate during the Lord's Test. However, former England captain Michael Vaughan has claims that India too were guilty but escaped punishment.
'Let's be honest both teams over rates at Lords were very very poor .. How only 1 team has been reprimanded is beyond me," Vaughan posted on X (formerly Twitter).

After beating India in the third Test at Lord's, England took their tally to 24 points from three matches to occupy the second spot in the WTC table. However, following ICC's action, they have now 22 points out of possible 36 which has also reduced their point percentage from 66.67% to 61.11%.
As a result, England have slipped from the second to the third spot with Sri Lanka now second behind Australia.
The hosts have been punished under Article 16.11.2 of WTC playing conditions as per which 'a side is penalised one point for each over short, and after time allowances were taken into consideration."
Besides losing two points, England have also been fined 10 percent of their match fee.
'This was as per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time," read a statement from ICC.
Latest WTC Standings
Australia, the last WTC's runners-up, are currently at the top of the table having won all their three matches of the latest cycle so far with 100 PCT. They are followed by Sri Lanka at the second spot. India, with one win from three Tests, are currently fourth with 33.33 PCT followed by Bangladesh (16.67 PCT) at the fifth spot.
West Indies are sixth having lost all of their three Tests so far while New Zealand, Pakistan and defending champions South Africa are yet to start their respective campaigns.

Coincidentally, the same countries played in the men's European Championship final last year. Spain won that match 2-1. Here's the latest: England has defended its European title by defeating Spain in a penalty shootout. The game was tied at 1-1 after extra time. England won the shootout 3-1 with Chloe Kelly scoring the winning penalty kick. It's 1-1 at full time and the players are coming off the pitch for a quick break. Then it's extra time: two times 15 minutes to break the deadlock. England equalized when Alessia Russo made it 1-1 in the 57th minute. Chloe Kelly whipped one of her trademark crosses into the box from the left and Russo rose above the defense to make it 1-1. Spain heads into the break in the lead after Mariona Caldentey's goal in the 25th. Both teams traded early blows but Spain looked stronger after the goal. La Roja kept most of the possession and did not allow England to threaten much. England also trailed at halftime in the quarterfinal against Sweden and semifinal against Italy, but still won both games. Mariona Caldentey has made it 1-0 for Spain in the 25th minute. Ona Batlle whipped in a cross from the right, after good work by Aitana Bonmati, and Caldentey headed it powerfully home. Swiss former player Lara Dickenmann carried the trophy out onto the field after the closing ceremony of Euro 2025. A large circular banner was unfurled in the center of the field in tribute to the host nation, while smaller banners were displayed nearby with 'Thank You' in Switzerland's four official languages —Italian, French, German, and Romansh. Two large Alpine-inspired shapes were then carried onto the field, with the England flag on one and Spain's on the other. IND vs ENG 4th Test - Gambhir: India not a team in transition; no amount of praise enough for Pant
Rishabh Pant's foot injury during the fourth Test raised questions about whether teams should be allowed to have substitutes who can bat or bowl in case someone is unable to continue owing to some serious injury. India's head coach Gautam Gambhir isn't averse to the idea. 'I'm all for it. If the umpires and the match referee see and feel that there is a major injury, it's very important to have this rule where you can get a substitute,' Gambhir said after India managed a draw against England at Old Trafford on Sunday. Despite fracturing his foot and being advised six weeks' rest, Pant walked out to bat during India's first innings and went on to score a half-century. Gambhir, while lauding Pant's efforts, made it clear that a replacement rule is the need of the hour. 'If it (the injury) is very visible, there is nothing wrong in doing that (allowing a replacement). Especially when it's been such a closely fought series in the previous three Test matches. Imagine if you had to play with 10 men against 11. How unfortunate would that be for us!' Gambhir added. And I hope he recovers, comes back quickly and tries to deliver a game for us,' the head coach said. Before the series got underway, it was decided that the pacer will just play three Tests in the series, and he has already completed his quota. 'Not a team in transition' Gambhir hailed the fight Indian batters showed to save the Manchester Test, keeping the series alive going into the final fixture at The Oval in a few days. 'They are making their own history… A lot of people wrote us off in this Test match, but this is the foundation of this team. These are characters who are sitting in this dressing room, wanting to fight for the country, and they will continue to do that,' Gambhir said. When the Indian team travelled to England under a new captain in Gill, there were doubts about how it would adjust to the conditions. But the team proved its mettle, time and again. 'I don't believe that the team is in transition, because it's still an Indian team. And this is the best 18 that is going to represent, and more importantly, it's not a transition, it's just a little bit of inexperience,' Gambhir said. 'It's only about experience and inexperience, and that is how we see this. But the most important thing is that these guys are going to learn a lot from what they did today, because being under pressure and then batting for five sessions is never easy, especially on a Day five wicket ,' Gambhir said, adding: 'We got to give it to the guys for the kind of character they have shown.'

And, after a memorable comeback in the Manchester Test, they are moving in that direction. A 188-run stand between captain Shubman Gill and K L Rahul kept India in the fourth Test against England before Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja earned a spirited draw for the visitors with an unbeaten 203-run alliance. Asked whether Gambhir gave a pep talk to the players after day four and made a reference to his match-saving 137 in Napier back in 2009, Gambhir responded in the negative. 'Look, the first thing is that I don't remember any of my knocks, that has become history. I think they should make their own history. Honestly, no one in this team will follow anyone or want to follow. They should make their own history. 'They want to fight for the common man back home. And the important thing is that the way a lot of people had written us off in this Test match, this is the foundation of this team. 'These are characters who are sitting in this dressing room, wanting to fight for the country and they will continue to do that," said the head coach. Managing a draw from the brink of defeat would give India a psychological edge over the hosts in the fifth and final Test in London, felt Gambhir. 'It will. Because when you see, when you're put under the pressure, when you're put under the pump and you end up adding five sessions, I think that's a great character. And anything that you do in these conditions, when you're put under pressure and you come out of those pressure moments, it is always a great feeling. 'And it just ends up giving a lot of confidence in the dressing room as well. And I'm sure, I think going into Oval, I think we will be high on confidence, but we can't take anything for granted," he said. Under new captain Gill, the team is going through a transition but Gambhir doesn't see it that way. Considering the inexperience in the side, the squad has done well especially Gill who racked up his fourth hundred of the series on Sunday. 'Good you used that word transition but I don't see it like that because it is still an Indian team. This is the best 18 that is going to represent. It is only experience and inexperience. 'And that is how we see this. But the most important thing is that these guys got to learn a lot from what they did today. 'Because being under pressure, batting five sessions is never easy on day five of the Test against an attack like England. And then coming out with a draw and only losing four wickets…," he said.
