NEW YORK, NY – (June 25, 2025) – CNN Podcasts announced today the return of Chance Encounters , hosted by CNN Travel Writer Francesca Street and based on Street's popular digital column of the same name. The second season of the series will premiere Friday, June 27 and will continue to highlight the extraordinary true stories Street has captured of friendships and relationships formed on the road.
By utilizing the original interview session recordings, the first season of Chance Encounters brought Street's reporting to life and invited audiences to experience the raw emotion and wonder in her subjects' voices for themselves. The upcoming set of episodes is built around the theme of 'Summer Love,' and will continue to envelope listeners in more of these feel-good tales of travel fate: from a librarian and a yacht captain unexpectedly crossing paths in Mazatlán, Mexico in the summer of 1968, to a decades-long missed connection that began as a teenage crush on a 1993 European holiday.
'Our show is the perfect listen for the summer vacation season,' said Street. 'Whether on the beach or in the skies, I hope these episodes will be a fitting soundtrack for all of your adventures this year.'
Chance Encounters will debut new episodes on Fridays and will be available to listen wherever you get your podcasts. The first episode of the new season follows Catherine Tondelli, a Californian woman who met her Italian husband, Fausto, in front of the Trevi Fountain in Rome, Italy, right after she threw three coins into the fountain's waters and made a wish.

Zohran Mamdani was a disruptor in the New York City mayoral primary. His mother did something similar in Hollywood
If Zohran Mamdani looks comfortable on camera, there's a reason for that. The 33-year-old democratic socialist stunned the political world after he was backed by voters in the Democratic mayoral primary Tuesday. The formal outcome won't be known until at least July 1, when New York City releases the initial ranked-choice results. But Mamdani held a clear lead Tuesday night, and his top challenger Andrew Cuomo told supporters he had called Mamdani to concede. If he wins in November, Mamdani would make history as the first Muslim to serve as mayor of New York City. Mamdani is no stranger to the limelight. In addition to having moonlighted as a rapper, Mamdani is the son of director Mira Nair, known for films like 'The Namesake,' 'Queen of Katwe' and 'Monsoon Wedding,' a movie that won the coveted Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival. 'Salaam Bombay!' was her first hit. The 1988 drama, which depicted the daily lives of children living in slums in India's most populous city, was nominated for an Academy Award and a BAFTA. Nair followed that up with 1991's 'Mississippi Masala,' a groundbreaking film that centered on an interracial romance between leads Denzel Washington and Sarita Choudhury, a storyline not often seen at the time in the industry. In 2022, Nair talked to Slate about the challenges of getting the movie made, recounting one particular meeting with a studio head at the time. 'I had already got Denzel to say yes. He loved 'Salaam Bombay!' and that was the reason (the studio head) wanted to meet me,' she recalled. 'I pitched the story, and the head of the studio says to me, 'Can you make room for a white protagonist?' That was his exact line.' The Indian-American director said there was the 'novelty of seeing Black and brown skin in the one frame, that was a big thing.' 'Frankly, I have not seen it in 30 years since, as much as it should be celebrated,' Nair said. Mamdani can thank the movie, in part, for his existence. Nair met writer and political scientist Mahmood Mamdani while in Uganda conducting research for the film. The couple married, had their son and eventually settled in New York City. His mother has shown herself publicly to be equal parts proud and supportive. 'Eid Mubarak to all who love humanity. Two days prior, she encouraged people to come to a screening and Q&A of 'Monsoon Wedding' 'but only after you have voted for Zohran Mamdani for Mayor,' she wrote. 'Dance with me in the aisles to herald this historic mayoral campaign that has brought such dignity and joy to New Yorkers,' she wrote. 'Aaj mera jee karda! Today my heart desires!' ‘Ironheart' Has a Phase One MCU Link We Didn't See Coming
If we said Ironheart, the new Marvel Studios show about a genius who builds a special suit allowing her to fly around, linked to the original 2008 film Iron Man, you'd say 'No duh.' The entire idea and premise of the show are intrinsically linked to that character and film. But if we told you the connection went beyond that, and linked to a supporting character in that film played by an Oscar winner, you'd probably be like 'Tell me more.' So we will. Ironheart debuted its first three episodes on Disney+ this week, and we think it's awesome. It's a really fun, slick show about a flawed lead character trying to find herself in this wild Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, before we just go ahead and spoil this fun reveal, we'd urge you to give the show a shot. You'll be happy you you know, just keep reading here. That's fine too. In the first few episodes of Ironheart, Riri Williams is in need of some specific pieces of tech. She finds them thanks to a black market buyer who calls himself Joe McGillicuddy, played by none other than young Han Solo himself, Alden Ehrenreich. Joe is lying about a lot of things, clearly, but soon we realize it's way beyond just lying. It turns out, Joe's real name is Ezekiel Stane and he's the son of Obadiah Stane, former head of Stark Industries who became the Iron Monger and died at the end of the original Iron Man. He was played by Jeff Bridges. What we learn in Ironheart is that Tony Stark covered up Stane's villainous turn, letting him have a heroic legacy. However, Ezekiel knows the truth and is constantly haunted by it. He's worried he'll be corrupted by power like his father and, well, only three episodes of Ironheart are out so we'll stop there. Some fans are sure to be annoyed at this seemingly out of the blue connection back to Iron Man but we think it fits into the DNA of this show. Riri is always thinking about Stark, his legacy, accomplishments, and more. And, with Joe/Ezekiel, she finds someone who shares a lot of those concerns. What's next for the son of Jeff Bridges? Will there (inevitably) be more wild MCU connections? We'll find out next week when the final three episodes of Ironheart come to Disney+. Want more io9 news? Mika Rottenberg debuts in Spain with surreal take on production systems

Hers is a direct critique of the banalities of global capitalism and its entanglement with labor and production, told through a body of work that is at once familiar yet strange, moving between the real and the fictional to fascinating and powerful effect. In her first Spanish solo outing, at Hauser & Wirth Menorca, the Argentinian-born New Yorker pairs the much celebrated video installations 'Cosmic Generator' (2017) and 'Spaghetti Blockchain' (2019) with the latest 'Lampshares' series (2024/25), accompanied by drawings that stitch together the many loose ends of her thinking. The gallery's setting, marooned on the tiny island of Illa del Rei reached by boat from the Mahón harbor, feels cut off from reality, and is an ideal stage for her looped, surreal narratives. These are fantastical pieces, oddly human-like lamps that glow, literally, with toxic beauty. They are also a direct hit at the lack of environmental effort, in this case from the powers that be in New York public housing. Rottenberg collaborated with New York's Inner City Green Team and craftsman Gary Dusek to use bittersweet vines—an invasive species choking her upstate farm and the surrounding forests—and fuse them with melted, reclaimed-plastic 'urban gemstones,' as she coins them. Having realized that the local public-housing complex lacked a recycling system, Rottenberg's team worked with residents to sort their garbage, mining everyday waste (laundry-detergent bottles, milk jugs, water containers) for color. 'My daughter and her friends helped with the plastic recycling for the prototypes, at the beginning, but soon I realized we needed a lot of garbage.' She jokingly refers to the lamps as 'eco rococo' for their elaborate, curvaceous and strangely sexual, anthropomorphic designs. Mika Rottenberg 'Lampshare' (bx 1.4) 2025. 'Lampshares' is accompanied by a series of drawings of loop fingerprints, disembodied limbs and sensuous tendrils, all of which are long-standing motifs in her work that nod to female labor and non-normative bodies. They look whimsical at first glance but up close these images, 'made with a lot of mess and with fingerprints,' as she explains, expose the imperfections in our world that fuel Rottenberg's wider critique. 'For me it's not only about the environment, but the people, the labor. The thing that really excites me is the idea of green employment in New York City. The title refers to the action. When you buy one, you're buying a share of this project. And it all gets fed back into buying more plastic.' The process, she admits, is 'laborious, because they are modular parts,' but once those parts exist 'then it can be super creative, almost like a painting.' Saying that, Rottenberg is under no illusion that her project will fix New York's recycling dilemma—the studio-collective has processed three tons in almost two years— yet the gesture points toward an economy where trash gains renewed value instead of ending up in landfill. In 'Cosmic Generator' we see tunnels from a Chinese plastic-goods market to the Mexico–California border, then ruptures into candy-colored back-lots where goods and people disappear through hidden portals. Filmed on location, her documentary style slips into magical realism, reminding us that global supply chains remain largely out of sight. Elsewhere in 'Spaghetti Blockchain' ASMR bubble-popping meets Siberian throat singing, CERN's antimatter lab, a potato harvester grinding across a field. The title references blockchain technology, a system where data is continuously transferred and validated across a network of computers, free from central ownership, regulations or control. In a similar vein, Rottenberg layers image and sound into a constantly shifting stream of associations—a mesh of disparate sources that loop without resolution, as she probes the mechanics of production, commerce and power. She explains, 'I am interested in these human-made systems where the starting point is to have no clue what is really going on and to try to impose a certain logic on things, and the madness of that.' On an island already removed from the mainland, her biomorphic, viscerally alive objects and disjointed films sharpen our sense that the world we inhabit—the one we consume daily—may be governed by rules we're only partially allowed to see.
