Malaysian singer Dino, 50, suffers stroke after eating 7 durians in one day
Malaysian singer Dino believes his stroke was a result of poor diet and lifestyle habits. Photo: China Press Malaysian singer Mohd Shah Rosli, better known by his stage name Dino, is currently recovering from a stroke that affected the right side of his body. In a recent interview with local media, the 50-year-old said the incident might have been triggered by his poor diet and lifestyle habits. Dino, a member of the 1990s hip-hop group Nico G, recalled eating seven durians in a single day – just one day before the stroke occurred. 'I love durian and would always have it whenever it's in season. I'm not ruling out the possibility that my diet may have played a role in the stroke. I also eat plenty of sweet foods. 'A day before the incident, I ate seven durians and suffered a stroke the next morning. When I was speaking to the doctor, my mouth still smelled of durian,' he said. Dino added that his long-term smoking habit also played a role in the health scare, and he's now making an effort to quit smoking for good. In addition to his music career, Dino also works as a salesperson at a shopping mall. He's currently on medical leave to focus on recovery. While his employer offered RM500 to help with expenses, the singer admitted the amount was far from sufficient. 'After a month, I have no income. That's why I'm asking for help. I've been relying on my savings,' he said. As part of his recovery, Dino must attend follow-up consultations at Hospital Kuala Lumpur every two weeks. He's also exploring alternative treatments, such as massage therapies that cost around RM200 per session. Despite the ordeal, Dino remains optimistic and thankful that his condition is improving. 'When the stroke first hit, I could barely move or speak clearly. However, I've been giving it my all in recovery, and finally, my condition has improved,' he shared. Determined to avoid a similar incident, Dino is now more mindful of his health and committed to following his doctor's advice. 'I'll be more cautious about my diet and continue taking the medications given by the doctor. I have to consume anticoagulants to prevent cholesterol buildup,' he said.

Government mulls raising tobacco tax: Anwar
Published on: Thursday, August 07, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 07, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. PUTRAJAYA: The government is considering a proposal to raise the tobacco tax rate, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on Thursday. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the proposal aligns with the government's commitment to public health and fiscal reform, particularly given the long-standing moratorium on tobacco tax hikes. Advertisement Malaysia's tobacco tax currently accounts for 58.60 per cent of retail prices. The country has no formal mechanism for periodic adjustments or revaluation of the rate, which was last increased in September 2014. 'I support the spirit (of staying healthy), not just because I don't smoke, but also due to the reach of anti-smoking campaigns,' he said in response to questions on whether the government may revise the tax in Budget 2026, to be tabled in October. Anwar was speaking after attending a Budget 2026 engagement session here today. An economist reportedly suggested raising the rate to between 60 and 75 per cent Advertisement Last week, when announcing the 13th Malaysia Plan, Anwar said the government would broaden its 'pro-health' tax beyond sugary products to also cover tobacco, vapes and alcohol. He said the expanded tax framework aims not only to increase revenue, but more critically, to encourage behavioural change and curb the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). NCDs, commonly associated with unhealthy lifestyles, include heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer. Anwar said healthcare remains a key government priority, noting that the public system is under growing strain from medical inflation, the dual burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases, and an ageing population. According to the parliamentary calendar, Budget 2026 is scheduled to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat on Oct 10. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? First dental specialist centre in Negeri Sembilan opens for public
SEREMBAN: Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan confirmed the completion of Malaysia's first dental specialist centre here. The RM32 million facility, built by the Public Works Department, occupies a 0.809-hectare site adjacent to Seremban Health Clinic. Construction began on March 30, 2021, and concluded on April 15 this year. Specialist services launching next month include orthodontics, periodontics, restorative surgery, and public dental health diagnostics. Ahmad Maslan announced this during the project handover to the Health Ministry, attended by Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun. The ministry's Occupational Health Branch will oversee 167 health facility projects nationwide worth RM18.05 billion. Sixty projects valued at RM5.54 billion are in planning, 63 worth RM7.37 billion under construction, and 44 post-construction projects costing RM5.14 billion. Health Ministry Senior Undersecretary Datin Paduka Roslinah Md Jani highlighted the centre's role as the first non-hospital dental specialist hub. It will serve as a one-stop referral facility for Negeri Sembilan, Putrajaya, and Melaka under the Central Zone initiative. Roslinah noted the centre's skills lab is a pioneering feature absent in other dental facilities nationwide. Patients can expect reduced waiting times from two months to just two or three weeks for specialist appointments. The centre will streamline referrals from private clinics and public dental health facilities in the region. - Bernama
