At HM's behest, Sayyid Shihab receives Tunisian and Lebanese Ambassadors
HH Sayyid Shihab expressed his appreciation to the ambassadors for their efforts in strengthening bilateral relations between Oman and their respective countries. He wished them success in their future endeavors and for their countries' peoples further progress and prosperity.
For their part, the ambassadors expressed their profound thanks to His Majesty the Sultan, for the support extended to them during their tenure in Oman, which enabled them to carry out their duties. They wished His Majesty continued good health and a long life, and for Oman continued progress and prosperity under His Majesty's wise leadership.

Workshop discusses ways to reduce natural disasters
Salalah: A two-day workshop titled 'Risk and Disaster Reduction' kicked off at Sultan Qaboos Youth Compound for Culture and Entertainment in Salalah on Wednesday. The workshop is organised by the Environment Authority in cooperation with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)'s Regional Office for Arab States. The opening ceremony was held under the auspices of Dr. Abdullah Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, and attended by a number of experts and specialists from the Sultanate of Oman and abroad. The workshop aims to enable national cadres to understand the global framework on diminishing the scope of natural disaster risks, as well as standard mechanisms for monitoring and reporting the progress made in implementing the objectives of the global framework. It includes presentations, interactive discussions and practical training on using the global system of reporting, besides highlighting the role of institutional governance in this field. Speaking at the workshop, Mamdouh Salim Al Marhoon, Director of the Environmental Emergency Center, said, 'The Sultanate of Oman is aware of the escalating challenges associated with climate change and its geographical nature. This requires the development of an integrated national system to mitigate risks, based on knowledge, proactive planning and integration among different stakeholders.' Al Marhoon affirmed Oman's commitment to implement the requirements of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030. He said that this commitment is realised by adopting decisions based on accurate data, in addition to building sustainable capacities that enhance preparedness and diminish the impact of disasters on people and the environment. For her part, Noura Al Ashqar, Head of the UNDRR's Regional Office for Arab States, said, 'The Sultanate of Oman is making tangible progress toward enhancing resilience by integrating the concept of risk reduction into national policies and plans, in addition to the use of data and information in a manner that supports decision-making amid rising environmental challenges facing the region.' The opening session of the workshop included a visual presentation on the Sendai Framework, in addition to an outline of the agenda of the workshop that was presented by Mirna Abu Ata, Programme Management Officer at the UNDRR. The workshop also discusses the definition of the Sendai Framework, its goals, indicators, terminology and the extent to which the Sendai Framework is related to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It also deals with the global reporting system, data classification mechanisms and periodic reporting. Being the leading global reference in this field, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 seeks to limit human, material and service losses, enhance the understanding and management of risks and encourage capacity building, disaster preparedness and response to disasters when they occur. The Sendai Framework comprises seven global goals and 38 indicators to measure progress. Member states are committed to submit periodic reports via an approved electronic platform.

India, Russia reaffirm defence ties and privileged strategic partnership
Moscow: Deputy Defence Minister Colonel General Aleksandr Fomin held a meeting with Vinay Kumar, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of India to the Russian Federation, according to the Russian Defence Ministry. The Russian Defence Ministry said the sides discussed topical issues of bilateral cooperation in the defence sphere and confirmed the focus on further strengthening the specialised cooperation in the form of a particularly privileged strategic partnership. It added that the meeting took place in a warm and friendly atmosphere which is traditional for the Russian-Indian relations. Building on this spirit, Russia on Tuesday emphasised that sovereign nations have the right to choose their trade partners and determine the terms of economic cooperation based on their interests, TASS reported. Commenting on the US' threats regarding India, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists, "We believe that sovereign countries must have and do have the right to choose their trade partners, the partners in trade and economic cooperation, on their own and independently determine those modes of trade and economic cooperation that suit the interests of a country in question." US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he would increase the tariff charged on imports from India from the current rate of 25% "very substantially" over the next 24 hours due to New Delhi's continued purchases of Russian oil, Reuters reported. Soon after, India said that "the targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable". A statement by the Ministry of External Affairs said the government will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security. The spokesperson said India began importing from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict and that the very nations criticising India are themselves engaged in trade with Russia. "Where the United States is concerned, it continues to import from Russia uranium hexafluoride for its nuclear industry, palladium for its EV industry, fertilisers, as well as chemicals. In this background, the targeting of India is unjustified and unreasonable. Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security," the statement said. India has, earlier too, defended its sovereign right to conduct energy policy based on national interest, stating that energy purchases are guided by market dynamics and prevailing global conditions.

Indian EAM Jaishankar meets German MP, discusses growing bilateral ties
New Delhi: Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday met German Member of Parliament Jurgen Hardt in New Delhi and discussed growing bilateral ties and recent global developments. In a post on X, Jaishankar wrote, "Always nice to catch up with German MP @juergenhardt. Discussed our bilateral cooperation and global developments." According to MEA, Germany is one of India's most valued partners in Europe. The two countries share a strong strategic partnership, which has grown steadily over the decades since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1951. In March 2021, both sides marked 70 years of diplomatic ties. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz have held regular meetings, both bilaterally and on the sidelines of key global summits. In fact, they have met six times in the last two years. Their latest meeting took place during the G7 Summit in Apulia, Italy in June 2024, where they reviewed ongoing cooperation. Prior to that, the two leaders met at the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023 and also during the G7 Summit in Hiroshima in May 2023. Chancellor Scholz had also paid a standalone State visit to India in February 2023, a first by a German Chancellor since the launch of the Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC) format. India and Germany held their 6th IGC in Berlin in May 2022, co-chaired by PM Modi and Chancellor Scholz. Several agreements were signed in the fields of clean energy, health, agroecology, skill development, mobility, and more. A major outcome was the Joint Declaration of Intent on the Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP), as per MEA. Separately, EAM Jaishankar also met Slovenia's Ambassador to India, Mateja Vodeb Ghosh, for a farewell call. In a message on X, he said, "Pleased to receive Ambassador Mateja Vodeb Ghosh of Slovenia this evening for a farewell call. Appreciate her contributions towards building stronger ties. Wish her the best for future endeavors."
