Cubs' Kyle Tucker Has 5-Word Response to Benching After Replacement Shines

Kyle Tucker started off the season looking like an MVP candidate for the Chicago Cubs. However, he has not been himself as of late.
Tucker is slashing .189/.325/.235 since the start of July with just one home run. This month, he is just 8-for-54. After Monday's loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, manager Craig Counsell announced that Tucker would spend some time on the bench.
Tucker sat out both games of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Brewers. The Cubs won both games, and Owen Caissie, who was playing in place of Tucker, looked great.

Matt Dirksen/Counsell was not clear on how long Tucker would be out of the lineup. Tucker himself was not too sure.
"We'll see how it goes," Tucker told The Athletic's Patrick Mooney.
The Cubs may be able to afford keeping him on the bench if Caissie continues to produce. In the doubleheader, he went 3-for-6 with four RBI. He also scored two runs and picked up six total bases. Caissie also hit his first big league home run and collected his first RBIs.
Caissie is the Cubs' top prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, and showcased exactly why the team believes in him. His breakout not only gives Tucker more time to reset, but it also gives the Cubs an option if they cannot retain Tucker in free agency.
Tucker was expected to be the prize of free agency, but his recent play may change that. Regardless, many teams will be interested in him and may be willing to overlook his recent woes. He is still a four-time All-Star, Gold Glove Award winner and Silver Slugger.

Newport Harbor girls' volleyball takes first in Tesoro Tournament
Newport Harbor's maiden voyage under new girls' volleyball coach Pat Eaton began with smooth sailing, as the Sailors opened the season by winning the Tesoro Tournament. Junior outside hitter Ella Olson earned tournament MVP honors over the weekend. She has committed to Texas for both beach and indoor volleyball. Newport Harbor defeated San Clemente 25-20, 25-17 in the final. 'It was good to watch us respond to some adversity,' Eaton said. 'I don't think we were playing our best volleyball, but we played tough, probably started picking up our defense and our blocking got better. 'Ella Olson was huge for us the whole weekend. She got a well-deserved MVP for that, and I think more than anything, the way she played in that match was the only reason why we kind of made it into the semi[final]. She was just huge for us because we weren't passing great, and so she kind of had to carry our offense and was fantastic in that.' Eaton took the head coaching job at Newport Harbor after leading the boys' volleyball program and assisting with the girls' team at Tesoro. The Sailors notched straight-set victories over Sunset League foe Edison in the semifinals and against Laguna Beach and Trabuco Hills in pool play. Junior opposite Vladimira Kotzakov earned all-tournament team honors, while sophomore outside hitter Piper Coady supplemented the Sailors' attack from the left side. Back Bay rival Corona del Mar also got off to a good start, placing third at the Pride of the Windward Side Tournament, which was put on by Honolulu Le Jardin Academy. Senior outside hitter Casi Doll, committed to UC Riverside, was named the MVP of the tournament, and senior libero Riley Card was also selected to the all-tournament team. Max Gamboa, the new head coach at CdM, said the Sea Kings could not compete in the finals because they were scheduled for Sunday. Former Clemson football quarterback commit reportedly set to make MLB debut
The newest member of the Pittsburgh Pirates' big league roster isn't just the top pitching prospect in Major League Baseball. He's also a former Clemson football recruit. According to multiple reports Wednesday, the Pirates are calling up right-hander Bubba Chandler, a former quarterback who originally committed to play for Clemson coach Dabo Swinney in May 2020 but was drafted by Pittsburgh in the third round of MLB's 2021 draft. Chandler was a two-sport athlete at North Oconee High School in Georgia. He has since gone on to become the top pitching prospect in all of baseball, according to midseason prospect rankings from MLB Pipeline. In 24 starts at Class AAA Indianapolis this season, Chandler has posted a 4.05 ERA in 100 innings. He has 121 strikeouts to 53 walks for a 1.48 WHIP. According to a profile on Chandler from Alex Stumpf Wednesday, the Pirates' hurler was prepared to head to Clemson for his freshman season as a two-sport athlete in football and baseball in 2021 after he didn't hear his name called in the first round of that year's draft. Chandler mentioned his relationship with Swinney and talked about being offered a chance to return to Clemson in 2023 after some early season struggles in Class A ball. Per Stumpf's story at MLB Pipeline: "Clemson coach Dabo Swinney told Chandler there was still a spot waiting for him, and those with NIL money had continued to try to be the siren call to bring him back to the gridiron. "Hell yeah I was considering it," Chandler said. "I had a couple conversations with myself about going back. ... This is not what I expected pro ball to be, and this is not very fun, and I knew I was going to have fun if I was playing quarterback for a top five university." Chandler will instead make his big league debut out of the bullpen, the AP reports, when the Pirates host the Colorado Rockies for a three-game series at PNC Park beginning Friday. Across four seasons of minor league ball, Chandler has compiled a 26-18 record and 3.73 ERA in 89 starts. He has struck out 457 batters over 372 innings.
