Non-working streetlights could hover around 50,000-60,000 in the city

Streetlight maintenance, which has been a sticking point for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for quite some time, could take longer for streamlining.
The agreement with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a public sector agency, for streetlight maintenance ended on April 30, but no new agency has been chosen yet. The GHMC's standing committee was presented with two choices—either continue with EESL or invite tenders. The committee unanimously opted for the latter. Officials informed that the process of choosing a new agency could take at least two months, during which the existing 17 vendors of the EESL will be continued.
'The tenders involve a huge expenditure, and GHMC does not have the authority to take a decision about it. We need to forward it to the government. It could take some time,' said an official.
An ongoing survey to take stock of the streetlight infrastructure before issuing tenders found that around 10% of the lights are non-functional, quating to a staggering 50,000-60,000 malfunctioning streetlights. For some lights, lamps need to be replaced, while for some others, MCBs or timers are non functional. Mopping up enough number of bulbs and other spare parts in the intervening period is proving to be a difficult task. As of June 4, a total 4,63,427 street lamps have been enumerated in the city as part of the survey.
The Streetlight Project with the aim of replacing all conventional lamps with LEDs began in 2018. While 98% glow rate was the condition on which payments were made to the EESL, the general glow rate had been much less than optimum. Mostly it hovered at about 70-80 per cent. The total number of LED streetlights installed in the city is 5,50,088.
Officials say that several agencies, particularly the LED manufacturers are evincing interest in bidding. The conditions to be incorporated in the service level agreement are 98% or above glow rate, penalties against day glowing, non rectification beyond the agreed period, non maintenance of buffer stock, non functioning of the dash board, and non functioning of CCMS (Centralized Control Monitoring System).

Excise gets 1,6000 applications for 28 bars

Hyderabad: The excise department's call for applications for 28 (2b) bars in the GHMC area and its nearby areas has attracted an overwhelming response, with over 1,600 applications submitted just one day before the June 6 deadline. It is anticipated that this number could reach 2,000. The department has opened the tender process for licences in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), as well as for individual licences in the municipalities of Mahbubnagar, Nizamabad and Jalpally. This includes bars that lost their licences for failing to pay fees or submit the necessary documents within 90 days of receiving their initial licence. There are around 2,500 bars across the state. According to sources, many people not involved in the bar or wine shop business have applied in large numbers for the licence, for which the fee is set at Rs 1 lakh. "Many believe they can sell their licence for double the price to people in the business and make a quick profit," said sources, adding that: "This trend has been seen with wine shops and is now happening with bars as well." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo In the GHMC area alone, over 500 applications have been submitted. "While this surge is positive, it is challenging to penalise a shop for not maintaining the required distance from hospitals and educational institutions. Current licence holders are struggling to remain in the same location," the sources said. Meanwhile, the excise department has reported a notable 7% increase in revenue for the 2024–25 financial year. The Telangana govt is banking on a new excise policy and a revision of land values to boost revenue. The 2025-26 budget projects tax revenue of Rs 1.45 lakh crore, encompassing income from liquor, GST and other sales taxes, as well as land parcel sales. Sources mentioned that a new excise policy is expected to be introduced this year and that the govt is anticipating significant income from application fees for liquor outlets. RBI cuts repo rate by 50 bps to 5.50 pc

Mumbai, June 6 (UNI) The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday in its second bi-monthly monetary policy of FY26. cut the repo rate by 50 basis points (bps) to 5.50 pc from 6.00 pc earlier. This is the central bank's third consecutive repo rate cut. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra-led Monetary Policy led committee decided to cut the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) by 100 basis points (bps) to 3% from 4% earlier releasing Rs 2.5 lakh crore of lendable resources to the banking system. The MPC also decided to change the policy stance to 'Neutral' from 'Accommodative' in a bid to support economic growth. This RBI's rate cut decision is expected to stimulate borrowing and investment, leading to a higher growth rate. The policy panel retained growth estimate at 6.5 per cent but projected a lower inflation of 3.7 per cent in the current fiscal. Malhotra asserted that the global backdrop remains fragile, and trade projections have been revised downwards, but the Indian economy is progressing well despite the global uncertainties. "India's strength comes from the strong balance sheets of the five major sectors. The Indian economy offers immense opportunities to local and foreign investors. We are already growing at a fast rate. We aspire to grow faster," he said. Inflation has softened significantly, the RBI Governor said, and the near-term and medium-term outlook exudes confidence. Food inflation outlook remains soft, and core inflation is expected to remain benign. The RBI also projected that retail inflation for the current financial year would be 3.7% against its April projection of 4%. Government data shows it fell to 3.16% in April from 3.34% in March, remaining within the RBI's comfort level. The various economic indicators remain strong, with the RBI Governor pointing to a gradual rise in discretionary spending and healthy private consumption. Industrial activity is gaining gradually while the services sector is likely to maintain momentum, he said. Rural demand remains steady while urban demand is improving, he added. The RBI kept the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth projection unchanged at 6.5% in the current financial year. The quarterly projections are: 2.9% (April-June), 3.4% (July-September), 3.9% (October-December), and 4.4% (January-March). The Central bank also reduced the cash reserve ratio (CRR) by 100 bps and said it will release Rs 2.5 lakh crore of bank funds. CRR refers to the percentage of total deposits that banks must hold in liquid form with the RBI. India continues to be an attractive investment destination, assured Mr Malhotra, adding that the forex reserves stand at $691 billion, which is sufficient to fund more than 11 months of goods imports.
