Iraq's Security Chief defends Iran border memorandum

Shafaq Newsa day ago
Shafaq News – Baghdad
Iraq's National Security Adviser Qassim al-Araji met US Chargé d'Affaires Steven Fagin on Saturday to discuss the recent border security memorandum between Baghdad and Tehran.
According to a statement from the adviser's office, al-Araji outlined the document, which provides for tighter border control, anti-smuggling measures, and action against infiltration, confirming that "Iraq's policies are guided by national interests and sovereignty, while pursuing balanced relations with both regional and international partners."
Fagin, in turn, reaffirmed US support for Iraq's balanced diplomacy, praised ongoing efforts to return displaced families, and noted plans for an international conference in New York to press countries to repatriate nationals from Syria's al-Hol camp.
The memorandum, signed last week in Baghdad under Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani's sponsorship, was presented by Iraqi officials as a memorandum of understanding rather than a binding treaty. Washington rejected the deal, calling it 'inconsistent with US objectives' and harmful to Iraq's existing security institutions. Iraq countered that it is a sovereign step to strengthen stability and border security.

By John Lee. Iraq's Rafidain Bank has signed a professional partnership agreement with U.S.-based consultancy K2 Integrity (K2i), during a ceremony hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Washington. The agreement is grounded in Iraqi Cabinet Resolution No. (23274) of 2023. The deal forms part of the Iraqi government's broader strategy to build a robust and transparent financial system capable of aligning with global economic shifts and positioning Iraq as a promising financial hub in the region. The Embassy highlighted that this partnership reflects the continued development of Iraq-U.S. relations, particularly in economic diplomacy and strategic cooperation supporting sustainable growth. Protests for Gaza hostages escalate in Israel

Shafaq News – Middle East Hundreds of thousands of Israeli protesters marched toward the headquarters of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud Party, pressing the government to act on the release of hostages held in Gaza. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum estimated that more than one million people took part in rallies nationwide, with Tel Aviv emerging as the main center of protest. Leading the marches, families of hostages urged authorities to make the captives' release a top priority. Across major cities, demonstrators blocked roads and gathered outside government buildings and military sites. Local media reported that police responded with water cannons and detained more than 30 protesters after fires were set near the Likud offices. Officers also dispersed groups attempting to block the Ayalon Highway. The protests came after the Israeli Security Cabinet approved a plan to establish military control over Gaza. Officials described the move as ''necessary to dismantle Hamas,'' while critics cautioned it could complicate hostage negotiations and heighten domestic tensions. About 251 people were taken hostage during the Hamas-led assault on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. Since then, 148 have been released, while around 50 remain in captivity in Gaza. Israeli officials estimate that at least half of those still held are no longer alive.

CF dismisses reports of leader's election disqualification

Shafaq News – Baghdad On Sunday, Iraq's Coordination Framework (CF), a political alliance of predominantly Shiite parties, dismissed reports that its Secretary-General, Abbas Al-Amiri, had been excluded from upcoming parliamentary elections. In a statement, the Framework clarified that Al-Amiri is not a candidate and that his name appearing on the exclusion lists released by the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) reflected a coincidental match. Earlier on today, IHEC barred 253 candidates from contesting the November 11 parliamentary elections, citing violations of Electoral Law. An official document showed the disqualified candidates failed to meet requirements under Article 7/3 of the 2018 Parliamentary Elections Law, which mandates nominees demonstrate 'good conduct' and bars those with convictions for felonies, corruption offenses, or crimes involving moral turpitude, even if later pardoned. IHEC is continuing its preparations for the vote, with 31 political alliances, 38 parties, and 79 independents registered, and about 29 million Iraqis eligible to cast ballots.
