Research and development plays key role in cocoa competitiveness

Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysian government, through the Malaysian Cocoa Board (MCB), plays a key role in driving cocoa research and development (R&D) to boost the industry's competitiveness. Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said the MCB's R&D centre specialises in cocoa cultivation, post-harvest processing, breeding and mass management, and quality control as well as product development. 'Our efforts in the upstream sector continue to bear fruit with cocoa beans production increasing by 65 per cent from 269 tonnes to 445 tonnes last year,' he said in his keynote speech at the launch of the Malaysian International Cocoa Fair (MICF) 2025 here on Monday. Also present were Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister, Datuk Chan Foong Hin, MCB chairman Datuk Matbali Musah and MCB director-general Datuk Dr Ramle Kasin. Johari said Malaysia must revive local cocoa production to gradually reduce the imbalance between the robust downstream sector and the upstream market. He said the focus is on premium cocoa varieties such as fine flavour beans, single-origin beans and organic beans to meet global quality demands.
Advertisement 'To embrace a sustainable and responsible cocoa supply chain, we will continue to work on the National Cocoa Traceability System which is currently in progress. Once complete, I encourage those who import cocoa beans to bring this system to their source countries and work with farmers there to embrace sustainability at the plantation level,' he said. Meanwhile, Johari said Malaysia is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030, reducing methane emissions by 30 per cent, and maintaining forest cover at no less than 50 per cent. He said this is why the implementation policies prohibit deforestation and focus on good agricultural practices with quality planting materials. 'We're embarking on sustainable plantation practices that will yield higher returns and premium prices for farmers in the future while protecting our environment and forests,' Johari added. MICF 2025 is organised by the MCB from May 24-27, featuring exhibitions, conferences, cultural dinners, business matching and business talks. AirAsia to develop talents with Sabah institutions

The initiative aims to develop local talent, particularly among B40 youths, as part of the airline's commitment to Sabah's workforce growth. 'While tourism remains Sabah's economic driver, we want to contribute further by nurturing skilled professionals in aviation,' Tony said on Tuesday. Programme details and expansion plans include initial focus on pilot training with applications expected to open by year-end, while future expansion involves aircraft engineering, artificial intelligence (AI) and other technical fields, aligning with AirAsia's tech investments. Additionally, preparations include syllabus, establishment of committee and funding pending for rollout. Investors seek relief on Bursa Malaysia after six losing sessions
KUALA LUMPUR: There was a welcome bounce on Bursa Malaysia as trading commenced on Wednesday, giving investors some respite amid the persistent market weakness. At the opening bell, the FBM KLCI rose 3.85 points to 1,507.1, alleviating the risk of the index falling through the 1,500 psychological support. Having endured six straight sessions of losses, the market's benchmark index is ripe for bargain-hunting. However, the market undertone remains weak with net selling by foreign funds sapping momentum from the market. According to TA Securities Research, investors are wary of committing to the Malaysian stock market as it is beset by a weaker earnings outlook and uncertainties over global tariffs. The research firm noted weaker first-quarter earnings from local corporate and weaker China manufacturing numbers as the culprits behind the dampened investor sentiment, which took the market briefly below 1,500 points in the previous session. "Immediate index support stays at 1,490, while stronger supports can be found at 1,465 and 1,444. Immediate resistance is kept at 1,564 with next upside hurdles seen at the recent high of 1,586, followed by 1,610 ahead," it said in its technical outlook. Blue chips leading the rebound on Wednesday included Nestle up 30 sen to RM78.90, Kuala Lumpur Kepong adding 10 sen to RM19.74 and Hong Leong Financial Group gaining eight sen to RM16.38. Active stocks were KNM down 0.5 sen to three sen, Avangaad unchanged at 28 sen and Sunview flat at 38 sen.

New MMC developments to be announced at Hawana
KUALA LUMPUR: The latest on the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) will be announced during the summit of the coming National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil ( pic ). The Communications Minister said the MMC was set up with the clear mission of defending media freedom, ensuring fair and responsible reporting, and serving as a channel for the people to air grievances against the media in a civil manner. He said the other notable achievement was when the Dewan Rakyat passed the Malaysian Media Council Bill 2024 in February. 'After more than 50 years of discussion, our country has finally succeeded in establishing the Malaysian Media Council, a self-regulatory body that brings together all types of media, including print, broadcast and digital,' he said at the Hawana 2025-Bernama Strategic Partners' Appreciation Ceremony and Official Launch of Bernama-Motorhome at Wisma Bernama here yesterday. Fahmi said with the setting up of the MMC and other initiatives, the government was laying a strong foundation for the future of the Malaysian media. Themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics', Hawana 2025 will be held at WTC KL from June 13 to 15 with the highlight of the celebration to be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on June 14. More than 1,000 media practitioners, representatives of local journalist associations and media representatives from Asean member countries have been invited to bring together the professional media fraternity and industry experts while exchanging ideas and forging strategic relationships. Fahmi said the Bernama (Amendment) Act 2024 was gazetted on May 14 covering entities disseminating news via newspapers, publications, radio, TV and other mass communication platforms, including electronic and digital media. 'This amendment also aims to ensure Bernama's structure and functions are in line with developments in information and communications technology, as well as meeting the needs of the increasingly complex media industry,' he said. Meanwhile, May 29 has been gazetted as National Journalists' Day in conjunction with the publication of the first edition of Utusan Melayu newspaper that day back in 1939. At the event, Fahmi also launched the Bernama Motorhome-Mobile Studio, making it the first local media agency to utilise a recreational vehicle with mobile broadcast studio facilities that can be deployed to quickly disseminate news.
