Morocco Manager Reacts to AFCON Final Defeat

Morocco World19-05-2025

Morocco U20 head coach Mohamed Ouahbi says his side must take pride in their performance despite a 1-0 defeat to South Africa in the final of the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Cairo.
The Atlas Cubs were aiming for their second continental title at this level, but their dream fell short after Gomolemo Kekana scored the only goal of the match in the 70th minute at Cairo International Stadium after a defensive howler.
Morocco enjoyed spells of dominance and created a number of chances, particularly in the second half, but were ultimately unable to find the back of the net.

Speaking after the AFCON final, Ouahbi described the loss as 'a scar' but stressed the importance of focusing on the positives.
'We're not returning to Morocco with the title, but we are returning with a strong group and promising young players,' he said. 'I'm a positive person. I look ahead, not behind.'
He praised the players' commitment and urged fans to support the squad despite the disappointment.
'The Moroccan people should be proud of these players. They represented the country well, showed character and played with heart. It's normal to feel regret, and the players were emotional, but they gave everything.'
Ouahbi refused to blame individuals for the result, instead pointing to a need for continued development and preparation ahead of the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile next September.
'We conceded from a mistake, which can happen in football. The players made a big effort. Now, we must recover and move forward.'
'Our ambition is to do better at the World Cup. We will work hard, remain united, and aim to represent Morocco in the best possible way.'
Morocco, alongside South Africa, Egypt, and Nigeria, have qualified for the U20 World Cup, which will be held from September 27 to October 19 in Chile.
The Atlas Cubs' only previous U20 AFCON title came in 1997. Tags: afconEgyptMorocconigeriaSouth Africa

Hakimi, LeBlanc Pendant Speaks to Moroccan Hearts and Heritage

Doha – Moroccan football star Achraf Hakimi and renowned jewelry designer Mimia LeBlanc have joined forces to create a distinctive pendant honoring their shared Moroccan heritage. The collaboration and product were officially revealed on May 21. The jewelry piece features a traditional Moroccan door design with the map of Morocco carefully carved inside. This distinctive creation represents more than mere adornment—it stands as a tribute to Moroccan culture, craftsmanship, and natural beauty. 'Conceived with pride, crafted with love, and inspired by Morocco's eternal soul,' LeBlanc described the piece on her Instagram account. The announcement included a promotional video showcasing Morocco's cities, traditions, craftsmanship, and natural landscapes, with Hakimi proudly wearing the necklace throughout. The collaboration represents a powerful fusion of athletic excellence and artistic craftsmanship. It brings together the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) player and the respected jewelry creator in a project deeply rooted in their cultural identity. Hakimi's involvement extended far beyond lending his name to the project. The international right-back participated actively throughout the creative process, from initial sketches to selecting materials. Every element was carefully considered through ongoing dialogue between the athlete and the designer. LeBlanc, known for her meticulous attention to detail, transformed their shared vision into a tangible ornament that balances traditional Moroccan motifs with contemporary design elements. Her craftsmanship brings together the heritage of the past with modern sensibilities. The pendant represents a meaningful symbol of cultural identity rather than a mere fashion accessory. It speaks to Moroccans both at home and abroad, connecting generations through beauty and memory. This collaboration shows a trend where partnerships transcend commercial interests to create something profoundly personal. The Hakimi-LeBlanc jewelry piece demonstrates how luxury and authenticity can coexist, with Morocco serving as a source of creative inspiration. The campaign has electrified audiences worldwide, transforming a simple adornment into a celebration of Moroccan identity and cultural pride. Just days after this jewelry launch, Hakimi cemented his legendary status by helping PSG secure their first-ever Champions League title with a commanding 5-0 victory over Inter Milan on May 31, further elevating his profile as both an athletic and cultural icon. Real Madrid Target Ajax Wonderkid Abdellah Ouazane as Contract Expires

Doha – Real Madrid have set their sights on 16-year-old Ajax talent Abdellah Ouazane, who is set to become a free agent when his contract expires on June 30. The Spanish giants have been monitoring the Moroccan youngster for some time and have already initiated contact with the player's representatives. Born in Amsterdam but representing Morocco at youth level, Ouazane was named the best player at the African U-17 Cup. His performances in the tournament attracted attention from several major European clubs, with Real Madrid now pushing to secure his signature. The creative midfielder has impressed during his first year at the youth level with Ajax and has already made his debut with the Dutch club's first youth team. Despite previously playing for the Netherlands U-15 side, Ouazane appears to have chosen to represent Morocco internationally. According to reports confirmed by Marca, the youngster could join either Real Madrid's youth team or potentially their Castilla reserve side. Madrid's interest in Ouazane dates back to early last season, but club officials wanted to see how he performed in a major tournament before making their move. Ouazane is known for his versatility, capable of playing both as an attacking midfielder and in central midfield. He possesses a powerful shot and is skilled at taking free kicks. The Amsterdam native made his debut for Morocco's U-17 team in October 2024 and has already scored four goals in 13 appearances. While Madrid's senior team prepares for the upcoming Club World Cup starting June 14, with their first match against Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal scheduled for June 18, the club's directors are working to finalize the acquisition of one of the most promising young talents they have scouted in recent months.
