Lee Fortis speaks out after spat with India head coach Gautam Gambhir

India head coach Gautam Gambhir was involved in an extraordinary bust-up with Surrey groundsman Lee Fortis ahead of the start of the Oval Test between England and India. Relations between the sides have become increasingly strained over the course of an absorbing series which the hosts lead 2-1 heading into the final match of the best of five contest. England's nerve-shredding win at Lord's was almost overshadowed by a time-wasting row, while the Old Trafford Test, which finished in a draw last Sunday, culminated in a handshake row involving Ben Stokes and Ravindra Jadeja. With just three days between games there has barely been a chance for cooler heads to prevail, and another highly charged game was already expected before an extraordinary incident on Tuesday morning. During a net session, Gambhir was heard telling Fortis 'You can't tell us what to do!' while wagging his finger aggressively in the direction of Surrey's perplexed head of ground staff. The pair were separated by India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, after which Fortis threatened to launch a complaint against Gambhir. Gambhir reportedly shouted back, 'You can go and report to whoever you want, but you can't tell us what to do.' Fortis was later quizzed by a number of journalists from India who were desperate to learn what Gambhir had taken such offence to, amid the suggestion he was unhappy with the facilities that had been provided. This is the same curator Lee Fortis who also created drama during the Indian women's team match. His behavior towards visiting teams has always been I am sure some people in India will find Gautam Gambhir wrong for standing against such nonsense 🙂 — Team Gautam Gambhir (@gautamgambhir97) July 29, 2025 'There's quite a big game coming up,' a puzzled Fortis said when asked why he thought Gambhir was so insensed. 'It's not my job to be happy,' he added when asked if he had a problem with Gambhir's attitude. 'I've never met him before, he must've played here. 'You saw what he was like this morning. I don't know, you'll have to ask him. There's no side to the story. 'I'm OK, we've nothing to hide here. It does look a bit like (you're ganging up on me). If you turn the cameras round and show what this is. I don't want to be rude.' England, meanwhile, will be putting fast bowler Jofra Archer at risk of a fresh injury if they select him, according to former test players Stuart Broad and Nasser Hussain. Archer is taking part in his first test series in four years after overcoming elbow and back injuries. The 30-year-old sat out the first two matches before claiming five wickets in his return to the format at Lord's and four in the drawn Manchester test. While India could draw the series with a win at the Oval, Broad told Sky Sports that England should prioritize Archer's long-term fitness. 'We can't not have Archer for four years, bring him back and then bowl him into the ground and not see him for another four years,' he said. '(Josh) Tongue started the series, and I know he mainly got lower-order players out, but you probably have a natural replacement for Archer.' England have added fast bowling all-rounder Jamie Overton to their tiring pace battery. More Trending Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse have played all four tests, while skipper Ben Stokes said he would 'run through a brick wall' to try to be available for the final test beginning on Thursday. Gus Atkinson and Tongue are likely to feature in the decisive final test, and England are likely to rest Archer with the Ashes series against Australia in four months' time. 'I don't think you can have Archer playing three on the bounce coming back after four years,' former England captain Hussain told Sky Sports. 'Gus Atkinson coming back after a long time, and then Stokes with a niggle as three of your four seamers – but I would definitely play Atkinson on his home ground if fit.' Story not done yet, says emotional Leah Williamson as England celebrate Euro win

An emotional Leah Williamson insisted 'this story is not done yet' as England's celebrations following their Euro 2025 triumph continued in central London on Tuesday. There was an open-top bus parade just after midday, as thousands of fans flocked to see the procession along the Mall, before a staged ceremony at the Queen Victoria Memorial in front of Buckingham Palace. The moment was not lost on Williamson as she held back tears among the revelry, less than 48 hours after the Lionesses retained their European Championship crown by beating Spain in the Basel final on penalties. The England captain said: 'I'm holding back tears. I've been crying all the way down the Mall. This is unbelievable and it's one of the best things we've ever been a part of so thanks for coming out. 'Everything we do, we do it for us and our team but we do it for the country and young girls. This job never existed 30 or 40 years ago and we're making history every single step. Stay with us, this story is not done yet.'

Fara Williams hopeful Sarina Wiegman will sign new contract as England manager

England have won 35 of their 48 matches under Wiegman, with Sunday's Euro 2025 final victory over Spain in Basel sealing a triumphant defence of the title won in 2022 and serving as revenge for defeat in the World Cup showpiece in Australia two years ago. The 55-year-old, who took up the Lionesses' reins in September 2021, is under contract with the Football Association until summer 2027, and Williams would love to see her stay at the helm even past that point. 'I don't think any of us want to lose Sarina,' Williams, England's most capped player, told the PA news agency. 'Even when we've maybe doubted the Lionesses, I guess this tournament… we spoke a lot about her substitutions and timing of them, but whenever you seem to doubt Sarina, she pulls through. 'The incredible woman she is, the incredible manager she is and coach that she is and how she can galvanise a group of players and get them to win games even when things aren't looking pretty on the pitch.' Wiegman has now won the last three European Championships, having guided the Netherlands to 2017 glory. The Dutch team went on to reach the World Cup final two years later, meaning Wiegman has now reached five straight finals in major tournaments. A message to the fans, from the boss 🫶 — Lionesses (@Lionesses) July 28, 2025 'To go to five back-to-back tournament finals is an unbelievable achievement,' Williams said. 'I would love for them to give her a contract even further than than 2027, but at some point she might need a break. 'But, let her have that break after hopefully bringing a World Cup back for us.' Nineteen-year-old striker Michelle Agyemang enjoyed a breakthrough tournament as she came off the bench to twice rescue England. She scored the equaliser as the Lionesses came from two goals down to get past Sweden in the quarter-finals before grabbing an even later leveller to take the semi-final against Italy into extra-time. Her performances saw her named young player of the tournament and Williams believes it is important Agyemang gets the right support after a life-changing few weeks. She added: 'Her life changed overnight and over a month. She's become a national hero in terms of what she's done. 'I thinks it's important she's well-protected. She sounds like she's got good people around her, a good family that will help her through these kind of transitions.' The Euro 2025 winners landed back in England on Monday afternoon and were immediately whisked off to a reception at 10 Downing Street. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 BACK-TO-BACK 🏆#WEURO2025 — UEFA Women's EURO 2025 (@WEURO2025) July 27, 2025 The celebrations continue on Tuesday with an open-top bus parade through central London. And Williams is confident England can continue to go from strength to strength, helped by funding from the National Lottery for the women's game. She added: 'The National Lottery has invested a further £15million into women's and girls' football that really helps move the game on, so I think they're in a really good position in terms of funding and driving and growing the game.'
