Rare footage of lost anglerfish awes internet, raising questions about ocean conservation
The latest animal to go viral isn't a baby hippo or newborn tapir or anything that cute really: it's a humpback anglerfish (Melanocetus johnsonii) that was spotted in shallow waters off the coast of Spain. If you know anything about this kind of fish besides the fact that it has a lantern on its head, it's that it doesn't belong in brightly-lit waters — like blind cave salamanders and earthworms, it is a creature of the deep and dark.
But seeing it floundering in a glittering blue void quickly infatuated the internet. Because anglerfish need to stay in deep waters to survive (nearly 5,000 feet or 1,500 meters), it is rare for them to reach the surface unless they are sick. Indeed the anglerfish, famous for its razor sharp teeth and bioluminescent lure used to snag prey, died only a few hours after the scientists spotted it. But it was the only documented time humans have seen this fish in this part of the sea. Captured by the underwater photographer David Jara Boguñá, the fish has since found its way all over Reddit, Bluesky and YouTube, with coverage ranging from CBS News, CNN and Oceanographic Magazine.
Now the scientists — who were researching pelagic sharks at the country's Canary Islands — are going to study the anglerfish's body, hoping to learn more about its uncharacteristic behavior. Regardless of what they find, experts agree that the anglerfish's plight is a sign that people should be mindful of the health of our planet's oceans, which are heating at an unprecedented rate in human history. That begs the question: is the reason this anglerfish was a stranger in a strange land because of climate change?
'The deep open ocean is a sensitive environment and changing temperatures would essentially shift the balance of the ecosystem that anglerfishes have adapted to exploit,' Chase Brownstein, a research associate at Yale University's Ecology and Evolutionary Biology program, told Salon. 'Basically, warming oceans are bad for animals for a variety of reasons, mainly because they are used to a certain temperature range and pushing the limits of that range can put species under metabolic or physiological stress.'
Even though the anglerfish's surfacing can raise awareness about ocean pollution, this does not mean we know for sure it did not rise for natural reasons. Ben Frable, the University of California San Diego's Senior Collection Manager of Marine Vertebrates, said that anglerfish surfacing events are not as uncommon as one might think.
'Just off the bat, it is not unheard of to see mesopelagic (200-1,000 m depth) in shallow waters, especially around offshore islands like the Canaries and Hawaii,' Frable said. 'Many mesopelagic organisms vertically migrate into shallower water at night to feed in the more productive shallow waters. As far as we know, anglerfish generally do not vertically migrate as adults but this fish could have come shallow for a myriad of reasons.'
With that caveat aside, Frable observed a crucial difference between this particular anglerfish and others that surface — it looks sick.
'As many folks have commented, this fish doesn't seem to be in the best shape, so it could be disoriented from entering shallow, well-lit waters or sick or dying,' Frable said. 'Another type of anglerfish, the footballfishes, are known from individuals entering shallow water and being found barely alive or dead washed up on beaches.'
Rafael Banon Diaz, an ichthyologist at the Universidade De Santiago De Compostela, also told Salon that the individual fish in question is 'already dead' and that although not all surfaced anglerfish are sick, 'these anomalous records are normally sick specimens.'On a deeper level, Frable is concerned about how factors like pollution and climate change are making the ocean less hospitable to aquatic life. Anglerfish are among the victims, though it's not clear if that's 100 percent the case with the viral fish. That's why research into the deepest, darkest depths of our planet is so important.
'The deep ocean is impacted by climate change similar to the shallow ocean — decreasing oxygen, increasing acidity and temperature will all have profound impacts,' Frable said. 'However, we are still learning about the implications of this. It impacts circulation and currents, which in turn changes the distribution of food and habitable space for these fish and other organisms.'
If these trends continue, humans may someday enter a world where anglerfish do not exist at all. If that happens, scientists like Frable believe it would be a terrible loss.
'Anglerfishes are some of the most iconic deep-sea fish and have certainly captivated me (like many others) from an early age,' Frable said. 'I have been fortunate enough to work with them in my role as Collection Manager of the Marine Vertebrate Collection here at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (UC San Diego) as this is one of the largest deep-sea fish collections.'
Brownstein thinks that, at the very least, the recent video will revive public interest in this unusual creature.
'It is very cool to see a new video of this species, though it is clear this anglerfish was on its way out,' Brownstein said. 'Pelagic deep sea anglerfishes, including the Melanocetus shown in the video, are really quite an amazing group of organisms notable for their morphological diversity and their odd mode of reproduction, wherein males temporarily attach to females or fuse such that both individuals share a bloodstream!'

Screen time is both a cause and symptom of kids' bad behavior, according to new research

Does your child not listen to you? Do they kick and scream when they get angry? You may need to rethink their screen time, according to an article published Monday in Psychological Bulletin, a journal of the American Psychological Association. The more time kids spent looking at a screen, the more likely their actions and feelings didn't meet expectations for their stage of development, according to a meta-analysis of 117 studies of kids younger than 10½ when the research began. These socioemotional problems included anxiety, depression, hyperactivity and aggression. The association was small but significant, especially for girls. The studies were designed in different ways but the overall picture showed that trouble occurred when kids under age 2 had any screen time (other than video chats), when kids ages 2-5 had more than an hour per day of screen time and when older kids had more than 2 hours per day of screen time. Kids who spent a lot of time on games were particularly at risk. And 6-to-10-year-olds were more likely to develop socioemotional problems than children age 5 or younger. What's more, kids who experienced these challenges tended to turn to screens even more to cope, which could exacerbate the problem. This was especially the case for boys. 'High screen use isn't just a cause of problems — sometimes, it's a symptom,' said lead author Roberta Pires Vasconcellos via email , noting one of the most striking findings. 'In many cases, children who are already struggling emotionally turn to screens, especially video games, as a way to cope or escape,' said Vasconcellos , who is a n associate lecturer at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. 'While that might offer short-term relief, over time it can trap them in a cycle that reinforces those emotional difficulties.' One of the largest of its kind, the meta-analysis has limitations, however, because it couldn't account for factors such as parenting style or socioeconomic status, Vasconcellos said. And since the studies looked at screen time more broadly, they couldn't pinpoint the effects of social media use on kids' mental health. Nevertheless, this latest data on kids and screen time suggests specific actions parents or guardians can take to have a real, positive impact on their kids' mental health. Adults often give kids screens to help them calm down, especially during work time or in other situations when children need to be quiet, such as at a restaurant. 'While this may offer short-term relief, it can lead to longer-term problems,' Vasconcellos warned. That's because it may prevent kids from learning how to behave appropriately and handle their emotions. 'Instead of developing self-regulation skills, they come to rely on screens for comfort and distraction,' she said. 'This can reinforce a harmful cycle where emotional difficulties are masked rather than addressed, making it even harder for children to cope without a screen over time.' Look for signs that children are reaching for screens when they have a problem. Rather than assuming the problem is the screen itself, look at the bigger picture, Vasconcellos said. ' If you notice your child turning to screens more often when they're upset or withdrawn, it might be time to check in on how they're doing emotionally,' she advised. 'In some cases, they might be seeking the sense of connection or support they're not finding in their face-to-face relationships — at home, at school or in other social settings.' That's when they need parental support and guidance the most — 'to help them feel heard, understood and emotionally safe, both online and offline,' Vasconcellos said. School guidance counselors or therapists are also good sources of support. The amount of time kids spend gaming is also important to note, according to the study. ' Online games, in particular, pose additional risks because they often function like social media platforms,' Vasconcellos said. 'Since these games continue even when a player logs out, children may feel pressure to stay connected for longer periods, which can lead them to neglect important real-life activities like sleep, schoolwork and face-to-face interactions. 'For this reason, gaming may require extra attention and clearer boundaries — especially for older children, who are typically granted more independence in how they use their time.' It's important to set rules for kids' screen time and stick to them. 'Keeping rules consistent helps children know what to expect and makes limits easier to follow,' Vasconcellos said. Parental controls on phones and apps are also useful. 'Most devices offer built-in tools to help you manage screen time and filter content,' she said. 'Use these settings to set reasonable daily limits and ensure your child is only accessing age-appropriate material.' To help prevent kids from depending too much on devices, Vasconcellos suggests removing apps such as video streaming platforms that are particularly tempting. Instead, give kids content that is educational or that serves a good purpose. The results of this study didn't surprise me. In my research, therapists and teachers often complain that parents or guardians aren't willing to set limits and say no when their kids ask for screens. When I say no to my own kids, their reactions aren't always pleasant. I have to remind myself that, as their mom, it's my job to know what's best for them and to make decisions that will keep them healthy in the long run — even if it leads to short-term distress for us all. Limiting kids' phone use is also wise. A newly published consensus statement I coauthored with experts around the globe offers evidence that heavy use of social media and smartphones by young people is linked to problems with sleep, attention, addiction and body dissatisfaction. When I speak to parents about how to handle their kids' social media use, they often tell me they feel they need to give their younger kids a phone at the same age their older siblings got one. That's not true. Tell younger kids who make this argument that you are more experienced now and have more data showing how screen time can be harmful. Also consider attractive alternatives to a phone. One mom told me she offered her daughter $1,600 to wait until she was 16 to get a phone. Her daughter took the cash. While many people don't have that kind of disposable income, you can still be creative and propose other things that kids would like. Sleepovers with friends, or a family camping adventure are just some examples. No matter what you offer, it's important to rethink the way you let your kids use technology. Since screen time may be both a cause and a symptom of behavioral and emotional problems in children, get comfortable saying no. Reasoning the density of a minced human to be 985 kilograms per cubic meter (62 pounds per cubic foot) is a fair estimate, given past efforts have judged our jiggling sack of grade-A giblets to average out in the ballpark of 1 gram per cubic centimeter, or roughly the same as water. And in mid-2021, the global population was just around 7.9 billion, give or take. The fact this roughly 500-million-metric-ton meatball would not only sit neatly inside the city of New York but could fit within the confines of Central Park with room for a queue of tourists might come as a shock to anybody who has been forced to jostle for elbow room in Times Square at midnight on New Years Eve. Fresno State professor has 2M Instagram followers. His content? 1,700 science toys
Every room in Ray Hall's home features some kind of science toy. Some of the Fresno State physics professor's vast array of toys are simple, like tippy tops that, when spun, suddenly flip to spin on their narrow stems. Others are more complex, like Tesla coils that generate lightning-like electrical currents. Hall's vast array of toys aren't only used in the classroom — they're the star attraction of one of Instagram's most popular science accounts. In his account @physicsfun, Hall shares demonstrations of these toys and explains the physics behind them to an audience of over 2 million followers. 'My goal is to get these toys into the hands of people because it's one thing to watch me manipulate them. But if they're excited enough to buy it and show it to their kids, show it to their friends. That's when the joy of physics starts to spread,' Hall said. Hall has over 1,700 physics toys. Some are less than $10 and others are worth several hundred dollars. Each of Hall's Instagram videos includes a caption linking to sources for further information. The videos follow a consistent formula: they're short and simple, with the toy clearly taking center stage. They demonstrate concepts like chaos theory, gyroscopic stability and magnetic levitation. 'Almost all of my Instagram videos, especially the ones I'm most proud of, make people go, 'What? That's how it works?'' Hall said. 'They get people more invested in science.' Hall also has a YouTube channel with 610,000 followers that he monetizes as well as a Facebook page with 731,000 followers. 'Everything I try to show on Instagram has that little element of surprise like you weren't expecting for that to necessarily happen,' Hall said. 'I also try to make my videos so that they're not overproduced. It's always my hands and I don't really talk to the camera. Hall first decided to share his toys on Instagram in 2015 after his stepdaughter posted a video of one of his tippy tops and it received a lot of likes from her high school friends. But his Instagram account only started growing significantly after his videos went viral on Reddit from 2016 to 2017. His following grew from 6,000 followers to 20,000 in three days. He reached 1 million followers by 2017. 'The biggest key to success on Instagram is continuity and that means having a daily post,' he said. 'YouTube is a different beast. I have someone who mashes up my videos and posts them for me because I just don't have the time.' Hall added that what motivates him to keep making videos is to keep trying to get more people curious about the world around them. 'It's more so a cheerleading to get them to think more deeply and go pursue further content,' he said. Hall's interest in physics dates back to his childhood. He grew up watching science documentaries and visiting museums like the Exploratorium in San Francisco. He recalls spending time with his father who worked for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and loved being in his tool shed. 'My dad was a jack of all trades, his garage was full of tools and he was always fixing stuff. I would hang around with him and he would explain to me how things worked,' Hall said. 'And physics I think is kind of the ultimate 'how do things work', so it appealed to me.' A first-generation college student, Hall studied physics at Fresno State, earning his bachelor's degree in 1988 and his doctorate from UC Riverside in 1994. His research focused on high energy particle physics. It was around that time that he came across some physics toys at a shop in Occidental and started collecting them. 'Back when I was a grad student, I did have some teaching responsibilities,' Hall said. 'So it hit me when I was at that shop that sold kites and other toys that I could really teach physics with them.' After grad school, Hall got a job at Fresno State and has been a physics professor at the university since 1999. He teaches physics along with critical thinking classes for students who aren't planning to pursue careers as scientists. 'My passion now is trying to convince people that science is a lot more interesting than pseudo science. There's a lot of awful belief in things, like that the Earth is flat, and people that take it seriously. That concerns me,' he said. 'It seems like there's a fundamental misunderstanding on what science is trying to do.' As for the future of his social media content, Hall said he may explore new formats — possibly videos where he speaks directly to the camera. He also plans to keep searching for new physics toys. 'I'm taking everything one day at a time and I'm not looking to stop,' he said.
