UAE launches new roadmap for ‘Green Intellectual Property' to drive innovation
The Ministry of Economy launched a new roadmap for "Green Intellectual Property (IP)" designed to foster innovation, accelerate technology localisation, and develop new projects in the new economy, environmental sustainability, and circular economy.
The three-month roadmap will strengthen the competitiveness of the UAE's IP landscape and contribute to its progress and prosperity, supporting the country's directives to transition to a circular economy.
In this regard, Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of the UAE Circular Economy Council, said, "Thanks to the forward-looking vision of its wise leadership, the UAE has succeeded in adopting qualitative initiatives and projects for the intellectual property sector, positioning it as one of the key pillars for building a strong and sustainable national economy.
Al Marri added that the roadmap is a new step to raise awareness on the importance of adopting green technology and innovation to provide superior services and products that serve the community, as well as enhancing the UAE's attractiveness to green and sustainable innovations.
These efforts help consolidate the country's position among the most innovative countries globally, in line with the 'We the UAE 2031' vision.
He added, "The new roadmap for Green IP is particularly important as it coincides with the launch of this year's Innovation Month. We will collaborate with local environmental stakeholders in the country and the World Intellectual Property Organisation to implement all the objectives of this roadmap, providing more enablers and opportunities to motivate inventors and creators to develop sustainable innovations and projects in critical economic areas and sectors."
The Ministry of Economy organised a media briefing at its Dubai headquarters to shed light on the objectives of the new roadmap for Green IP and its vital role in supporting national efforts to promote innovations in the UAE's sustainable economy sectors.
Abdulla Ahmed Al Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy, highlighted that sustainability and environmental conservation have always remained an integral aspect of the UAE's cultural fabric throughout its history. The nation's progress has been built upon the principles and foundations of sustainability, which have also reinforced its regional and global leadership in embracing eco-friendly initiatives and solutions.
He stated that the Ministry of Economy remains committed to supporting national projects aimed at promoting sustainability across various economic sectors, in line with the UAE's vision to build a sustainable and well-balanced economy that protects natural resources for future generations.
In his speech at the session, he said, "The new roadmap for Green IP aims to promote the adoption of leading digital solutions and advanced technology by individuals, organisations, and companies to produce sustainable products and services that contribute to environmental conservation. Following this roadmap, we are keen to forge new partnerships with the academia and research centres to integrate IP into sustainable innovations and protect the rights of eco-friendly projects and innovations."
The Undersecretary continued, "This roadmap plays a vital role in fostering innovation and creativity in sustainable sectors, bolstering the UAE's competitiveness and elevating its standing in key global indicators, particularly in the Global Innovation Index (GII), where the UAE consistently maintains its regional and international prominence year after year."
Furthermore, he highlighted the new roadmap's key objectives that the Ministry seeks to accomplish, including the introduction of a programme that will accelerate the registration of patents related to sustainable technologies and eco-friendly innovations. The aim is to raise the percentage of patent registrations for sustainable and environmental innovations to eight per cent of the total number of patent registrations in the country.
Furthermore, it will strengthen the legal frameworks for protecting patents related to environmental sustainability, particularly given the continued growth in the number of patent applications submitted in the country, which reached approximately 3,622 in 2024.
Al Saleh emphasised the UAE's accomplishments in establishing a robust and competitive legislative framework to foster the growth of this crucial sector. This framework encompasses the issuance of laws on the Protection of Industrial Property Rights, Trademarks, and Copyrights and Neighbouring Rights.
The UAE is currently among the top countries globally in terms of IP and innovation, ranking first in the region in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2024.

The top three winners included HeroGo, for its project 'Empowering the GCC to access better quality and more affordable groceries while eliminating food waste'; Thiqa Education's '1 Dirham makes an impact' initiative; and Distant Imagery Solutions' 'Rooted in Innovation UAE Engineered Drones Transform Mangrove Restoration' initiative. Together, they were awarded a total cash prize of AED 600,000 in recognition of their exceptional contributions to sustainable development in the UAE. Oman deploys AI to drive Vision 2040 goals
MUSCAT: The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MoTCIT), in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy, has launched a portfolio of artificial intelligence (AI) pilot projects across strategic sectors, as part of the 'AI Economics' initiative under Oman's National Programme for Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Digital Technologies. According to the MTCIT's 2024 annual report, the initiative seeks to embed AI tools within priority sectors including healthcare, energy, investment, public administration, and tourism. The overarching aim is to accelerate economic diversification, build national digital capabilities, and align with the long-term objectives of Oman Vision 2040. The newly introduced projects are designed to improve decision-making, service delivery, and operational efficiency across both public and private sectors. Each initiative reflects the government's strategic intent to position Oman as a regional leader in the digital economy. One of the flagship initiatives is the National Center for Virtual Health, which leverages AI to provide remote specialised healthcare services. The project aims to expand access to medical care, particularly in remote areas, while reducing the overall burden on physical health infrastructure. In the field of energy and natural resources, the Geological Data Analysis project applies AI to enhance the accuracy of identifying oil, gas, and mineral deposits, as well as locating potential sites for renewable energy development. The government has also launched an Environmental Information Bank, which combines AI and blockchain technologies to create a secure and intelligent system for managing environmental data. This platform is expected to support more informed policymaking in areas such as climate change, conservation, and pollution control. In the media sector, the Ain Media Platform has been introduced to improve the quality and personalisation of media services offered to users. The platform uses AI algorithms to streamline content delivery and tailor experiences based on user preferences. Another key initiative is the Investment Data Dashboard, an interactive tool powered by AI that enables real-time analysis of investment flows and economic indicators. This dashboard is designed to support evidence-based policymaking and attract foreign direct investment by improving data transparency. To support tourism and transport, the Smart Gates in Dhofar project has been rolled out to monitor vehicle movements, congestion levels, and tourist volumes, particularly during high season. The initiative is expected to enhance traffic management and facilitate more efficient planning for tourism services in the southern governorate. Within the realm of public sector reform, the Smart Administration programme focuses on automating administrative procedures to improve efficiency and responsiveness in government services. The project aligns with national efforts to digitise service delivery and reduce bureaucratic delays. The Training Workshop Management system is another AI-enabled platform designed to optimise content organisation and evaluate the effectiveness of capacity-building programmes. It will provide real-time feedback and analytics to improve training outcomes across government institutions. To stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship, the government has introduced a Support Programme for Promising Omani Companies. Implemented in coordination with the Promising Omani Startups Programme, the initiative offers targeted financial and technical assistance to startups developing AI-based solutions. Together, these projects reflect a coordinated national approach to harnessing the economic potential of AI and advanced digital technologies. By fostering innovation, enhancing institutional efficiency, and enabling smarter public services, the AI Economics initiative is poised to support Oman's transition toward a knowledge-based economy. As implementation progresses, the integration of AI into economic planning and service delivery is expected to open new pathways for growth, investment, and competitiveness. These developments reinforce the Sultanate's ambition to lead digital transformation efforts across the region.
