Westports expects a record year for containers
This comes after the group handled 5.57 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the first half of this year (1H25), up 3.1% from 5.40 million TEUs in the same period last year.
Last year, the main operator of Port Klang recorded its highest-ever annual volume at 10.98 million TEUs.
CIMB Research has upgraded its call on Westports from a 'hold' to 'buy' and raised its target price to RM6.20 a share from RM5.10 previously, citing renewed investor interest on the back of some easing in geopolitical risks, port-tariff catalysts and improved operating leverage.
Effective July 15, Port Klang tariffs rose by 15% as part of a staggered 30% hike through to January 2027.
The terminal handling charge per TEU will increase to RM345 (from RM300), followed by RM375 effective Jan 1, 2026, and RM390 on Jan 1, 2027.
CIMB Research said earnings visibility for Westports is strong in 2H25, supported by tariff implementations and stable transshipment flows.
'The completion of maintenance dredging by this month will also restore wharf capacity,' it added.
The research house maintained its container throughput growth forecast for this year at 2.5%, backed by new services from shipping alliances and a normalisation of volume after the exit of ZIM Integrated Shipping Services Ltd, one of the leading carriers in the global container shipping industry, last year.
However, the research house said gateway volume could soften due to weaker imports of metal and e-waste.
'Additionally, Westports flagged that uncertainty surrounding tariff implementation could pose further downside risk to gateway demand,' the research house said.
CGS International Research (CGSI Research) lifted its container volume growth forecast for this year to 1%, citing stronger-than-expected transshipment.
The research house also raised its value-added services (VAS) revenue projections, as e-waste containers remained longer at the yard, boosting storage income.
'We believe that yard occupancy will decline half-on-half in 2H25, but we expect the drop to be gradual. We have now spread out the decline to 2026 rather than assume a sharp drop this year,' the research house said.
CGSI Research said good 1H25 results set the base for an even better performance in 2H25, with the July tariff hike likely to lift 3Q25 earnings.
'We expect the delivery of strong 3Q25 results to be a potential re-rating catalyst. Investors should also be relieved that the United States has imposed a 19% tariff on Malaysia, broadly the same as other South-East Asian nations,' it said.
The research house reiterated an 'add' call on the stock with a two-sen higher target price of RM6.43.
Maybank Investment Bank Research (Maybank IB) said container volume could ease in 2H25 as early buying to get ahead of tariffs fades, but earnings remain underpinned by the first phase of the tariff hike.
'The mid-term throughput outlook is underpinned by the recent foreign direct investments and potential spillovers from the reshuffle of shipping alliances since February,' the research house said.
'Additional earnings upside may come from storage charges rising by over three times after the grace period effective 2H25, which is not yet reflected in our forecasts.'
Maybank IB has maintained its 'buy' rating, raising its target price to RM6.76 a share from RM5.85, citing stabilising geopolitics.
In contrast, TA Research reiterated a 'sell' rating with a target price of RM5.57 a share, despite 1H25 core net profit meeting expectations, accounting for 48% of the market's full-year forecast.
The research house made no changes to its earnings projections for this year to 2027.

Indonesia's 2026 budget is designed to make the country strong, President Prabowo says
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said efficiency measures would be needed to reduce the country's budget deficit. -- PHOTO: REUTERS JAKARTA (Reuters): Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto on Friday (Aug 15) said his budget for 2026 would be designed to ensure the South-East Asian country was strong, independent and prosperous, as he delivered his first speech on fiscal policy to Parliament. The budget proposal is the first developed by Prabowo's administration after he took office in October 2024. The 2025 budget was prepared by his predecessor, Joko Widodo. Prabowo has pledged to lift spending as he seeks to raise economic growth to 8 per cent during his five-year term and deliver on his campaign platform of improving welfare and achieving food and energy self-sufficiency. In his address, Prabowo said the 2026 budget deficit was seen at 2.48 per cent of gross domestic product. He said efficiency measures would need to be taken to reduce the gap and vowed to have no deficit by 2027 or 2028. For 2026, he proposed to spend 335 trillion rupiah (S$26.3 billion) on his flagship programme to deliver free meals to 82.9 million students, children and pregnant women. Prabowo allotted 171 trillion rupiah for the free meals programme this year, which he said has reached about 20 million recipients. He also promised budgetary support to decarbonise Indonesia's electricity, saying he wanted the country to use 100 per cent renewable power sources in the next ten years or earlier. Indonesia currently relies on coal for over half of its power generation. In his address, Prabowo, a former defence minister and special forces commander, also said Indonesia must modernise its military hardware, adding his country had rare earths deposits that were vital to modern defence. -- REUTERS

Chinese and Asean experts gather to explore the region's digital future
KUALA LUMPUR (Xinhua): South-East Asian nations are poised to accelerate their adoption of new technologies and the digitalization of their societies, Malaysian Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo has said. China's significant advantages in artificial intelligence (AI), cross-border systems, and other emerging high-technology fields will enable members of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean), including Malaysia, to ensure their efforts reach all levels of society, ensuring inclusive and sustainable development, Gobind said in his remarks at the 2025 China Mobile Southeast Asia Cooperation Conference. "Building a digital future requires deep cooperation with partners such as China. China holds significant advantages in next-generation network deployment, edge intelligence, AI applications, and cross-border digital platforms. Malaysia highly values its cooperation with China in the digital domain, and we welcome further collaboration," he said. For his part, Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing said in his remarks that in recent years, digital economy cooperation between China and Asean has entered a new stage of comprehensive depth, with Malaysia and China in particular having signed memorandums of understanding (MoU) to enhance investment and cooperation in the digital economy. "These emphasize the importance of seizing opportunities brought by the digital economy, green development, and AI. This not only brings development benefits to the people of both countries but also sets a new benchmark for regional digital economy development," he said. Meanwhile, China Mobile Communications Group Co., Ltd. Executive Vice President Li Huidi said that AI is now at the forefront of a new wave of technological and industrial transformation, becoming increasingly user-friendly and widely accessible, and emerging as a new driver of social progress. Brighter outlook likely for Wilmar International in 2H25
CIMB Research said the planter pointed out that refining margins in Malaysia and Indonesia are expected to remain challenging. PETALING JAYA: CIMB Research expects crude palm oil (CPO) prices to hold steady, supported by Indonesia's biodiesel policy and limited production growth. The research house shared that Wilmar International Ltd has guided for a favourable plantation outlook in the second half of financial year 2025 (2H25), underpinned by firm CPO prices, steady fresh fruit bunches (FFB) growth, and stable crushing margins. However, CIMB Research said during Wilmar's second quarter of financial year 2025 results briefing, the planter pointed out that refining margins in Malaysia and Indonesia are expected to remain challenging. 'Wilmar maintained that the plantation business should remain favourable in 2H25, underpinned by steady CPO prices, FFB output growth (5%), and limited impact from dry weather (no fires reported at its estates),' it added. The research house said refining margins remain challenging, particularly in Malaysia and Indonesia, with profits expected to be modest and dependent on raw material availability, demand trends, and market timing. The research house believed the 19% US import tariff on Malaysian and Indonesian palm oil is expected to have minimal direct impact. This is because the United States accounts for 2% to 3% of Wilmar's palm oil export volumes, and volumes can be diverted to India, Africa, or other markets. It said production growth in Indonesia for 2025 is now expected at about 5% year-on-year, slightly below earlier expectations. CIMB Research believed regulatory risks in Indonesia remain, including a pending Supreme Court decision on the CPO export permit case, an ongoing rice quality investigation, and unresolved forestry land compliance issues. 'The group expects minimal impact from the higher US import tariff on Malaysia and Indonesia and believes Indonesia's B50 biodiesel mandate is achievable,' it added. Furthermore, the research house said Wilmar expects Indonesia's B50 biodiesel mandate to be implementable if the government proceeds with the policy mandate. Meanwhile, consumer sentiment in China has improved in recent months, although recovery is expected to be gradual; downtrading persists in some categories. 'Expansion of the central kitchen business in China continues, albeit at a slower pace to refine the model and improve efficiency,' it noted.
