Hijacked taxi recovered in Upper Tongaat, three suspects arrested
The incident began in Blackburn, where a 43-year-old driver on his way to collect schoolchildren had his path blocked by two men on a dirt road.
A third man allegedly emerged from nearby sugarcane fields wielding a dagger and forced the driver into the back of the car.
The men allegedly assaulted him and tied him up before fleeing in the hijacked VW Crafter. Fortunately, no children had been picked up at the time of the hijacking.
At 8.24am, Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) received a tip-off from a concerned member of the public and immediately dispatched all available officers.
The taxi, fitted with a tracking device, was traced moving through Hambanathi and later spotted heading towards Esenembe on the R614.
RUSA officers, joined by Verulam Saps and multiple private security companies, intercepted the taxi at a petrol station in Upper Tongaat, where the men stopped to refuel.
The suspects were arrested just over 20 minutes after the hijacking took place.
Authorities praised the swift co-ordination between law enforcement and private security teams, which ensured the safe recovery of the vehicle and the driver.
RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram warned hijackings are on the rise and that criminals are changing their behaviour.
'We have noticed an increase in victims being taken with the vehicles,' said Balram.
'This is because it delays the victims from calling law enforcement or the tracking companies. They take the victims along before leaving them in an isolated area. By the time law enforcement finds the victims, the suspects are long gone.'
Balram said he has also noticed an increase in hijackings when the weather is poor or visibility is low.
'Rain and fog hamper the search helicopters, making it harder to locate the vehicles from above,' added Balram.

Manganyela was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment for each of four rape cases, 15 years for the fifth, and two years for theft. Sentences will run concurrently. IDT CEO fights back after damning bribery footage
Embattled Independent Development Trust (IDT) chief executive officer (CEO) Tebogo Malaka has denied allegations that she attempted to bribe an investigative journalist to halt a probe and 'negative' reports about her and the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure entity. This comes as Malaka and her spokesperson, Phasha Makgolane, were caught on camera allegedly trying to bribe Daily Maverick investigative journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh to stop reporting about investigations into Malaka. Malaka was suspended earlier this month following an investigation into an R800 million oxygen plant tender awarded by the IDT. In response to the backlash, the Malaka Family Trust stated that the IDT CEO did not offer a bribe, did not suggest one, and did not authorise any money. Moreover, she did not invite the investigative journalist and didn't even know him prior the meeting. 'This was a trap – engineered by those and designed to entrap her, which raises the most critical, unanswered question: Who set up the hidden cameras, and why? The public deserves to know who orchestrated this recording and whether it was done legally, ethically, or as part of a political operation,' the family said in a statement. Earlier this year, reports surfaced that Macpherson, who has since opened a case against Malaka, allegedly bribed a journalist to write negatively about the IDT, hoping to replace Malaka with an individual aligned with his party, the Democratic Alliance (DA). The Malaka Family Trust echoed the same sentiments emphasising that the IDT CEO's offence was her refusal to submit to political pressure. 'Her clashes with Minister Dean Macpherson, including board disruptions and administrative interference are well documented. It is no coincidence that this manufactured scandal emerges in the midst of that power struggle. 'Allegations of coordination between the journalist and the minister must now be taken seriously.
