Man, 31, held on suspicion of murder after elderly couple killed in house fire
Merseyside Police said. Peter Eric Greener, 77, known as Eric, died on July 16 and his partner Sheila Jackson, 83, died on July 17 following the fire at their home on South John Street in the early hours of Tuesday.
A force spokesperson said an accelerant was used to start the blaze.
The 31-year-old man from St Helens was arrested in the early hours of Sunday on suspicion of murder and remains in custody for questioning.
Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson, senior investigating officer, said: 'Although an arrest has been made, I would like to take this opportunity to remind people to pass on information directly to police or anonymously via Crimestoppers, and not to comment or post in any way which jeopardises this ongoing work.
'Extensive inquiries continue, and to that end we are still appealing for anyone with information to come forward, particularly if you live in the area of South John Street and recall seeing or hearing anything suspicious at around the time of the incident.
'Please do not assume what you know has already been reported to us, as we can quickly make that assessment.'
On Friday, pictures of the couple, including one showing Mr Greener with his arm around Ms Jackson, were released by their families through police.
Detective Chief Inspector Steve McGrath said last week it was 'sickening' and 'a truly shocking incident' and everyone in Merseyside would be 'utterly appalled' at what had happened.

Porn star found guilty of Clifton Suspension Bridge murders
A male porn star killed and dismembered a couple before dumping their remains in suitcases near Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol. Yostin Andres Mosquera, 35, killed Albert Alfonso, 62, and 71-year-old Paul Longworth on July 8 last year in the flat the two shared in Scotts Road, Shepherd's Bush, west London. On Monday, he was found guilty at Woolwich Crown Court, and will be sentenced on Oct 24. Mosquera, who was staying with the couple, 'decapitated and dismembered' the bodies, freezing some remains and bringing the rest in suitcases to Clifton Suspension Bridge, according to the prosecution. He is alleged to have repeatedly stabbed Alfonso, who suffered injuries to his torso, face and neck, while Longworth was attacked with a hammer to the back of his head and his skull was shattered, jurors at Woolwich Crown Court heard. Alfonso, who reportedly enjoyed 'extreme sex', was stabbed to death during a filmed session, with footage shown at Woolwich Crown Court recording Mosquera singing and dancing in the aftermath of the attack. Mosquera's plan was to hurl the suitcases over the bridge to dispose of the remains after the 'calculated' and 'premeditated' killings, prosecutor Deanna Heer KC said. He admitted to killing Alfonso but claimed it was manslaughter by reason of loss of control, and insisted Alfonso killed Longworth. It took a jury five hours and three minutes to unanimously find him guilty. He had told the jury he feared for his own life and believed he was about to be killed when he stabbed Alfonso. Mr Justice Bennathan KC, presiding, said: 'I am not going to pass sentence on you today although the only one I can pass on you is one of life imprisonment. 'I am going to order a psychiatric report on you. It is in your interests to co-operate with the psychiatrist so that I can decide the minimum term you are going to serve.'

Murder arrest over woman's death in Chester city centre property
A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of a 41-year-old woman at a city centre services had responded to concerns for the welfare of a woman on Canal Street, Chester, at just after 12:20 BST on Sunday, Cheshire Police attended but the woman was pronounced dead at the force said a 57-year-old man had been arrested and remained in custody for questioning. Cheshire Police said officers believed this was "an isolated incident". "A scene is currently in place and Canal Street is closed as officers conduct enquiries into the full circumstances," it added. Father who wore fancy dress on school run given ‘safeguarding' warning
A father who dressed up in a gorilla costume for his daughter's last day of term was told by her 'woke' school his actions were 'a serious safeguarding concern'. Chris Napthine, 47, wore the ape outfit to collect his seven-year-old daughter on Friday but said he later received the 'ridiculous' text from the school. Mr Napthine's daughter was on her last day of Year 2 at Hertford Vale C of E Primary School in the village of Staxton, North Yorkshire, when he decided to dress up to 'embarrass her' for a bit of fun. He said: 'That's what dads do: embarrass their daughters. I'm always playing jokes and messing about. 'The other day I put a horse's head on, so on the last day of school I put on a gorilla outfit. Then, I got this snotty text off the school, saying it's a 'serious safeguarding issue'.' The text, shared by Mr Napthine, read: 'Please do not come into school in a costume or mask. 'This is a serious safeguarding issue. It has also upset some of the children & caused concern for adults.' But Mr Napthine said he sees nothing wrong with his prank – labelling the school 'woke' for its stance. He added: 'How is that a safeguarding issue? Where is it going to end? Are the kids not going to be allowed to dress up? 'I was just trying to have a bit of a laugh, but the school have taken it dead serious. 'Ridiculous' 'I just thought it was ridiculous. Safeguarding is about the safety of the kids. A dad in a gorilla outfit is not a safeguarding issue, let alone a 'serious' one. 'I've had lots of messages of support, saying: 'What on Earth is this country coming to? A kid can identify as a cat but a dad can't dress up as a gorilla'. Paul Bradbury, chairman of the board of governors at the school, said: 'Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our pupils is not only our commitment but is a statutory responsibility for all schools. A key part of this is knowing who is on the school premises at all times. 'Parents and carers place their trust in us to safeguard their children, and it is essential that we uphold that trust by ensuring all visitors are clearly identifiable and behave in a way that supports a calm and safe learning environment. We are sure people will agree that's not possible when someone is wearing a full gorilla suit. 'Some children frightened' 'That's why we have asked the parent involved not to do this again and been clear that while some children may have been entertained, some were frightened, and our staff could not identify an adult on site looking through windows. 'We remain committed to creating a safe, supportive, and respectful environment for all pupils, staff, and visitors.' Responding to the school's statement, Mr Napthine claimed he had taken his gorilla mask off at the school – meaning both staff and his daughter were 'well aware' it was him. He added: 'I get it would be a safeguarding issue if I'd have gone and not taken it off, but I took the mask off. 'They were very well aware it was me and they knew it was me regardless of that.'
