Four Moroccan Referees Named for Women's AFCON

Rabat – The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed four Moroccan women to the refereeing crew for the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Morocco 2024, scheduled from July 5 to 26. Central referees Bouchra Karboubi and Sabah Sadir will be joined by assistant referees Fathia Jermoumi and Ihssane Nouajli in a record 46-strong officiating team, surpassing the 40 selected for the 2022 edition. CAF's final list includes 18 referees, 18 assistant referees, and 10 VAR officials representing 30 countries. Host nation Morocco contributes the highest number of on-field officials this year. Karboubi has already made history. Earlier this year, she became the first North African woman to officiate a men's Africa Cup of Nations match, taking charge of the Guinea-Bissau vs Nigeria group game in Côte d'Ivoire. She was also selected for the Paris 2024 Olympic football games and officiated the Group C opener between Spain and Japan. Sadir has officiated extensively in youth World Cup qualifiers and is steadily building her profile in CAF and FIFA competitions. Jermoumi and Nouajli, meanwhile, have climbed the domestic ladder to earn continental recognition. The quartet's call-up underlines the Royal Moroccan Football Federation's growing investment in the development of female referees. Eddy Maillet, CAF Director of Refereeing, 'Africa has made serious leaps in the development of women match officials… To fine-tune the last details, we are organising a preparation course for all the referees of the competition, starting from June 25 in Rabat.' Morocco is hosting WAFCON for the second time running, following the successful 2022 edition that saw the Atlas Lionesses qualify for their first-ever Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. This year's matches will be held across six stadiums in five cities: Larbi Zaouli and Pere Jego stadiums in Casablanca, the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, El Bachir Stadium in Mohammedia, the Honor Stadium in Oujda, and the Municipal Stadium in Berkane. Morocco Holds 60th Place in FIFA Women's World Rankings, Remains Among Africa's Top Three

Rabat – Morocco's women's national football team has kept its 60th position in the latest FIFA Women's World Ranking, released today. The Atlas Lionesses remain among the top three African teams, behind Nigeria, which ranks 36th, and South Africa, placed 54th. The Moroccan squad, which has seen growing support in recent years, keeps its spot after a quiet quarter in international play. Their consistency helps maintain their standing as a key force in African women's football. At the top of the global rankings, the US still leads. Spain holds 2nd spot, and Germany stays in 3rd. Brazil climbed to 4th after defeating the US in April. England fell to 5th, while Sweden stayed close behind in 6th. Japan and Canada dropped after recent defeats, Japan to Brazil, and Canada to Argentina. North Korea kept its 9th place, and France returned to the top ten, pushing the Netherlands out. The Atlas Lionesses are preparing to compete in the Women's African Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set to run from July 5 to 26. Morocco will face Zambia, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo in Group A following the tournament draw. The selected venues include Larbi Zaouli and Père Jégo Stadiums in Casablanca, Rabat's Olympic Stadium, El Bachir Stadium in Mohammedia, Stade d'Honneur in Oujda, and the Municipal Stadium in Berkane. Morocco's Women's Team Prepares for WAFCON on Home Soil

Rabat – The Moroccan women's national football team has entered a crucial training camp from June 11 to 19 at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Maamoura, near Sale, as part of its preparations for the upcoming Africa Women's Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which is set to take place in Morocco from July 5 to 26. According to CAF, matches of the continental tournament will be played across six stadiums in five different cities. The selected venues include Larbi Zaouli and Père Jégo Stadiums in Casablanca, Rabat's Olympic Stadium, El Bachir Stadium in Mohammedia, Stade d'Honneur in Oujda, and the Municipal Stadium in Berkane. National coach Jorge Vilda Rodriguez has summoned 30 players from the training camp, according to a statement published by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF). The squad includes a mix of seasoned internationals and emerging talents across all positions. Among the goalkeepers called up are Khadija Rmichi, Fatima Zahra Jabraoui, Hind Hassnaoui, and Iness Arouaissa. The defense line features players such as Hannan Ait Lhaj, Zeineb Radouani, Nouhaila Benzina, and Yassmine Amrabet. In midfield, familiar names like Ghizlane Chebbak, Anissa Lahmari, and Sara Kassi are joined by several other profiles, while the attacking lineup includes Fatima Tagnaout, Btissam Jraidi, and Kenza Chabil, among others. Having reached the final of the last WAFCON in 2022 and earned a historic qualification for the 2023 World Cup, the Atlas Lionesses are entering this edition with high ambitions. The home advantage, coupled with growing public support, is expected to play a key role in their performance. The team looks to capitalize on this momentum to establish Morocco as a major force in African women's football. This preparatory stage also offers Jorge Vilda the opportunity to further evaluate his squad and narrow down his tactical options ahead of the final team selection. Regarding Morocco's squad, it is the 'best I have coached so far,' Vilda once said at a press conference. Host nation Morocco will compete in Group A alongside Zambia, Senegal, and DR Congo. Group B brings together Nigeria with Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana. Meanwhile, Group C features South Africa, Ghana, Mali, and Tanzania in what promises to be a tightly contested stage of the tournament. The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) unveiled yesterday the official logo and match emblem for the TotalEnergies CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2024. With just weeks remaining before the continental tournament kicks off, this training camp marks a key step in shaping Morocco's campaign on home soil. Tags: Atlas LionessessportsWAFCONwomen football
