Ian Machado Garry: 'I'll box the ears off' Jack Della Maddalena after 'sloppy' UFC 315 win
It looks like Ian Machado Garry wasn't too impressed with what he saw from the new UFC welterweight champion.
The Irish contender was critical of Jack Della Maddalena's unanimous decision win over Belal Muhammad in the main event of Saturday's UFC 315 in Canada. To the surprise of many, Della Maddalena took the UFC welterweight belt from Muhammad after outboxing him for 25 minutes, while also avoiding any major grappling exchanges.
Despite the big and dominant upset win for Della Maddalena, Machado Garry wasn't too high on the performance.
"You have a new champion in Jack Della Maddalena. He had a great performance, but sloppy," Machado Garry said in a video posted on Instagram. "The rumor is that Islam Makhachev is moving up to 170. If he does, then all of us welterweights have to take a step back and give the man respect he deserves. But if negotiations don't go so well, then you have a tall, blonde Irishman who's ready to take over the UFC and get that belt and I will smoke Jack Della Maddalena. I'll box the ears off him."
UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev has expressed interest in moving up to welterweight for a second UFC title. UFC CEO Dana White has also expressed interest in giving Makhachev his chance at welterweight gold, and many expect that fight to be next.
This could put many welterweight contenders in difficult positions, including Machado Garry, so he has a few suggestions for some of the ways the promotion could match make things at 170 pounds.
"I was wrong. Jack Della Maddalena is the new champion in the division because Belal didn't shoot any takedowns. Mental, I know," Machado Garry said. "So here are the matchups I think we should see in the UFC welterweight division:
"I want to see Carlos prates take on Geoff Neal: two heavy hitters, two big southpaws. That's a fight I'm interested in to see. Then Leon Edwards – he's always moaning and complaining: 'I don't want to fight any wrestlers. I want to fight strikers.' Then let's give him the most awkward striker in the entire UFC in Michael 'Venom' Page. That's a fight I'd like to watch."

Dominick Cruz responds to Jon Anik labeling Merab Dvalishvili bantamweight GOAT
Dominick Cruz responds to Jon Anik labeling Merab Dvalishvili bantamweight GOAT Dominick Cruz didn't appear too bothered with Jon Anik picking Merab Dvalishvili as the bantamweight GOAT over him. The UFC's play-by-play commentator declared UFC champion Dvalishvili as the greatest bantamweight of all time over his good friend and fellow broadcast partner. Cruz, a former two-time UFC champion and former WEC champion, is widely considered the greatest bantamweight of all time. But with Dvalishvili's recent run, which includes numerous former champions, many are pondering if he's done enough to surpass Cruz. Cruz used a basketball reference when reacting to Anik dubbing Dvalishvili (19-4 MMA, 12-2 UFC) as the bantamweight GOAT. "I think that Jon Anik knows – he makes media, he knows how to do that," Cruz told MMA Junkie. "That's my boy. I love that dude. The fact that there's even a conversation with me involved, it's not for me to decide something like that. I'm not saying it's this level, but as a parallel you're talking about Lebron (James) and (Michael) Jordan, right? "You're never going to convince me ever, ever, no matter what, under any circumstance that Lebron is better than Jordan. To me. But then you got the latter that's going to say the opposite. I love that there's even a conversation. If there's a conversation, then that's what this thing is about – and you know what? Merab is making it a conversation, too. Good for him." Cruz resonates with Dvalishvili's long road to the top. "This dude has run through the ladder," Cruz continued. "This dude has had to fight up and down the ladder exactly the same way that I did. I had to fight my way through the hardest fights in the division, multiple rematches, before I got my shots. I had to earn every scrap, and I see that similarity in Merab's fights. I tip my hat to him." Dvalishvili will look to notch his second title defense when he runs things back with Sean O'Malley (18-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) in Saturday's UFC 316 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) main event at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

NBA Hall-of-Famer Paul Pierce says he walked 20 miles in robe to pay off on-air bet
NBA Hall-of-Famer Paul Pierce says he walked 20 miles in robe to pay off on-air bet (KTLA) – Don't let anyone ever tell you Paul Pierce isn't a man of his word. On Thursday, the Boston Celtics legend and former Los Angeles Clippers player appeared to make good on a promise to walk to work in his robe from his home somewhere in the San Fernando Valley to the Fox Sports studio in Century City. Advertisement The reason? Pierce's overconfidence in his former team. After the Celtics blew a 20-point lead in Game 1 against the underdog New York Knicks earlier this week, Pierce proudly proclaimed he wasn't worried about the team's performance or the possibility that the upstart Knicks could dethrone the defending champions. 'If the Celtics lose Game 2 at home, I promise you, I'm walking here tomorrow,' Pierce boldly announced during an appearance on FS1, as his co-hosts could be heard trying to talk him out of it. 'I'm walking here. I'm walking here. 15 miles. I'm walking here. In my robe. No shoes on. Bare feet. If the Celtics lose.' 'RIP Skype': What to know about your data Advertisement Hindsight aside, Pierce had reason to be optimistic. The Celtics are the reigning NBA champs, have home court advantage over New York and were betting favorites to beat the Knicks. Plus, blowing a 20-point lead as the favorites in the NBA Playoffs is just a fluke… right? Wrong. On Wednesday, it was deja vu for Pierce and fellow Celtics supporters. The Knicks outscored the Celtics 30-17 in the fourth quarter of Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, capped off with a game winning free throw by New York point guard Jalen Brunson and a clutch steal by forward Mikal Bridges to leave the crowd at TD Garden stunned. Advertisement And with that, Pierce had to either follow through with his promise, or be vilified as a liar. But Pierce took it in stride, posting a screenshot of his projected route to work shortly after the final buzzer went off. With two barfing emojis, the screenshot showed a 20-mile, eight-hour walk from his home to the Fox Studios. And, on Thursday, before the sun came up, Pierce posted a video on social media that showed him heading out on his morning commute – robe and all. He wasn't barefoot, but we'll give him a pass. Throughout the morning, Pierce checked in on Instagram, providing updates about his progress. He even took time to chat with some fans who found him on the street. Advertisement As of 12:30 p.m., he was live on social media, responding to fans who tuned in for the final stretch. 'I think I lost five pounds,' he joked during the live-stream. 'My feet hurt, my toes. I need a shower.' He also thanked fans who followed during his journey, giving him words of encouragement and even those who provided him with water along his route. Some on social media questioned the veracity of Pierce 'walking the walk,' accusing him of not appearing sufficiently sweaty, but the 2008 NBA Finals MVP swears it was legit. 'I'm never going to do this again,' he laughed. 'You thought this wasn't real? It's real.'
