JPX and Nikkei to launch new index on human capital in July

TOKYO -- JPX Market Innovation & Research and Nikkei announced on Thursday that they will jointly start calculating a new stock index, the JPX-Nikkei Index Human Capital 100, from July 22.
The index will include 100 companies in Japan that are highly rated in human capital strategies, and aims to encourage both local and foreign investments in companies that effectively utilize human resources.
Human capital refers to treating employees' knowledge, skills and motivation as valuable assets. Increasingly, corporate executives and investors believe that companies that are proactive in managing human capital -- through strategies such as inclusive hiring across gender and nationality, training advanced talent in areas like digital technology, and raising pay to reflect performance -- can better attract skilled workers and strengthen competitive positions globally.
The new index is expected to represent 100 companies from the JPX-Nikkei Index 400. The index's value will be updated and published in real time, with constituents reviewed annually every August.
This is the third stock index created by JPX and Nikkei, following the JPX-Nikkei Index 400 and the JPX-Nikkei Mid and Small Cap Index.
The JPX-Nikkei Index Human Capital 100 will assess companies based on how well they address human capital issues, such as through increased wages and annual salaries -- which is a growing challenge for many Japanese firms. Inclusion in the index may improve a company's market standing, potentially encouraging more companies to adopt human capital-driven strategies.
Companies from the JPX-Nikkei Index 400 will be ranked according to the Comprehensive Human Capital Score, with the top scorers making it onto the new list.
This score reflects human capital assessments by ESG Book, a Germany-based provider of environmental, social and governance (ESG) data. Companies receive extra points for meeting each of the following conditions: if the growth rate of the average annual salary of employees is in the top 10% of the JPX-Nikkei Index 400; if the growth rate of operating profit per employee is in the top 10% of the JPX-Nikkei Index 400; and if the ratio of female managers is 30% or more.

But he did not state whether a letter would be sent to Japan, leading a high-ranking official handling economic issues to say: 'We have no idea when such a letter may arrive or even if it will arrive. We must prepare while thinking about every and all possibilities.' Trump has upped his criticism of Japan in recent days, griping that it was not buying enough U.S. cars or rice. A government source said U.S. officials likely did not want to see negotiations broken off, particularly in the manner of a letter sent in the mail, but added that there was nothing the government could do if Trump decided he wanted additional tariffs implemented.

The rice is planned to be sold to businesses under discretionary contracts. Details including the amount of rice to be released will be decided later. The move comes after the government released its stockpiled rice to retailers and others to curb soaring prices of the staple food. A recent survey showed that the 2025 acreage for staple food rice was the largest in five years as of the end of April. As the 2025 rice crop for processed products is expected to decrease, people including those in the sake brewery industry have been calling for the release of government-stockpiled rice for them by around mid-September, when the brewing process starts. KANAZAWA, Japan (Kyodo) -- Seventy percent of shops and restaurants currently operating from temporary facilities in the earthquake-hit Noto Peninsula in central Japan have no prospects of returning to their original locations, a Kyodo News survey showed. Nearly half of the 46 businesses facing difficulties cited a lack of funding as the main obstacle, amid falling customer numbers and sales following the magnitude-7.6 quake that struck Ishikawa Prefecture on New Year's Day last year. The survey was based on interviews conducted in early June with 64 of some 70 businesses operating in 15 makeshift spaces or buildings offered rent-free in the region. More than 40 percent of the respondents saw their shops completely destroyed in the disaster. Of the respondents, 40 said their income fell, with 33 of them citing fewer customers. Asked about their current concerns, 44 cited declines in customers and revenues, while 23 were worried about securing funds for restarting. Retsuko Hirata, who runs a shop selling Japanese sake and clothing items at an arcade in Wajima, said revenue has dropped by 20 percent from before the quake. "I am worried whether I can carry on my business as the number of tourists has dropped and the population continues to decline," she said. The region facing the Sea of Japan has been a popular tourist destination for fresh seafood, hot spring spas and traditional artwork, including lacquerware. The quake claimed more than 600 lives, including those who died from related health issues afterward, and caused over 160,000 houses to fully or partially collapse across Ishikawa, Niigata, Toyama and Fukui prefectures.
