Lexi Thompson shares Meijer LPGA Classic lead in bid for her first victory in 6 years
BELMONT, Mich. — Lexi Thompson birdied two of the final three holes Saturday in the Meijer LPGA Classic for a share of the third-round lead with five others in a bid to win for the first time in just over six years.
Thompson shot a 4-under 68, rebounding with birdies on Nos. 16 and 18 after driving into the water and making a bogey on the par-5 14th.
'Not my best ball-striking day,' Thompson said.' But I scrambled very well and stayed positive, patient, and that's what it's kind of all about.'
At 11-under 205 at Blythefield County Club, she was tied with Nanna Koerstz Madsen , Madelene Sagstrom , Sofia Garcia , Hye-Jin Choi and Carlota Ciganda . Thompson was back on top a year after losing a playoff to Lilia Vu on the tree-lined course.
'Everybody is going to come out swinging,' Thompson said. 'Good weather tomorrow, so I know birdies will have to be made and I'll have to go pin-seeking. I will hope for the best, go out there and embrace the opportunity, and really love on the fans.'
The 30-year-old from Florida won the last of her 11 LPGA Tour titles in early June 2019 at the ShopRite LPGA Classic. She's making her sixth start of the season in a part-time tour schedule, and also is set to play next week in the major KPMG Women's PGA Championship in Texas.
Koerstz Madsen bogeyed the final two holes to lose a two-stroke lead.
'The positive thing is now I feel what's going on when I get a little nervous, so I can work on what I need to be focusing on tomorrow,' Koerstz Madsen. 'Because I'm definitely going to be nervous tomorrow.'
Garcia had the lead at 13 under after 12 holes, then bogeyed the next three.
'I'm happy I was able to get it back together,' Garcia said. 'Made a really good chip out on 16. Was able to have a good finish.'
Choi missed a 5-foot birdie putt on 18 in the final group.
Sagstrom, the T-Mobile Match Play winner in Las Vegas in April, had an eagle-birdie-eagle burst on Nos. 4-6.
'I always try to attack the course,' Sagstrom said." I think I do play quite aggressive. I think this course, it demands shots."
Karis Davidson was 9 under after a 71. Megan Khang was another stroke back with Chanettee Wannasaen , Bronte Law and Celine Boutier .

GOLF Rookie Avani placed second at Hulencourt Women's Open Avani Prashanth produced a fine round of 3-under 69 to follow up on her opening 4-under 68 to stay in second place at the Hulencourt Women's Open golf on the Ladies European Tour. The 18-year-old from Bengaluru now sits at seven under par, just one stroke behind the leader, Germany's Helen Briem (68-68). The other Indians in the field to make the cut were Diksha Dagar (72-73) in T-38th place and Tvesa Malik (76-70) in T-50th place. The other Indians who took part were Vani Kapoor (76-73), Sneha Singh (74-75), Amandeep Drall (74-76) and Hitaashee Bakshi (79-74), and all of them missed the cut. Avani began her second round on the back nine with a birdie on the tenth and picked up a second shot on the 13th hole. She then had a run of eight pars till the third of the front nine. GOLF Talwar makes cut in Czech Republic Indian golfer Saptak Talwar made the cut at the Raiffeisenbank Golf Challenge with a second-round score of 1-under 70 at Golf Resort Kaskáda, keeping his campaign alive for the weekend. With rounds of 72 and 70, the 26-year-old sits at even-par 142 and is tied for 60th place. Talwar began the day on the front nine with a birdie on his first hole. He picked up another shot on the fifth only to drop one on the sixth before closing the front nine with a birdie. On the back nine he made birdie on the 11th hole and followed that with a bogey on the 12th. He made his final birdie of the round on the 15th hole but lost shots on the 16th and 18th holes to end the day with 70. His combined 36 round score sits at even par with scores of 72 and 70. The second day ended with a four-way tie for the lead between Spain's Sebastian Garcia (65-67), England's Joshua Berry (68-64), Welshman Stuart Manley (66-66) American Palmer Jackson (65-67). The leaders all have a 36-hole combined score of 10-under par.
