Why? Aging, hormones, medications, stress, and underlying health conditions can all tweak your body's thermostat. Here's how sweat patterns typically change over time—and when those shifts signal something more serious.
In your 20s and 30s
During early adulthood, your sweat glands are typically at their most active. This is when your metabolism is still running high, muscle mass is relatively abundant, and hormone levels (especially estrogen and testosterone) are more stable. You may notice you sweat more during workouts or stressful situations—but unless you have an underlying condition, your body generally regulates heat efficiently.
In your 40s and 50s
This is when many people—especially women—begin to notice changes in how and when they sweat, says Dr. Asmi Berry, a California-based dermatologist.
'Hormones play a huge role in regulating sweat,' she says. 'Estrogen and progesterone shifts like those during perimenopause or menopause can disrupt the body's temperature regulation and lead to hot flashes or night sweats.' Your thyroid levels also increase as you enter midlife, which can raise the body's baseline temperature and trigger more sweating.

During this time, men may also experience changes due to a gradual decline in testosterone, though it's typically less dramatic.
In your 60s and beyond
As you get older, your sweat glands can become less active. This may mean you sweat less overall—but there's a downside, too. Your body may also become less efficient at cooling itself.
'This makes older adults vulnerable to heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heat stroke,' says Dr. Marjorie Jenkins, professor and dean of health affairs at the University of North Dakota and chief clinical advisor at Incora Health, a health technology company focused on women's wellness. 'This reduced sweating capacity is a normal part of aging, but it's something we need to be aware of, particularly during hot weather.'
Sweat triggers
Sweating can be triggered by various factors beyond just heat. 'Vigorous exercise is the most obvious trigger, but anxiety and emotional distress are also major culprits,' says Berry. 'Physical pain, spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol, hot drinks, humidity, certain medications, and fever from infections can all cause increased sweating.'

Remember: sweating isn't a bad thing. It's a way for the body to automatically regulate temperature. 'When our body isn't able to do this, it can cause a heat stroke and even cause a medical emergency,' Berry says.
Medications might be making you sweat
Certain drugs list excessive sweating—also called diaphoresis—as a common side effect, either because they affect your nervous system, hormone levels, or how your body regulates temperature.
Antidepressants, especially selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like fluoxetine (Prozac) or sertraline (Zoloft), are among the most common meds to cause sweating, says Jenkins. 'They can increase serotonin levels in the brain, which in turn affects thermoregulation and can lead to excessive sweating, particularly at night,' she says.
Opioid pain relievers, such as oxycodone or morphine, can also disrupt the body's ability to manage heat, triggering perspiration.

Jenkins says other drug classes to watch include diabetes medications (like insulin or sulfonylureas)—which can cause low blood sugar, a well-known sweat trigger—and thyroid medications, which can ramp up metabolism and make you feel warm or flushed. Fever reducers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can induce sweating as your body breaks a fever.
'Even some blood pressure medications can trigger sweating,' adds Jenkins. 'What's particularly concerning is that medication withdrawal, from substances like opiates, alcohol, nicotine, or benzodiazepines, can also cause excessive sweating and should be monitored carefully.'
If you suspect your medication is increasing your sweat levels, don't stop taking it abruptly. Instead, talk with your health care provider. They may be able to adjust your dosage, recommend timing strategies, or switch you to a different treatment that's less likely to leave you drenched
Could it be hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis, which affects an estimated 5% of Americans, is a medical condition where the body sweats excessively, beyond what's needed for temperature regulation. It causes the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, underarms, or the face to sweat, sometimes resulting in skin rashes, bacterial infections, and yeast infections. Hyperhidrosis can occur without an obvious trigger—often starting in adolescence or early adulthood—and can persist for years without a clear cause.
Secondary hyperhidrosis is caused by an underlying issue like medications, infections, endocrine disorders, or even certain cancers.
'While hyperhidrosis isn't life-threatening, its impact on quality of life can be profound,' says Jenkins. 'Many people experience social anxiety, isolation, and distress that can prevent intimacy and lead to embarrassment about going out in public.'
If sweating is severe, persistent, or affecting your quality of life, it's important to talk to a dermatologist or your doctor. There are effective treatments ranging from topical prescriptions to Botox.

Sure, ideally you'd have started strength training years (maybe decades) ago. But 'there's no age limit on the muscle's ability to gain strength or even muscle mass,' says Debra Atkinson, C.S.C.S., founder at Flipping 50. 'With older adults who've been previously sedentary it's just about place and pace. We start at the right place and progress at the right pace.' The primary goal, says Gabrielle Lyon, D.O., founder of the Institute for Muscle-Centric Medicine and author of Forever Strong: A New, Science-Based Strategy for Aging Well, is longevity. 'If you want to be fit at 80, you must train with intention in your 50s,' says Dr. Lyon. 'The stronger you are now, the more resilient you'll be later.' That said, before you jump into the weight room—or start any new fitness program—you should always talk to your doctor, especially if you have any medical conditions like osteoporosis that might require movement modifications. Meet the experts: Debra Atkinson, C.S.C.S., is the founder at Flipping 50. Gabrielle Lyon, D.O., is the founder of the Institute for Muscle-Centric Medicine and author of Forever Strong: A New, Science-Based Strategy for Aging Well. Pooja Gidwani, M.D., is a board-certified internist and longevity and performance specialist in California. Here's how lifting after 50 can help you hold on to (or build new!) strength—and so much more. 1. It prevents age-related muscle loss. After age 30, you naturally start to lose muscle mass at a rate of three to five percent per decade—a decline that accelerates after 60. This age-related loss of muscle strength and function is known as sarcopenia, and 'it's one of the biggest predictors of functional decline in older adults,' says Dr. Lyon. But that decline can be counteracted, and muscle strength and function can be improved, with strength training, even in older adults, according to a 2022 study published in the journal Age and Aging. 'Resistance training creates micro-tears in muscle fibers, which then repair and rebuild stronger,' explains Pooja Gidwani, M.D., a board-certified internist and longevity and performance specialist in California. 'In older adults, the response is blunted compared to younger individuals, but it's still very much active.' 2. It protects and strengthens your bones. Bone density also decreases as you age—especially for postmenopausal women, who can lose up to 20 percent of their bone mass in the five to seven years after menopause due to declining estrogen levels. 'After menopause, estrogen levels drop and osteoclast activity (bone breakdown) tends to outpace osteoblast—or bone-building cell—activity,' says Dr. Gidwani. But weightlifting puts mechanical stress on bones, which triggers osteoblast activity. 'It's one of the few natural ways to stimulate bone density without medication,' she adds. 'I often describe it this way to patients: your muscles tug on your bones, and your bones respond by becoming stronger.' 3. It helps your brain function better. Lifting weights may also offer serious brain benefits, including functional brain changes and increased cognitive function in adults, including older adults, according to a systematic review in Frontiers in Psychology. It also may boost levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and reduce depression symptoms in older adults, a 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis in Geriatric Nursing determined. The study authors note that BDNF is important for maintaining brain function and reducing the risk of age-related diseases. 'For older adults, this is especially important,' says Dr. Lyon. 'Strength training can even reduce the risk of dementia, and improve mood by supporting better sleep and reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression. It's one of the most powerful tools we have to support both mental sharpness and emotional resilience.' 4. It can improve your metabolic health. Muscle is one of the most metabolically active tissues in your body: It helps regulate blood sugar, improves insulin sensitivity, and burns calories. 'As women age and estrogen declines, there's a natural shift toward increased fat storage, particularly around the midsection, and insulin resistance,' explains Dr. Gidwani. Insulin resistance is linked to weight gain, type 2 diabetes, and an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and certain types of cancer. "Strength training is a potent antidote,' Dr. Gidwani says. 'It helps preserve and even build muscle mass, which supports a healthier metabolism, better blood sugar control, and lower inflammation. I often say that muscle is your metabolic engine. You want to keep that engine running strong." In a 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Journal of Sport and Health Science, resistance training improved body fat, metabolic risk, and inflammation in postmenopausal and older females. 5. It enhances balance and coordination. Falls are the leading cause of injury-related death in adults over 65, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 'Strength training helps improve balance and coordination by targeting the muscles and systems that keep us stable, like your core, legs, and the muscles around your hips and ankles,' says Dr. Lyon. 'Lifting weights also trains something called proprioception, which is your body's awareness of where it is in space. That means you're not just getting stronger, you're also improving your body's communication with the brain; over time, this leads to better coordination, quicker reactions, and a reduced risk of falls.' Older adults who followed a combined balance and resistance training program over 12 weeks significantly improved their sit-to-stand muscle power (a real-world measure of lower-limb muscle strength and power often used to assess mobility), functional mobility, and dynamic balance in a small 2025 study published in Gait & Posture—which would correlate with a 48 percent reduced risk of falls. How to Start Weightlifting After 50 You don't need to join a gym and start hoisting heavy barbells to reap the benefits of weight lifting. The below tips can help you ease into a sustainable routine. That said, working with a certified trainer or physical therapist who understands age-related needs will ensure you're moving safely and efficiently. And don't forget to get the all-clear from your doctor before getting started. 1. Start with two days a week. Just two sessions a week is enough to treat sarcopenia, according to the Age and Aging study. You can work your way up to more, but keep in mind that 'decreased estrogen means ligaments and tendons are less resilient,' says Atkinson. 'A longer warm-up and cool-down will reduce injuries, and you may benefit from more recovery between sessions (think: Monday and Thursday versus Monday and Wednesday).' 2. Incorporate functional movements. 'Lifting weights is all about staying capable,' says Dr. Lyon. 'Muscle isn't just for strength. It also supports mobility and stability.' Focus on total-body workouts that target all major muscle groups, and exercises that mimic daily activities—like getting up from a chair or carrying groceries—can help you maintain independence as you age. 3. Prioritize form over weight. Atkinson recommends one to two sets of 15 to 20 repetitions for each move you do. 'The neural connection is responsible for the greatest gains in the first six to eight (and potentially 10 to 12) weeks and it can't be rushed by heavier weights,' she explains. 5 Surprising Causes of Hernias to Have on Your Radar

The health issue needs to be corrected with surgery. Getting a hernia sounds like the opposite of a good time, so people paid attention when Suki Waterhouse recently revealed that she got one from wearing tight pants. ''Suki you never tweet anymore,'' she wrote on X. 'Have you ever considered I wore pants so tight 6 months ago it caused a hernia & I've been too scared to tell you?' The Daisy Jones & the Six star also shared a photo of herself onstage wearing second-skin pants and lying in what appears to be a hospital bed. While most people have at least heard of a hernia before, the details surrounding what they are and what causes them may be a little vague. Can you actually get a hernia from wearing tight pants? According to doctors we spoke with, this is actually a thing. With that in mind, these are the most surprising causes of hernias to have on your radar—for the just in case, of course. Meet the experts: Mir Ali, M.D., is medical director of MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center at Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, CA; Jennifer Wider, M.D., is a women's health expert and author of The New Mom's Survival Guide; Christine Greves, M.D., is an ob-gyn at the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies in Orlando, Florida. What is a hernia? A hernia is a sac that's formed by the lining of the abdominal cavity, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. This sac comes through a hole or weak area in a layer of the abdomen wall called the fascia that surrounds the muscle. There are several types of hernias, and they're usually identified by their location and cause, according to Mir Ali, M.D., medical director of MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center at Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, CA. The most common type is an inguinal hernia, which is a bulging of contents of the abdomen through a weak area in the lower abdominal wall, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). However, you can also get a femoral hernia (in the upper thigh), hiatal hernia (in the diaphragm muscle), incisional hernia (through a scar from abdominal surgery), and umbilical hernia (around the belly button). People may have no symptoms from a hernia outside of a visible bulge under the skin, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. But some people may feel discomfort, pain, heaviness, or a burning feeling, per the NIDDK. Symptoms may also get worse when you strain, lift, cough, or stand for a long periods of time. As hernias grow, the small intestine may get stuck in the hole and lose its blood supply in a complication known as a strangulated hernia. This is life-threatening and may cause symptoms like sudden and severe pain, bloating, nausea, and vomiting, according to the NIDDK. Surprising causes of hernias Any activity or medical issue that increases pressure on the stomach wall and muscles may lead to a hernia, Dr. Ali says. Lifting heavy objects is a big potential cause of a hernia—it can put pressure on the abdominal wall, straining the muscles and tissues in the area and leading to a weakening or tear if you go well beyond your usual capacity or don't use proper lifting technique, Dr. Ali explains. Having obesity also doubles the risk of a hernia. This is because excess weight puts constant pressure on the abdominal wall, which can make it more likely for weak spots to form, creating a hernia, Dr. Ali explains. But there are other causes that aren't as well known. Keep these in mind. Allergies Having a chronic cough or chronic sneezing from allergies or another upper respiratory condition can raise your risk of a hernia. 'Anything where you're straining the abdominal wall can be an issue,' Dr. Ali says. When you increase pressure in the belly region, it can cause a hernia to form. Constipation Dealing with chronic constipation is a risk factor for developing a hernia. Why? Straining can put pressure on your intestinal wall, raising the odds the contents in your abdomen will push out through a weak spot, Dr. Ali explains. Repeated pregnancies Having several pregnancies can raise your risk of developing a hernia, says women's health expert Jennifer Wider, M.D., author of The New Mom's Survival Guide. 'As the fetus grows in the uterus, there is an increase [in] abdominal pressure," she explains. 'In addition, the hormones that are released during pregnancy relax the muscles, allowing the belly to grow." Both of these can increase the risk of an umbilical hernia (which is around the belly button). Repeated pregnancies can repeatedly stress these areas of the body, explains Christine Greves, M.D., an ob-gyn at the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies in Orlando, Florida. 'The abdominal wall muscles and connective tissue can weaken the more times they need to expand," she says. 'This puts women at a higher risk of hernia." Dr. Greves says it can be hard to prevent hernias from repeat pregnancies, but maintaining a healthy weight and strengthening core muscles may help. Though women should consult their doctor before beginning an exercise program postpartum. Putting on or taking off tight pants Wearing tight pants alone is unlikely to cause a hernia, according to Dr. Ali. 'In fact, when a patient has a hernia, there are belts that put pressure on the area to hold it in,' he says. But, straining hard to pull on tight pants or to take them off could cause a hernia, Dr. Ali says. Getting older Inguinal hernias are most common in people between the ages of 75 and 80. There are a few reasons why getting older raises your risk of hernia, according to Dr. Ali. Those include muscles naturally weakening over time and a drop in tissue elasticity. That doesn't mean you're doomed to get a hernia as you age: Strength training exercises, especially around the core, can help to combat this, he says. But, again, talk to your doctor before starting a new exercise program, especially if you have any pre-existing conditions. What to do if you suspect you have a hernia If you think you have a hernia, it's important to get it evaluated by a healthcare professional. 'If there is some doubt, diagnostic studies like ultrasounds and CT scans can help identify a hernia,' Dr. Ali says. Unfortunately, there's no pill or cream that can fix a hernia—surgery to repair the weak abdominal wall tissue and close the hole is the only thing that can permanently fix this, Dr. Ali says. Most hernias are closed with stitches or mesh patches. Hernias don't usually come back after they're treated, according to Dr. Ali. But it is possible to get another one in a different location.
