Moradabad Municipal Corporation gears up to inaugurate War Museum on July 4
Moradabad (Uttar Pradesh) [India], May 15 (ANI): The municipal corporation of Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh is gearing up to display the victory stories of the Indian armed forces at the War Museum, which is currently under construction. The museum will also exhibit the stories of 'Indian heroes' in all major wars and terrorist operations - events from 1947 to the Pulwama terror attack.
Moradabad Municipal Commissioner Divyanshu Patel informed that the civic body was constructing Kargil Vijay Smarak, Captain Vijayant Thapar's memorial, and the War Museum at the cost of Rs 25 crore, which would be inaugurated on July 4. This is being done for the 25th anniversary of the Kargil War (1999), which is scheduled to be celebrated on July 26.
'On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Kargil War (1999), the Municipal Corporation of Moradabad is constructing the Kargil Vijay Smarak, Captain Vijayant Thapar's memorial, War Museum for Rs 25 crore. It will be inaugurated on July 4, and we have planned to include events from 1947 to the Pulwama attack in it,' Patel told ANI.
The municipal commissioner said the recently launched Operation Sindoor would also find a place in the museum, and a memorial for the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks has also been included, in line with the theme of cultural nationalism.
'We will also include Operation Sindoor in it, and we have made constructions showcasing the achievements of Maharana Sanga, Maharana Pratap and Prithviraj Chauhan, symbols of national pride. A memorial of the 26/11 terror attack has also been included in it. The Municipal Corporation Moradabad is continuously working on the theme of cultural nationalism,' he added.
The Indian Army launched Operation Sindoor in response to the ghastly Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people. India struck deep into Pakistan territory on May 7 to destroy nine terror camps linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Hizbul Mujahideen.
The Indian Armed Forces' precision strikes on nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) resulted in the elimination of high-profile terrorists affiliated with LeT and JeM, including Maulana Yusuf Azhar, wanted for the IC-814 hijacking, sources told ANI.
According to sources, targets also included key figures involved in radical indoctrination, weapons training, and the coordination of terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir. (ANI)

India, China discuss rare earth curbs amid auto industry concerns
By Sudhi Ranjan Sen and Alisha Sachdev Indian officials discussed China's rare earth restrictions during talks with that country's vice foreign minister this week, people familiar with the matter said, as automakers continue to warn of a looming shortage that may disrupt output in the South Asian nation. The issue was raised during a meeting on Thursday between Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and China's Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong in New Delhi, the people said, asking not to be identified because the discussions were private. The two sides agreed to hold further talks about critical mineral supplies and broader economic and trade issues, they said. China's export curbs on rare earth magnets — used in everything from smartphones to electric vehicles — are causing delays in shipments of auto parts to India, worrying carmakers about major disruptions to production. There are some signs that Indian automakers may be facing tougher conditions than their counterparts in other countries in securing the supplies from China, with Beijing rejecting some applications for India-bound shipments. In a readout of the meeting between Misri and Sun, India's Ministry of External Affairs didn't specifically refer to the discussion about rare earths, although it hinted at ongoing talks. 'The two sides agreed to hold certain functional dialog including in the economic and trade areas to discuss and resolve specific issues of concern,' the ministry said on Friday, without providing details of any future meetings. China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Sun and Misri 'held a candid and in-depth exchange of views on bilateral exchanges and cooperation as well as international and regional issues of mutual interest.' Indian carmakers have been lobbying the government to push China to ease restrictions on rare earth magnets. They're also planning to visit Beijing this month to make their case to officials and suppliers there, people familiar with the matter said. A proposed delegation of about 20 members from auto and component firms is awaiting support from the Chinese embassy to secure appointments in Beijing, they said. The fact that India has now raised the rare earth issue with China in a diplomatic forum signals to automakers that a resolution may be in sight. Recent trade talks between the US and China have also increased optimism that restrictions may be eased. The two-day visit by Sun follows Misri's trip to Beijing in January, and comes as both countries take steps to rebuild ties following the end of a four-year border stalemate. President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged in October last year to stabilize relations. Global uncertainty triggered by US President Donald Trump's upheaval of trade have also added to the urgency for the Asian neighbors to normalize ties. After the deadly border clashes in 2020, India increased legal scrutiny to discourage Chinese investments, banned thousands of mobile phone applications and curbed visas. The two sides agreed during the talks this week to speed up the process to restart direct flights and take 'practical' steps to facilitate visas, the MEA said in its statement Friday. Officials 'agreed to continue to stabilize and rebuild ties with priority on people-centric engagements,' the MEA said.

Grief, grace, and gratitude – in a time of tragedy
In this week of absolute tragedy, it is a moment for us to stand in solidarity with Air India. I am writing this in Vienna, sitting on the tarmac of the airport, where our Air India flight from Newark to New Delhi has been diverted, along with several others because of Israel's overnight strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities. The aviation challenge — seven Air India flights have been diverted to Vienna alone — has been necessitated because the Iran airspace is closed and the Pakistan airspace has been closed since Operation Sindoor. The aircraft needs more fuel for this unforecastable geopolitical development and a new flight path to take us home. Captain Sunil Simon, crew members Suresh, Khushboo, among others are all well beyond their duty hours. But no one has shown a single sign of irritability or strain. That this has happened hours after the horrific crash of London-bound Air India 171, less than a minute after take-off, makes this stellar professionalism even more remarkable. Imagine, operating in the traumatic overhang of losing your colleagues and friends to an air crash. Consider what the last few hours have been like for the airline staff to have to remain stoic, even smiling, in the immediate aftermath of a massive personal tragedy. And now this latest strain on their emotions and mental strength. Yet, how many of us will take a moment to appreciate the airline. If anything, it's something of a lazy habit for many Indians to take potshots at the airline, even while choosing it when flying elderly parents abroad, because they know fully well that western airlines will never offer that personal touch. The same people would not even whisper a protest in the face of borderline racism on some airlines. Think about the crash and the sweeping armchair commentary that followed in sections of social media. One publicity-seeker went from studio to studio cribbing about how the air conditioning had not worked well on the Delhi-Ahmedabad leg of the plane that crashed, making an absolutely inaccurate link to the tragedy. And he was allowed to do so. Others did not hesitate to make generalisations about the airline or the pilot in command. I am no aviation expert but the alacrity with which some sought to blame pilot Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and his co-pilot Captain Clive Kunder, was ghoulish and frankly, tone deaf and callous. We put a timer on the CCTV footage of the crash to show how Captain Sabharwal had only 33 seconds in which to make an intervention. On the CCTV footage you can see the plane take off smoothly and by the clock, half a minute later, it descends, erupting into an orange ball of fire on impact. Those who really understand aviation and planes point out that when you do not even have a whole minute to respond, Captain Sabharwal did the only thing he could. He made a Mayday distress call to the air traffic controller. In other crashes, where an engine has failed, because the plane is already cruising, the pilot has been able to bring it down, let's say on water or a safe patch. Here, the pilot was not able to lift the plane to a higher altitude; he clearly seemed to lose power immediately after take-off and he literally had no options. Think for a moment of that man at the helm of a split-second response before his life and the lives of the passengers at the back, literally went up in smoke. Think of how a universe can be upended in 32 seconds. And at least then, some of us might be less cavalier and casual in our commentary. Aerospace engineering expert Aditya Paranjape, a professor at Monash University, told me that 'prima facie... there is no human error. That the plane was able to take off smoothly shows the configurations entered by the pilots were accurate.' He believes, like many other experts I spoke with, that both engines appear to have failed, however rare that may be. While there may be questions about maintenance, surely there should be many sharp questions for Boeing, the manufacturer of the 787 Dreamliner that went down in Ahmedabad. Especially if the investigation reveals that both engines did, in fact, collapse on take-off. This would be the time to go back to the appearance of the Boeing CEO before a US Senate Panel. He actually admitted to 'serious safety missteps'. This hearing took place after the door of an Alaskan Airlines 737-Max blew out. Isn't he the one playing with lives? Shouldn't some of our contempt and anger be directed at corporate behemoths like Boeing? Over the years, there have been management issues with Air India. When the airline was government-owned (across parties) it was not able to unshackle itself from a sarkari subculture. When the ill-conceived and unplanned merger of Indian Airlines and Air India took place under the UPA government, the airline took a hit. And now that the Tatas have given Air India a new beginning, its staff — pilots and crew — should not be shackled by capitalist corporate norms. Not when it comes to a profession that literally can be about life and death. On the plane just now — we are still on the ground a few hours later — a huge round of applause went up when the Captain announced that the crew had agreed to work well beyond their stipulated shifts and in what is meant to be their rest period (with official dispensation) to try and get us all home. As families across India mourn — a father who lost both his daughters, a husband who came home with his wife's ashes, a couple who posted a last selfie only to go down with the plane — the rest of us should show humility, and some gratitude and grace. CM transfers Rs271cr to 62L welfare scheme beneficiaries

At the event, social welfare department secretary Bandana Preyashi welcomed the CMwith a green plant. Officials informed Kumar that the number of beneficiaries under the social security pension schemes has risen to 1,09,69,255 in the financial year 2024-25, a sharp increase from 12,25,106 in 2005-06. Of the total amount disbursed on Friday, Rs 254 crore was transferred to 61,29,548 beneficiaries under five major social security schemes, while Rs 16 crore was disbursed to 85,556 beneficiaries under the Mukhyamantri Kanya Utthan Yojana. The CM shared a detailed breakdown, saying that Rs 38 crore was transferred to 9,64,220 people under the Bihar Disability Pension Scheme and Rs 34 crore to 8,63,376 beneficiaries of the Laxmibai Social Security Pension Scheme. Under the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension Scheme, the Centre contributed Rs 89 crore for 35,59,667 beneficiaries while the state govt added Rs 61 crore.
