Daily commute turns buzzkill for Punekars' spirit

Time of India8 hours ago

Punekars witnessed a sunny morning on Wednesday after almost a week of cloudy and rainy weather. Besides being a mood-booster, the sun also partly dried the otherwise waterlogged roads, providing respite to daily commuters who have been battling potholes, knee-deep water on roads and traffic jams, especially during peak hours. Here's a look at the yearly havoc that the early monsoon has wreaked on Pune, which was ranked the fourth most congested city in the world by TomTom Index in 2024.

Owing to metro construction, most of the dividers along the route are closed, forcing people to take a detour, adding another 15-20 minutes to their commute. Rain worsens things — signals stop working, traffic builds up, and places like Ramwadi Metro Station are waterlogged due to poor drainage.

Rain uneven in Pune dist; moderate showers likely in city

1 2 3 Pune: The city and its surrounding areas experienced uneven rainfall distribution over the past 24 hours, with downpour in the Western Ghats and light showers in the central areas, IMD data released on Tuesday showed. Rainfall in Pune district varied significantly till 8.30am on Tuesday, with Kurvande receiving the highest quantum at 162mm, followed by Girivan (105mm) and Bhor (90mm). In contrast, city areas like Shivajinagar (18.1mm), Hadapsar (7.5mm) and Magarpatta (7mm) received much less rainfall. Talegaon, however, recorded 45.5mm rainfall, while Lavale 37mm, the IMD data showed. Other parts of the district remained relatively dry, with Baramati recording the lowest rainfall at 0.6mm. Bhor received only 8mm and Kurvande dropped to 4mm after earlier recording heavy rainfall. Central Pune areas experienced light showers, with Shivajinagar and Koregaon Park recording 0.9mm and 1mm, respectively. The pattern suggested that while the ghat areas experienced the monsoon's full force during the early morning hours, the rainfall tapered off significantly as the day progressed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cuối cùng, chơi miễn phí game chiến thuật hay nhất 2025! Tropical Storm Andrea tracker: First Atlantic storm of 2025 forms with 40 mph winds — Is this an early warning sign of a brutal hurricane season?

Tropical Storm Andrea becomes first named Atlantic storm of 2025, forecasters say it may not last long- Tropical Storm Andrea has become the first named system of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, forming far out in the Atlantic with 40 mph winds. Currently located about 1,200 miles west of the Azores, Andrea isn't a direct threat to the U.S. and is expected to weaken quickly — possibly dissipating by Wednesday. But its early formation is turning heads. Forecasters warn this could be just the beginning of a much more active and dangerous season. Could Andrea be a signal of what's to come? Experts say now's the time for Americans to pay attention, prepare, and stay informed as the tropics heat up. Where is Tropical Storm Andrea heading now? Tropical Storm Andrea is currently spinning far out in the Atlantic Ocean, traveling away from the U.S. mainland. The National Hurricane Center said the storm is moving east-northeast and will likely continue in that direction over the next day or so. Because of its remote location, Andrea does not currently pose any threat to the U.S. or Caribbean territories. Meteorologists say the storm's structure is relatively weak, and environmental conditions won't support long-term development. The NHC expects Andrea to start weakening by Tuesday night and disappear completely by Wednesday evening. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If you have a mouse, play this game for 1 minute Navy Quest Undo Also Read: Bitcoin price jumps above $106k as Trump's ceasefire boosts crypto rally and altcoins like Ethereum, Solana surge How strong is Tropical Storm Andrea right now? At its latest update, Andrea had maximum sustained winds of about 40 mph. Gusts could be higher, but no further intensification is expected. The storm does not currently meet the criteria to be classified as a hurricane. Its wind speeds are just at the threshold for a tropical storm designation. Live Events The system is traveling over open waters where cooler temperatures and increased wind shear are likely to disrupt its circulation. This is why experts say Andrea will likely be a short-lived storm. While Andrea itself may not bring severe weather to land, it signals that the Atlantic hurricane season is officially underway. The season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the most active period expected between mid-August and mid-October. The season typically peaks around September 10. According to NOAA and the National Hurricane Center, 97% of all tropical cyclone activity occurs within this official time window. The early formation of Andrea adds to concerns that the 2025 season could see higher-than-average storm activity. What are the Tropical Storm Andrea spaghetti models showing? Tropical Storm Andrea's projected path—often referred to through 'spaghetti models'—shows the storm drifting away from land into the open Atlantic. These models offer a range of forecast scenarios using various weather prediction systems. However, the National Hurricane Center relies on the top-performing models when issuing its official track and intensity forecasts. It's important to note that the 'cone of uncertainty' shown in these models only tracks the center of the storm. Impacts such as wind and rain can occur well outside this cone, but with Andrea expected to weaken quickly, little impact is expected at all. Is another tropical system forming in the Pacific? While Andrea remains the main story in the Atlantic, meteorologists are also watching a broad area of low pressure in the eastern Pacific Ocean, located a few hundred miles off the southern coast of Mexico. According to the National Hurricane Center, this system is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms, but environmental conditions look favorable for gradual development. The NHC gives this Pacific system a 70% chance of becoming a tropical depression over the next seven days. It's expected to move slowly in a west-northwestward direction, staying off the coast of Central America and southern Mexico. What should we expect for the rest of the season? The naming of Tropical Storm Andrea is a reminder that storm season is heating up. With forecasts pointing toward a hyperactive season, residents in hurricane-prone areas should begin preparing early. Even if the first storm of the year doesn't make landfall, future storms could be stronger and more dangerous. Experts advise keeping an emergency kit ready, staying informed through trusted weather sources, and following guidance from local emergency management officials. As conditions evolve, the National Hurricane Center will continue issuing advisories and updates. FAQs: Q1: What is Tropical Storm Andrea and where is it heading? Tropical Storm Andrea is the first named storm of 2025 and is moving away from land in the Atlantic Ocean. Q2: Is the eastern Pacific system turning into a storm? Yes, there's a 70% chance it could become a tropical depression near southern Mexico.

Climate crisis a major threat for makhana farmers: Report

Patna: Cooperative minister Prem Kumar on Tuesday released a report titled 'Climate change and makhana farmers of Bihar', shedding light on the severe challenges faced by makhana cultivators amid the escalating climate crisis. Speaking at the event, the minister said, "Makhana has now reached not just across India but around the world. In the makhana hubs of Madhubani and Darbhanga, the govt has formed 21 new cooperative societies. We are committed to ensuring that makhana cultivation and its farmers benefit. In districts like Kishanganj, Purnia, Saharsa, Katihar, Madhepura and Supaul, women have emerged as leaders of makhana companies. " The report was jointly prepared by Munna Jha of Asar Social Impact Advisors and Ishtiyaq Ahmad of Regenerative Bihar. It noted that despite growing international demand for makhana, traditional farmers remain vulnerable due to climate change, inconsistent govt policies and limited access to markets. IC Markets Start Now Undo Over the past decade, rainfall patterns have become increasingly erratic. "In 2024 alone, 40 rivers across Bihar dried up by March. With rising temperatures and uneven rainfall, a severe water shortage was observed in April-May across lowland wetlands," the report said. Mangal Anand Jha of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Madhubani, is quoted in the report as saying, "Makhana requires an ideal temperature of 20-35°C, humidity levels of 50-90%, and 1,000-2,500mm of annual rainfall. However, temperatures are now exceeding 40°C, humidity has dropped to 40-45% and rainfall has shrunk to an average of just 800 mm, affecting productivity." Ishtiyaq Ahmad, co-author of the report, added, "Makhana is a water-based crop, but our ponds have become polluted. Changing weather patterns and the lack of fresh water in rivers and ponds are shrinking the cultivation." Munna Jha, head of Climate Action for Bihar-Jharkhand at Asar Social Impact Advisors, clarified, "This is not a scientific study, but a social report created from direct engagement with farmers and experts. It draws from conversations with farmer groups in Madhubani, Darbhanga, Saharsa and Supaul districts. It documents their experiences, challenges and practical solutions."
