Through the years, McEntire has made several sweet comments about her relationship with BrandonReba McEntire's bond with Brandon Blackstock was special.
The 70-year-old country superstar was the former stepmother to the late talent manager from her previous marriage to ex Narvel Blackstock.
Brandon, who died of cancer this week at the age of 48, had a close bond with McEntire throughout his life.
'Brandon's been my son forever it seems,' McEntire told Entertainment Tonight in October 2021, years after her divorce from Narvel. 'Although he's my stepson, I still love him like he's my total — my blood.'
McEntire tied the knot with Narvel in 1989 and the former pair were married for 26 years before divorcing in 2015. The exes share son Shelby Blackstock, 35, as well as Narvel's three children — Brandon, Chassidy and Shawna — from his previous marriage to Elisa Gayle Ritter.
"I don't consider Brandon, Chassidy and Shawna [Blackstock] stepchildren," McEntire told The Boot in 2010. 'I claim them all.'
In December 2023, McEntire shared with PEOPLE that her joy comes in part from her kids and their well-being. "I'm at a really good place in my life," she said at the time. "I'm happy, I'm in love. My kids are all healthy. My family's healthy. So I'm happy."
Through the years, Clarkson and McEntire have also opened up about their connection through Brandon. In 2019, the 'Fancy' singer appeared as a guest on The Kelly Clarkson Show, where Clarkson said, 'I ended up marrying your oldest son and you got stuck with me more,' to which McEntire replied, 'Thank goodness, thank goodness.'
When Clarkson and Brandon announced their split in 2020, McEntire chose to stay out of the drama between her chosen son and her longtime friend.
'Kelly and I do talk, we text and I love them both, and so I can't play favorites because I've been a friend of Kelly for a long time," McEntire told ET in 2021.
For her part, Clarkson said there was no bad blood between her and McEntire in the wake of her tumultuous divorce from Brandon.
'No, not at all. No, I mean we were friends before Brandon and I even got together,' Clarkson said on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen in 2023. 'We text each other all the time. I think we're both women of sound mind that know that life doesn't work out sometimes. She would know best. Literally the same thing. So yeah, no hard feelings there. Just feelings.'
In March 2024, Brandon posed with his and Clarkson's kids River, 11, and Remington, 9, in photos at the Houston Rodeo, where the family enjoyed an outing with Brandon's brother Shelby and Shelby's mother, McEntire.
The Blackstock family shared the news of Brandon's death on Aug. 7 after privately living with cancer for three years.
"It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away," a rep for the family told PEOPLE in a statement. "Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family's privacy during this very difficult time."
Brandon's dad Narvel previously served as Clarkson's manager, and the singer and her future husband first met at a rehearsal for the Academy of Country Music Awards in May 2006, when Blackstock was still married to ex-wife Melissa Ashworth.

After their 2013 wedding, Brandon — who was also Blake Shelton's manager — became Clarkson's manager, too.
On Wednesday, Aug. 6, Clarkson revealed Brandon had been ill, and she postponed her Las Vegas residency to spend time with their children, River and Remington.
"While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children's father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them," she wrote in a statement, apologizing to fans and expressing appreciation for their "grace, kindness and understanding."

Why fans think Taylor Swift will be the next guest on 'New Heights'

Could we be getting new Taylor Swift music AND her first appearance on the 'New Heights' podcast? Is another era about to begin? Swifties were sent into a frenzy on Monday when the Instagram account for 'New Heights,' the podcast featuring Swift's boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce, and his brother, retired NFL star Jason Kelce, teased a major guest for its next episode. '92%ers, we're coming back early for a special episode with a VERY special guest,' the caption says. 'New episode Wednesday 7PM ET.' Jason Kelce also appears to be wearing Swift merchandise from the 'Eras Tour.' The middle of the graphic features a silhouette of a woman as the mystery guest. 'It's been a long time coming….' one fan commented. 'I would recognize the silhouette of those bangs from a mile away,' another wrote. 'Yall really know how to get the swifties riled up on a Monday morning,' another commented. Also on Aug. 11, Taylor Nation, a social media account affiliated with Swift's team, shared a post with a carousel of photos of Swift performing in orange outfits. The background of the 'New Heights' announcement is also orange. 'Thinking about when she said 'See you next era…' ❤️‍🔥,' the caption reads. Eagle-eyed fans remember that line from Swift's official 'Eras Tour' book, which serves as a retrospective of her massive 'Eras Tour' that concluded in December 2024. At the end of another Instagram video from Taylor Nation that month, the same words appear: 'See you next era...' Is Taylor Swift releasing new music? Fans took it as a sign that a new album is forthcoming. 'OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD IS THIS REALLY HAPPENING!??? 🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡,' another wrote. Fans also noted connections between the 'New Heights' and 'Taylor Nation' posts to speculate that Swift is going to officially announce the new album during an appearance on the podcast. 'This and the @newheightshow teaser with the orange sparkly background (when they're usually yellow) and jason wearing a midnights tay sweater and travis having 2 mics in front of him as if the guest is with him…. she's gonna announce it on the pod isn't she,' one fan commented. Dedicated Swifties, who know how much the singer enjoys puzzles and Easter eggs, dug even deeper into the symbolism of the posts. 'TN POSTED 12 MINUTES AFTER NEW HEIGHTS, the 12th word in new heights was capitalized, taylor nation posted 12 PICTURES WITH TAYLOR IN ALL ORANGE, talking about the next ERA, 2 days from now is the 13th (new heights episode) AND JASON IS WEARING TAYLOR MERCH,' one person wrote on X. The next original studio album Swift releases would be her twelfth. She has also released rerecorded versions of four of those albums. The new episode of 'New Heights' will be released on streaming services Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET, which is also a departure from the normal morning release.

Kelly Clarkson's Ex Brandon Blackstock Dead At 48 After Lengthy Cancer Battle

Kelly Clarkson's family emergency has turned into a family tragedy! The singer's former husband, and father of her kids, Brandon Blackstock, is now dead after a lengthy battle with cancer, barely 24 hours after Clarkson announced a cancellation of the remaining shows in her ongoing Las Vegas residency due to his illness. Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock were married from 2013 to 2020 before going their separate ways. They were parents to two children, River Rose and Remington Alexander, during the nearly seven-year union. Kelly Clarkson's Ex Brandon Blackstock Battled Cancer For 'More Than 3 Years' A representative from the Blackstock family confirmed that the singer's former husband and manager succumbed to his cancer fight today, Thursday, August 7, 2025. He was reportedly surrounded by his family and loved ones after fighting the deadly illness for over three years. Clarkson broke her silence on the manager's illness just yesterday when she informed fans about her decision to reschedule the rest of the shows to be by his side and their kids. In addition to his children from the marriage to Clarkson, the late Blackstock is also father to two kids, Savannah and Seth, from a previous marriage. His eldest child, Savannah, gave birth to his first grandchild in 2022. The singer and her late husband met for the first time at a rehearsal for the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2006 while he was married to his ex, Melissa Ashworth, per PEOPLE. Inside The Performer's Series Of Show Cancellations Due To Ex's Illness Before her announcement on Instagram yesterday, where she profusely apologized for rescheduling yet another set of shows for her Vegas residency, the star had also taken a step back from her talk show for an extended period. As reported by the outlet, the performer was absent from several episodes of "The Kelly Clarkson Show" earlier in the year, reportedly due to her husband's sickness. While the singer vacated the host seat for the show, her colleagues, including Roy Wood Jr, Simu Liu, Wanda Skyes, Josh Groban, and Brooke Shields, filled in as guest hosts. As soon as the media personality returned, she marked the program's 1,000th episode, which featured celebrities like Tyler Perry, Alicia Vikander, and popular Venezuelan actor, Mauy Ricky. The star also had to shift both opening dates of her Vegas residency forward in early July to prevent her vocal cords from suffering further trauma as the rehearsals took a toll on her voice. The shows have reportedly now been postponed to July and August 2026, planned to take place at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The Former Couple's Romantic Journey Sparks flew in Clarkson's heart when she set eyes on the music manager for the first time, as she later admitted in an interview in 2013 that when he walked past her, making everybody laugh, she knew they were meant for each other. "Literally, I'm not joking, he walked past us at that time. And he walked by, I was ready to take it all off. I just felt something," she said of their first meeting in a 2017 interview, where she explained that her guitar player's wife was her date for the night. Their relationship finally became official in 2012, after Clarkson performed the national anthem at a game with Blackstock in attendance. The pair went on their first date in February 2012, and by the end of the year, they were engaged to be married. The intimate proposal happened at their Nashville home, shortly after Clarkson praised him for loving her properly in a way no one had ever done. The Duo Shared A Productive Professional Relationship While they were married, the singer credited her husband for a chunk of her career growth, including the birth of her talk show, which was his brilliant idea. She confessed in 2019 that working on the idea he pitched brought them together in completely new ways. She reflected on how they share a similar temperament and also navigate their dynamics as spouses at work. Clarkson praised her husband for his great work ethic and commitment to getting the best out of anything. Blackstock became Clarkson's manager after their wedding, a decision the singer took after seeing how he treated Blake Shelton, whom he managed at the time Clarkson met him. "And the way that [Blake's] career has blown up, I would have hired Brandon regardless. He's really talented at what he does, and his mind really does work in a completely different way," Clarkson shared. Inside Kelly Clarkson And Brandon Blackstock's Bitter Divorce By 2020, things had gone awry between the couple during the time in quarantine on their Montana ranch. Their time together failed to salvage their marriage, which was already experiencing tension. A source had shared at the time that they were hoping the time away from their time away from Los Angeles was what their marriage needed. The Blast reported that the reverse was the case as soon as Clarkson returned to L.A., she beelined it to court to file for divorce. The star demanded joint custody of their two kids and asked for an enforcement of their prenuptial agreement, which specified how to handle their community assets and finances. May Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock's family find strength to navigate these trying times.
