Kuwait Club and Al-Arabi finalize preparations for Zain Premier League title decider

Arab Times08-05-2025
KUWAIT CITY, May 8: Kuwait Club and Al-Arabi will wrap up their preparations for the decisive clash scheduled for Sunday in the fifth and final round of the Zain Premier League championship group.
Both sides are vying for the coveted league title. Kuwait Club currently leads the standings with 57 points and requires just one point to be crowned champion for the fourth consecutive year and the 20th time in its history. Meanwhile, Al-Arabi, sitting on 55 points, must secure a win to claim the title for the 18th time in club history.
The two sides have faced off twice this season in the league — Kuwait Club won the first encounter 2-0, while the second ended in a goalless draw.
The fourth round wrapped up with a single match between Salmiya and Fahaheel at Jaber Al-Mubarak Stadium, ending in a 1-1 draw.
Salmiya now holds fourth place with 32 points, just ahead of Fahaheel, which sits fifth with 31 points.
In Sunday's final round, Salmiya will face Al-Tadamon (6th place, 20 points), while Fahaheel will go up against Al-Qadsiya, who have locked in third place with 38 points.
Fahaheel's Syrian coach, Firas Al-Khatib, expressed disappointment over missed chances, stating, 'The waste of easy opportunities continues.' He commended his players for their determination and strong desire to clinch fourth place, emphasizing that the team still has a real chance to achieve that goal. Al-Khatib also praised Salmiya goalkeeper Yousef Al-Kandari for his exceptional performance.
Tomorrow also marks the final round of the relegation group, with Khaitan and Yarmouk set to bid farewell to the Zain Premier League. The two sides will face off at 7:10 PM at Al-Sadalaqa and Al-Salam Stadiums.
Meanwhile, Kazma (20 points) and Al-Nasr (18 points), both of whom have already secured their place in next season's Premier League, will clash at Abdullah Al-Khalifa Stadium.

Liverpool spend big to hold off Arsenal, Man City in Premier League title fight

Arsenal longing for their first title in 22 years LIVERPOOL: Liverpool have splashed out to defend their Premier League title as champions but face stiff competition from an Arsenal side desperate to shake off their tag as nearly men and a rejuvenated Manchester City. After storming to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title in Arne Slot's first season in charge, Liverpool have looked to build from a position of strength during a summer marked by tragedy. Portuguese forward Diogo Jota was killed in a car accident alongside his brother last month, plunging the club into mourning. Tributes to Jota will continue throughout the season with 'Forever 20'—his shirt number, which the club have now retired—printed on Liverpool's jerseys. The Reds have already spent £260 million ($350 million) on Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong. However, after the departures of Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, they are not yet done in strengthening their forward line and are expected to launch a fresh bid for Alexander Isak, with Newcastle demanding a British transfer record fee for the Swedish striker. Liverpool's rivals will hope Wirtz and Ekitike take time to adapt to the rigors of the Premier League after shining in Germany's Bundesliga, while there are defensive doubts for Slot's men to answer. The Dutch coach said his side need to defend better after leaky performances in pre-season were followed by defeat in the Community Shield to Crystal Palace on Sunday after twice blowing the lead. Can Gyokeres fire? After finishing second for the past three seasons, Arsenal are longing for their first title in 22 years and have backed Mikel Arteta with another near £200 million investment in the transfer market. Spanish international Martin Zubimendi will be the new anchor of the midfield, while the signings of Christian Norgaard, Cristhian Mosquera, Noni Madueke and Kepa Arrizabalaga add depth to the squad. But Arsenal's season is likely to be defined by whether Viktor Gyokeres proves to be the answer to their need for a prolific striker. The Swede struck 97 times in 102 games during two years at Sporting Lisbon, but the 27-year-old failed to make a breakthrough in the Premier League during his previous experience in England. After coming up short at Brighton, Gyokeres scored 41 goals in 121 games in England's second tier with Coventry and Swansea. 'He's a player that, when you leave him with the space one against one, he's going to destroy you,' said Arteta of his new striker. City were dethroned last season after an unprecedented run of four consecutive titles as the wheels came off for Pep Guardiola's men without Ballon d'Or winner Rodri. The Spaniard has been ruled out till September due to a setback in his return from a serious knee injury, but City have refreshed their squad with the additions of Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki. After a first trophyless season since 2016/17, City expect to be back in the fight for the title. World champions Chelsea Chelsea were the last side other than City and Liverpool to lift the title back in 2017 and showed they are a coming force once more by winning the Club World Cup in the US last month. The Blues finished fourth, 15 points behind Liverpool last season, but their transfer policy of investing heavily in scores of young prospects is beginning to bear fruit. Joao Pedro made an instant impact with three goals in three games at the Club World Cup after a £55 million move from Brighton and could solve Chelsea's need for a world class goalscorer. Manchester United have transformed their forward line with the signings of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo after finishing 15th last season. Beating United in the Europa League final was not enough for Ange Postecoglou to keep his job as Tottenham manager and former Brentford boss Thomas Frank has taken over in north London. Promoted trio Leeds, Sunderland and Burnley are aiming to avoid a worrying trend for the competitive balance. For the past two seasons all three promoted clubs have gone straight back down as the gap between the riches of the Premier League and the second tier continues to grow.—AFP

Qadsia kicks off Gulf Club Champions League campaign against Zakho

Meanwhile, Group B features Qatar's Al Rayyan, Saudi Arabia's Al Shabab, Oman's Al Nahda, and Yemen's Tadamon Hadramout. The draw ceremony was held at the headquarters of the Gulf Football Federation in Doha, Qatar. The tournament will follow a home-and-away format and run from September 16, 2025, to April 14, 2026. Qadsia is set to kick off its campaign on April 16 against Zakho. After narrowly missing out on the title last year—drawing 1-1 with Iraq's Duhok in the first leg before losing 1-2 in the second—Qadsia is determined to claim the championship this season. Qadsia continues its preparations at a training camp in Turkey ahead of the new season. Tonight, it will play its second friendly match against Saudi Arabia's Al-Faisaly, followed by a game against the UAE's Al-Ittihad on August 19. Two additional friendlies are being arranged before the camp concludes on August 29. The team began its preseason with a narrow 0-1 loss to Saudi Arabia's Al-Akhdood. Under the guidance of Tunisian coach Nabil Maaloul, Qadsia is focusing on intensive morning and evening training sessions as they prepare for their Zain Premier League opener against Al-Nasr on September 12.

Brazil's Schwanke brings championship pedigree to Kuwait Club volleyball team

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 11: Kuwait Club has announced the appointment of Brazilian coach Carlos Schwanke to lead its first volleyball team for the upcoming 2025-2026 season. Schwanke takes over from his compatriot Talmo Oliveira, who has moved to Saudi Arabia to coach Al-Ula Club. Schwanke boasts an extensive and accomplished coaching career. In 2021, he guided the Brazilian national team to victory in the World League. His résumé also includes stints with the Bahraini national team, Kulaib Club, and Al-Rayyan Club of Qatar. Notably, he led Egypt's Zamalek SC to win the 43rd Arab Men's Volleyball Clubs Championship in Doha, defeating fellow Egyptian side Al-Ahly 3-0 in the final. To strengthen the squad, Kuwait Club has signed two new foreign professionals: Estonian Oliver Finn, formerly of Al-Rayyan, and Canadian star Nicholas Hoag, captain of Qatar's Al-Arabi Club. The team has also renewed contracts with key local players Abdullah Jassim, Abdulrahman Al-Otaibi, Amer Al-Saleem, and Abdullah Bouftin, while adding Kuwaiti Al-Arabi player Abdullah Al-Muwaine to the roster. Preparations for the new season began with a week of gym sessions and fitness training. Ball training will start next week, running alongside continued conditioning work until Coach Schwanke arrives. Kuwait Club is expected to hold an overseas training camp ahead of the new season, which will kick off with the Federation Championship in mid-September. The volleyball season will conclude in May 2026.
