Ranga Reddy dist consumer panel handled over 2k housing related plaints
Hyderabad: If there is one thing Ranga Reddy residents are no longer willing to compromise on, it is accountability in housing. As Telangana's real estate expands rapidly into its suburbs, the Ranga Reddy district consumer disputes redressal commission is seeing more and more housing-related grievances being filed. Since its inception in 1998, the forum has handled as many as 2,426 consumer complaints related to housing, more than any other consumer forum in the city. Speaking to TOI, Ch Latha Kumari, president of the Ranga Reddy consumer commission, explained that this trend is closely tied to the district's location and pace of development. "Our jurisdiction covers Ranga Reddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri, and Vikarabad, three districts that are now real estate hotspots. With a large number of new and ongoing housing ventures here, it is natural that we receive a high volume of grievances related to housing," she said. A senior official at the commission noted that four out of every ten cases filed with them fall under the housing category. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 11 Harry Potter Actors Who Grew Up Stunningly. The Latest Article Undo A recent case involved a homebuyer who paid Rs 35.8 lakh for a flat in a real estate venture in Ameenpur. The buyer signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2021, but the builder failed to begin construction, execute the sale deed, or allot car parking. The commission ruled in favour of the complainant, ordering the company to refund the full amount with 9% annual interest. In another matter, a dance teacher from Hyderabad approached a real estate firm she found through social media advertisements for designing and constructing her ground and first floors. Though the total project cost was Rs 27 lakh, the firm carried out work worth only Rs 13 lakh before abandoning the project. The commission viewed this as a case of deficiency in service and unfair trade practice, ordering the firm to return the remaining amount with interest and pay Rs 15,000 towards compensation and legal expenses. Another complaint came from a woman who bought a house in Ahmedguda for Rs 15 lakh. Within a short time after taking possession, she discovered multiple defects in the property, ranging from faulty plumbing and wiring to broken tiles, poor finishing, and water seepage. Despite repeated calls and a legal notice, the builder failed to respond or make repairs. An independent evaluation pegged the rectification costs at Rs 3.8 lakh. The commission held the builder liable and directed him to pay the full repair costs along with Rs 10,000 for mental agony and litigation charges. With over 2,300 cases already resolved, Kumari said the rising numbers reflect not just the pace of construction in these districts but also a growing legal awareness among homebuyers. "We see a variety of disputes, typically involving amounts between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 50 lakh. But what is encouraging is that more and more people are standing up for their rights," she said. ‘Farm-to-kitchen' drive in Kalamassery from August 17
KOCHI: In a significant move aimed at achieving food self-sufficiency, the Kalamassery constituency is set to implement an innovative 'farm-to-kitchen' initiative from August 17 (Chingam 1) to directly deliver fresh produce to consumers, Industries Minister P Rajeeve said on Tuesday. The plan, initiated under the auspices of the Muppathadam Service Cooperative Bank, is designed to create a seamless supply chain from the farm to the consumer's kitchen. 'Air-conditioned vehicles will be used to transport vegetables directly to major centres, including residential areas, flats, universities and government offices at a fixed time each day. This systematic delivery model is expected to provide local farmers with a stable market and consumers with fresh, high-quality produce,' Rajeeve said. To further support the initiative, he also announced establishment of a new food processing park by KINFRA on 37.5 acres in Kunnukara. This facility will be used to create value-added products, ensuring that all produce is utilised efficiently. Furthermore, a crucial safety net for farmers has been introduced: a partnership with Flipkart will ensure that products are procured at a floor price. The project's ultimate goal is to transform Kalamassery into an agriculturally self-sufficient constituency, thereby achieving food sovereignty. As part of the collaborative effort, a constituency-level sub-committee of vegetable and small grain farmers has been formed to oversee production and marketing. Varghese Pollayil was elected as the convener of the new sub-committee.
