Miami Heat become the first 10th place team to advance out of the NBA's play-in tournament as playoff field is set
The Miami Heat, who were the last team into the Easter Conference play-in bracket with the 10th-best record in the regular season, knocked off the Atlanta Hawks with a 123-114 overtime win to become the No. 8 seed in the East.
In the Western Conference, it was the Memphis Grizzlies pummeling the Dallas Mavericks 120-106 to take the eighth seed in the West.
In the first game of the night the Heat rolled into looking for a second straight do-or-die win after defeating the Bulls in Chicago on Wednesday in their first play-in game.
The Heat caught the Hawks flat-footed, leading by as much as 17 points in the first half.
The Hawks shook off a poor shooting performance early in the game and rallied to take the lead in the fourth quarter, sparked by some clutch shooting from guard Trae Young. It was a driving lay-up from Young that tied the game at 106 with just a second left on the clock to force overtime.
Heat reserve guard Davion Mitchell took over in the added period with a trio of 3-pointers to outscore the Hawks single-handedly in overtime. Mitchell scored nine of his 16 points in OT.
The Heat's Tyler Herro led all scorers with a game-high 30 points, while Young had a team-high 29 points for Atlanta.
With the win, the Heat slide into the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference and become the first 10th place team to ever advance out of the play-in tournament. Miami will now face the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers in a first round series beginning Sunday.
In Friday's nightcap, the Grizzlies were not about about to let Dallas become the second 10th place team to advance, as Memphis dealt the Mavericks a decisive defeat.
The Grizzlies pounced all over the Mavs early, walloping Dallas from the opening tip to establish a 39-24 lead after the first quarter.
Memphis continued to pour it on in the second quarter, running their lead up to as many as 25 points. The Grizzlies would coast from there.
With star guard Ja Morant playing on an injured right ankle after rolling it in Grizzlies' loss to the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday, Memphis was lifted by an all-around team effort on Friday.
All of the Grizzlies' starters scored in double figures, led by Jaren Jackson Jr.'s 24 points. Morant scored 22 for Memphis.
The Mavericks, on the other hand, were more or less a one-man band. Anthony Davis, who joined Dallas as part of the much-scrutinized trade with the Los Angeles Lakers involving Luka Dončić, scored a game-high 40 points.
The next highest scorer for Dallas was Klay Thompson with 18, and two of the Mavericks' starters – PJ Washington and Dereck Lively II – didn't score at all.
It was a lackluster ending to a disappointing season for the Mavericks, who entered the season with championship dreams fueled by the presence of their MVP-candidate Dončić. But the surprising mid-season decision to trade the Slovenian superstar coupled with a slew of key injuries, including to star guard Kyrie Irving, ultimately derailed any title aspirations Dallas might have had.
With their win, the Grizzlies earn the final spot in the Western Conference and a showdown with the No. 1 seed Oklahoma City Thunder, owners of the NBA's best record during the regular season. That series will begin Sunday.
First round playoff action begins Saturday with the NBA Finals scheduled to tip off on June 5.

Two Cooper Rush positives most hope won't be seen in important games
Despite what we have seen with our own eyes, it feels time for some positive Cooper Rush discussion. Older sports fans like discussing the good old days. That's why you'll often hear that new NBA stars wouldn't have survived in the '90s era. That's why two of the most popular figures in Baltimore Ravens history are a linebacker and a safety, and that also explains why, even in jest, old football jargon is thrown around for the sake of making jokes or driving a point home. Fans of Lamar Jackson may find this hard to believe, but there was once an old saying that 'the most popular player on a team is the backup quarterback.' Do you see what we mean? That isn't true in Baltimore, and that probably isn't true in most of the AFC North towns either, except for Cleveland. The Browns have named former Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco as the full-time starter. Lamar Jackson hasn't thrown a single pass during the preseason, nor should he. The two-time MVP is much too valuable to trot out in a real game and risk an injury. Cooper Rush is the next man up. He didn't play long during the first preseason game vs. the Indianapolis Colts. Sadly, one of his four pass attempts landed in the hands of a man wearing the wrong colored jersey. He was a little better in the second contest, sort of. That one doubled as his mini-revenge game vs. the Dallas Cowboys. Sure, he only raised the 20.8 rating to a less-than-stellar 68.5, and he doubled his interception total from one in game one to a pair of miscues in the second. Sure, one of those interceptions in Arlington was a nasty pick six, but hold those chins up. Here's an offer of some Cooper Rush positivity. Two positive Cooper Rush traits the Ravens would rather not see in meaningful action Raise those glasses, and toast with us. Hopefully, they're full of soda or something tame like Kool-Aid, but here's to a healthy season for Lamar Jackson. Here's to Cooper Rush being a better quarterback than he has shown us in two preseason appearances with the Ravens. Dark clouds often have silver linings. Little rain is expected to fall during Baltimore's possible march to a third Lombardi Trophy, but we'd rather you not be fearful of what may happen if, Heaven forbid, Lamar Jackson gets nicked up and misses a game or two. Cooper Rush has some positive traits. We'd rather not see them in meaningful games, but you can rest assured that those traits are there if he's needed to sub in and win in Jackson's absence. They say sometimes a short memory is a good thing to have if you're a quarterback. Rush didn't play much in the preseason opener, but after a rocky start and spotting the Cowboys six points, he settled in, helping lead the Ravens to 16 points on offense by way of four first-half scoring drives. That isn't exactly setting the world on fire vs. the Cowboys' backups and reserves, but remember, Baltimore was playing their backups too. It's hard to imagine him being less efficient if he has Derrick Henry, Zay Flowers, Rashod Bateman, and others at his disposal while leading this offense. If Eric DeCosta, the Ravens' scouting staff, John Harbaugh, and Todd Monken weren't in on Cooper Rush collectively, then trust us on this. He wouldn't be here. He wouldn't be part of this team. Rush wasn't signed because Baltimore needed him to start. They don't need him to be a carbon copy of Lamar Jackson. He's here primarily for what he offers Jackson and company in the QB meeting room. There's no sense in lying. He didn't look good vs. the Colts. He also got off to a rocky start vs. the Cowboys, but he can win games. Remember, this is the same guy who etched out a 9-5 record as a starter in Dallas when, more often than not, everything was working against him. That ought to count for something.

A'ja Wilson is a chaos agent in the 2025 WNBA MVP race
Las Vegas Aces forward A'ja Wilson could pull off a photo finish upset in the 2025 WNBA MVP race. For months, Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier has been arguably the best player in the league. Collier came out of the gates with intensity and helped Minnesota establish the best record in the WNBA (28-6), including winning nine straight games to open the season. The Aces? Not so much. Their slow start to the season and 11 losses before the All-Star break did them little favors. Not to mention, Wilson also had a rough start and missed several games with injuries. However, now it's Collier who's out with an injury, and her absence has left the door open for other players to creep into the MVP conversation. WNBA PLAYOFF PICTURE 2025: 6 spicy storylines as postseason nears What helps a player get MVP consideration? Averaging a double-double and ranking second in the WNBA in points per game, rebounds per game and blocks per game. Wilson also has eight matchups where she scored 30 or more points this season, including 32 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks and four assists against the Atlanta Dream Tuesday night. Not impressed? What about averaging 26.9 points, 13.1 rebounds, 1.6 steals and 1.9 blocks during the Aces' league-leading eight-game win streak? Wilson hasn't just entered the chat; she's become a full-on chaos agent in the MVP race. There's still a great chance that Collier wins the MVP race, but Wilson is causing enough commotion right now to make voters think twice about who should be MVP. If Wilson continues on her current incredible tear and Las Vegas climbs into the top-three spots in the league standings ― As of this publishing, the Aces are fifth ― she could win her *checks notes* fourth MVP award, the most in WNBA history. Don't sleep on A'ja Wilson.

Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson begin to show what's possible with Bears
The Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson era couldn't have gotten off to a better start. Yes, it was only preseason. Still, Caleb Williams had one of the better drives we have seen from him as an NFL quarterback. Caleb did a lot of things he struggled with in his rookie season and looked like a completely different player. It is always hard to predict how things will go after seeing preseason action, especially given that the Buffalo Bills were not playing their starters against the Chicago Bears, but seeing a glimpse of how efficient and dangerous this Bears offense can be has to get Chicago fans excited. Brendan Sugrue with Bears Wire gave his thoughts on the early success of Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams: "Williams and the starting offense opened things up with an impressive touchdown drive where he went 5-of-6 for 97 yards. He was accurate and poised, delivering the ball quickly to tight ends Colston Loveland and Cole Kmet while firing a dart to Olamide Zaccheaus for the touchdown. His lone miss was on a play where he was pressured to his right and had to make an off-balance throw to Zaccheaus that came a play before they connected for a touchdown. "All in all, Williams finished the day going 6-of-10 for 107 yards and a touchdown with a passer rating of 130.0. Williams is starting with his left foot forward, a change from last year. His base looks improved from his rookie season as well, something that wasn't always consistent. The best news, however, may be that Williams didn't take a single sack in either series after he took 68 in 2024. There is a long way to go, but the unofficial start to the Williams and Johnson partnership could not have gone much better than it did on Sunday night." Caleb Williams had the fourth highest PFF grade among all quarterbacks in Week 2 of the NFL preseason. He ultimately was one of the biggest winners from this week. All of the offseason banter that painted Caleb Williams in a negative light seems to be simmering down after Sunday night's performance. Given how creative and efficient Ben Johnson's offense is, a consistently excellent Caleb Williams will make the Bears very dangerous in the NFC. We will see Caleb Williams have an MVP-level season. In that sole drive Caleb Williams not only looked like Jared Goff, but he also looked a lot like number 13 for the USC Trojans a couple seasons ago. Getting Caleb Williams to make plays on time and be the player who was drafted No. 1 will take this Bears team to new heights this season.
