Libya detains 1,500 undocumented migrant workers, mostly Egyptians, in raid near Tripoli - Region

Al-Ahram Weekly26-07-2025
Libyan authorities detained on Saturday some 1,500 undocumented migrant workers in a raid on a neighbourhood housing them east of the capital Tripoli, an AFP reporter saw.
"Saturday's inspections uncovered housing units where undocumented foreign workers were living," Libyan labour minister Ali al-Abed, who was present during the raid, told reporters.
"These workers, of various nationalities, had no residency permits, no official passports, and not even health records."
Libya has been gripped by conflict since the 2011 overthrow and killing of longtime ruler Moamer Kadhafi in a NATO-backed uprising.
The country remains split between Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dbeibah's government based in Tripoli and a rival administration based in the east.
With Italy some 300 kilometres (186 miles) away, Libya has become a key launchpad for tens of thousands of migrants who risk their lives at sea trying to reach Europe.
The area targeted in the sweep east of Tripoli housed makeshift encampments surrounded by high walls and a large gate.
Hundreds of migrants -- mostly Egyptians and sub-Saharan Africans -- were said to have lived there.
Inside the compound, an AFP journalist saw a small grocery store, a butcher shop and vegetable vendors.
The labour minister said the site had "unregulated housing that fails to meet basic requirements for decent accommodation, health and workplace safety".
The detained migrant workers will be "transferred to centres run by the Anti-Illegal Immigration Authority, and legal proceedings will be initiated against them according to national regulations", Abed said.
It remained unclear whether the migrants would be immediately deported.
Earlier this month, a European Union commissioner and ministers from Greece, Italy and Malta were in Libya to discuss irregular migration from the North African country.
Migrants intercepted by Libyan authorities, including in international waters before reaching the Italian coast, are forcibly returned to Libya and held in detention under harsh conditions frequently condemned by the United Nations.

Brazilian President Attacks Trump Over Tariffs: Acting Authoritarian

Amir haggag Brazilian President Lula da Silva launched a sharp attack on his US counterpart, Donald Trump, criticizing the US's imposition of 50% tariffs on Brazilian products. Lula considered the move a disguised political attack that threatens his country's sovereignty, accusing Trump of acting authoritarian and anti-civilized. "I respect everyone, and I demand respect for myself," da Silva said, completely ruling out the possibility of direct contact with Trump. Da Silva also attacked former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and his son Eduardo, accusing them of encouraging Washington to impose sanctions. He considered this an unprecedented betrayal, demanding that they be prosecuted for "incitement to harm national interests." read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Trump Announces New Sanctions on Russian Oil Buyers, 100% Tariff on Chip Imports

Ahmed Emam U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that his administration will impose "additional sanctions" on countries that continue to purchase oil from Russia, signaling a significant escalation in Washington's efforts to curtail Moscow's energy revenues. According to Alqahera News, Trump warned that any nation buying Russian oil would face "increased economic consequences" under new U.S. sanctions being prepared by his administration. The move is part of a broader strategy to isolate Russia and limit its ability to finance its military operations. In a separate policy announcement, President Trump declared his intention to introduce a 100% tariff on imported semiconductor chips in an effort to stimulate local manufacturing and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. 'We are bringing chip manufacturing back to the United States,' Trump said, according to the report. 'This is about protecting American jobs, our economy, and our national security.' The proposed tariff is expected to have wide-ranging implications for the global tech industry, particularly for countries that export large volumes of microchips to the U.S., such as Taiwan, South Korea, and China. The announcements reflect President Trump's continued focus on economic nationalism and strategic decoupling from geopolitical rivals, as his administration doubles down on trade and energy-related pressure tactics. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
