Arsenal close to agreeing new long-term contract with Gabriel

New York Times2 days ago

Arsenal defender Gabriel is close to agreeing a new long-term contract with the club.
Sporting director Andrea Berta made talks with the centre-back's camp a priority shortly after starting his role at Arsenal in March. Those negotiations are now approaching a successful conclusion.
Securing Gabriel's future will be a significant statement from Arsenal at the outset of a summer in which Berta has a considerable amount of business to attend to.

Gabriel signed his existing deal in October 2022 and it expires in 2027.
The Brazilian has been a mainstay at the Emirates Stadium since joining from French side Lille in 2020. He has made 210 appearances for the club, scoring 20 goals, and has forged a strong centre-back partnership with William Saliba.
The 27-year-old has been sidelined since April after sustaining a hamstring injury that required surgery and ruled him out for the rest of the season. Arsenal said that the aim is for him to be ready for the start of the 2025-26 campaign.
He made 42 appearances for Arsenal this season as he helped the side finish second in the Premier League, with manager Mikel Arteta describing him in April as the club's 'best defender'.
Gabriel began his career at Brazilian side Avai and moved to Lille in 2017. He made 52 appearances for the club and had loan spells at Troyes and Dinamo Zagreb before joining Arsenal.
Arsenal also opened talks with Saliba over a new contract earlier this month to end speculation around his future, with Real Madrid targeting the 24-year-old. Berta has held discussions with Saliba's camp to extend his stay.
Saliba, alongside Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli, signed a new contract in 2023 which saw his deal extended to the summer of 2027.
Analysis by James McNicholas
While there is inevitable focus on Arsenal's transfer activity this summer, there are also some vital contract negotiations for sporting director Andrea Berta to tackle.
A number of key players have deals that expire in the summer of 2027 — as well as Gabriel, that's also the expiry date for William Saliba and Bukayo Saka.
An agreement with Gabriel would be an important step in the right direction, and a signifier that as well as strengthening the squad, Arsenal are eager to retain their best players.

Derry suffer third successive Christy Ring Final defeat

Derry suffered a third successive Christy Ring Cup Final defeat as they were beaten 1-27 to 1-24 by London at Croke Park. The Oak Leafers lost their previous two deciders against Kildare and Meath, and this year's three-point loss means their painful wait for a first Christy Ring Cup goes on. Advertisement London's narrow victory helped them to end their 13-year wait to lift the trophy and promotion to the Joe McDonagh Cup next year. The two sides had traded five points each before David Devine fired home a goal for London on 11 minutes. Derry responded through Thomas Brady's fantastic long-range strike which drew them level once again. London kept tagging on points and lead 1-15 to 1-12 at half-time courtesy of a few late points from Devine and Dylan Dawson. Derry rallied and managed to close the gap by the 51st minute, but Neil Rogers' men re-established their advantage through Conor O'Carroll, Dawson and Jack Morrisey as London saw out the victory. Cavan, meanwhile, were back in the final for the first time since losing the decider against Fermanagh in 2021 but struggled and they trailed 3-11 to 0-13 at half-time against a ruthless New York side. Tomas O'Connor, AJ Willis and Dara Walsh all found the net whilst Adam Loughlin Stones and David Mangan racked up eight points between them to give the Exiles a comfortable lead at the break. Mangan scored their fourth goal after the break from the penalty spot and they continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over, leading 4-14 to 0-15 at one stage in the second half. Liam Delap names surprise defender as toughest opponent - 'Everyone says Van Dijk'

Ipswich striker Liam Delap named Nottingham Forest center-back Murillo as the toughest center-back he has faced in his career. The 22-year-old, who has been mentioned as a possible summer target for Liverpool, has come up against Murillo twice this season, failing to score or assist in either of Ipswich's games against Forest. Advertisement Delap was asked to choose between Ruben Dias, William Saliba, Murillo and Van Dijk for the toughest center-back he has faced, and although he mentioned Van Dijk — who Delap also drew a blank against in two games this season — he ultimately plumped for Murillo, who has also been linked with the Reds. "I think everyone says Van Dijk and he's probably been one of the best centre-backs in the world," Delap told Sky Sports. "When I went and played against Murillo, I was really impressed with him. He's still young and he's so fast and strong. I really like what I've seen from him this season. I don't watch too much football or anything but I don't want to go with what everyone else says." A $40 million buyout clause in Delap's Ipswich contract became active once the Suffolk club's relegation from the Premier League was confirmed, and it is expected that there will be plenty of interest in the former Manchester City player this summer. Delap has scored 12 Premier League goals for Ipswich despite the team's struggles and there is little chance of him remaining at Portman Road next term. The Reds are interested in signing a new striker this summer, although it remains to be seen whether they plan to firm up any interest in Delap. Advertisement Arne Slot has relied on his wide players for many of Liverpool's goals, with Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez having managed just 11 Premier League goals between them. The anticipated sale of Nunez will help to raise funds for a new striker, with Liverpool expecting there to be a strong market for the Uruguayan after rejecting approaches from clubs in Saudi Arabia during the winter window. Murillo has been a top player for Nottingham Forest this season -Credit:MI News/NurPhoto One of the offers, from Al-Hilal, was reported to have been worth $93 million, and if the club can command a similar fee this summer, it could go some way to ensuring the Reds can replace Nunez with a top-class striker. Newcastle's Alexander Isak would be Liverpool's preferred target but he is likely to prove too expensive, while the Reds have also been linked with the likes of Julian Alvarez, Viktor Gyokeres, and Benjamin Sesko of Atletico Madrid, Sporting CP, and RB Leipzig respectively.
