NFA to ship 35,000 bags of rice to Cebu for P20/kilo program

GMA Network2 days ago

The National Food Authority (NFA) is set to ship some 35,000 bags of rice from San Jose, Oriental Mindoro to Cebu, where they will be sold for P20 per kilogram, as part of the pilot implementation of the government's program aimed to lower prices of rice in the country.
According to the Department of Agriculture (DA), the latest shipment is part of the 100,000 50-kilo sacks ordered by Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia for distribution in the province. The first batch of 35,000 bags arrived three weeks ago.
'(T)his effort is about more than just bringing down prices — it is about recognizing and supporting the people who make it possible,' Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., who also chairs the NFA Council, said in a statement.
'By clearing space in our NFA warehouses, we are making room to buy more palay from you, our beloved farmers. Here in Mindoro, a vital rice-producing province in Southern Tagalog, you deserve not just recognition, but fair prices that truly reflect your hard work and sacrifice,' he added.
The NFA buys fresh palay or unmilled rice from farmers at P18 per kilo, and up to P24 per kilo for dry palay. This compares with the P13.50 to P18.00 per kilo buying price of private traders, against an estimated production cost of P12 to P14 per kilo.
The rice shipments are then sent to local governments and Katuwang sa Diwa at Gawa para sa Masaganang Ani at Mataas na Kita (KADIWA) Centers of the DA to be sold to indigents, senior citizens, solo parents, and persons with disabilities at P20 per kilo.
'This subsidized rice program is for every Filipino family striving to put food on the table—and for every farmer who rises before dawn, rain or shine, to feed the nation. Thank you. You are the heartbeat of this program, and the reason it has meaning,' Tiu Laurel said.
Tiu Laurel in January said the NFA is set to buy at least 300,000 metric tons of rice this year, with optimism that the country will hit a record for palay production.
Under its mandate, the NFA is tasked to maintain sufficient rice buffer stocks to be sourced mainly from local farmers. The agency, for its part, said it is also mandated to keep and dispose of 99.9% of stocks in good and consumable condition. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News

Photo by Boyet Abucay The world-renowned sweet Philippine mangoes has officially reached Rome, Italy! With the collaborative efforts of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry Italy (PCCI) and the Philippine Embassy in Rome — led by H.E. Ambassador Nathaniel Imperial and Agricultural Attaché Josyline Javelosa, the first commercial export of Philippine mangoes to Italy has landed and is now being sold in Filipino stores in the city. On Monday, June 2, PCCI officials and members, together with Ambassador Imperial and Agricultural Attaché Javelosa, celebrated this milestone at Pinoy Saver's Mart Battistini, one of the official distributors of Philippine mangoes in Rome. The historic shipment weighed nearly half a ton and marks the beginning of what stakeholders hope will be a long-term presence of Filipino agricultural products in Europe. Ambassador Imperial said, 'This is only the beginning of a broad effort to lessen our country's wide trade deficit with Italy. We aim to export more fresh agricultural produce and processed foods to Italy where there is a growing market for Philippine-sourced food products.' Representatives from Artigiani Imprenditori d'Italia (CNA) joined the event and expressed support for stronger agricultural trade ties between the Philippines and Italy. Dennis Carrascoso, chairman of PCCI Italy and the key figure behind the initiative, shared the group's vision of promoting Filipino products not just in Italy, but across Europe. 'This project is the fruit of teamwork. With the financial support coordinated by Benford Fortuna of Sarap Restaurant and the documentation handled by Jocelyn Tupino of Pacific Cargo, we were able to turn this dream into reality,' Carrascoso said. He added, 'On behalf of PCCI, we are truly grateful to the Philippine Embassy and to all our fellow Filipinos who supported — and continue to support — this initiative. This is just the beginning.' This achievement is more than just a successful shipment — it is a proud symbol of the Philippines' agricultural excellence. It also opens doors for more opportunities for Filipino farmers, exporters, and entrepreneurs to compete in the global market. The good news? More stores in Rome are now offering Philippine mangoes, including Mancini on the Go and Sarap Restaurant. For Filipino farmers and agribusinesses back home, this is a clear message: our harvests are world-class, and the world is ready for more. — BAP, GMA Integrated News

Realtor Filipino Homes enters Middle East market

"Now that I am a licensed broker in Dubai, we are opening up legitimate, professional opportunities for cross-selling. Brokers in the Philippines can now market and sell Dubai properties in partnership with us," said Filipino Homes' Anthony Leuterio. Filipino Homes video screenshot A Philippine real estate platform is expanding its footprint in the Middle East. In a press release issued Tuesday, Filipino Homes founder Anthony Leuterio announced that the platform may now legally and actively engage in property transactions in Dubai after he became a licensed property broker there. 'This is a milestone for Filipino Homes,' Leuterio said. 'Now that I am a licensed broker in Dubai, we are opening up legitimate, professional opportunities for cross-selling. Brokers in the Philippines can now market and sell Dubai properties in partnership with us.' Leuterio said brokers in Dubai can partner directly with Filipino Homes to co-manage property listings, which will later create new channels for collaboration between real estate professionals in the Philippines and the United Arab Emirates. ''A lot of foreigners and Filipinos want to invest in Dubai but don't know brokers who are licensed there. Now, through FHI Global Properties, they have a trusted, Filipino-owned agency they can rely on,'' he said. According to Leuterio, the expansion will enable Philippine-based brokers to take part in international transactions, helping them broaden their clientele and income potential. It will also provide new career opportunities for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who are based in Dubai, allowing them to become part-time brokers or full-fledged real estate professionals. 'We can now collaborate with developers in both countries, leveraging our globally competitive systems and platforms. Filipino Homes is ready to facilitate business both ways—selling Dubai properties in the Philippines and Philippine properties to Dubai-based investors,'' he said. Meanwhile, Leuterio earlier announced that his Cebu-based Filipino Homes was organizing the Asian Real Estate Summit (ARES) 2025, which will take place on July 1 and 2, 2025, in Bangkok, Thailand. Leuterio said he is expecting participation to grow, with more than 30 top developers and 1,000 real estate professionals anticipated to attend. — Anna Felicia Bajo/BM, GMA Integrated News

DTI certifies 4 companies as 1st export-oriented firms under CREATE MORE

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Tuesday announced it has certified the first four companies as Export-Oriented Enterprises (EOEs) under the Corporate Recovery and Tax Incentives for Enterprises to Maximize Opportunities for Reinvigorating the Economy (CREATE MORE) law. The first four companies awarded with EOE certifications are as follows: Dole Philippines Inc. (Est. 1963): A global leader in tropical fruit exports, Dole cultivates vast plantations across Mindanao and Luzon, supplying fresh and processed pineapples and juices to markets in the Americas, Europe, and Asia. The company is also expanding into sustainable agriculture and biofuel production. Philsaga Mining Corporation (PMC) (Est. 2001): PMC operates the Coo Gold Mine in Agusan del Sur, extracting over 900,000 metric tons of ore annually. Krystle Exports Philippines, Inc. (Est. 1987): Krystle Exports is a distributor of premium Filipino food and non-food products. It also partners with local manufacturers to deliver high-quality goods to the US, Hong Kong, and the Middle East. Bosch Service Solutions Inc. (Est. 2010): Based in Taguig City, Bosch provides Business Process Outsourcing and customer experience services to global clients, including the Bosch Group. The DTI said its Export Marketing Bureau (EMB) facilitated the ceremonial awarding of EOE certificates to the first four companies. The EOE certification, it said, signifies the implementation rollout of the CREATE MORE Act's VAT-related incentives for exporters. The Trade Department said the certification grants eligible enterprises access to critical tax benefits that reduce operational costs and fuel reinvestment in innovation and expansion. 'This landmark initiative marks more than a policy breakthrough—it signals our readiness to compete, scale, and lead in the global market. By strengthening the ability of our exporters to expand their reach, we are also generating jobs, and driving inclusive economic growth,' said Trade Secretary Cristina Roque. 'This commitment advances President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. vision for a 'Bagong Pilipinas,' as we build a more agile and opportunity-rich environment for Filipino exporters through the strategic incentives of the CREATE MORE Act,' added Roque. The Republic Act No. 12066 or CREATE MORE Act was signed into law on November 8, 2024. Under the law, qualified companies may be certified as EOEs if at least 70% of their annual sales come from export transactions. Once certified, EOEs gain access to VAT zero-rating on local purchases of goods and services, as well as VAT-exempt importation of goods directly used in export activities. These targeted incentives significantly lower the cost of doing business, allowing exporters to scale operations, enhance product quality, and compete more effectively in international markets, according to the DTI. The Trade Department called on eligible exporters to apply for EOE certification and 'fully leverage the performance-based benefits under the CREATE MORE Act.' —Ted Cordero/RF, GMA Integrated News
