Eritrea: Berik Sub-Zone Declared Free of Female Genital Mutilation
Berik sub-zone in the Central Region was officially declared free of female genital mutilation (FGM) on 30 April during a ceremony held under the theme 'With Coordinated Effort – Avoid Female Genital Mutilation.'
Mr. Tesfu Fesehatsion, administrator of the sub-zone, stated that declarations had previously been made at village and area administration levels, and that this milestone marks a sub-zonal-level declaration.
Col. Gebrehans Woldegergis, Director General of Social Services in the Central Region, highlighted the serious health consequences of FGM and called for active involvement from all stakeholders to eradicate the practice. He also congratulated the residents of the sub-zone.
Mr. Zerit Tewoldebrhan, Managing Director of the region, emphasized that making the declaration is not sufficient on its own and called on residents and institutions to ensure continuous monitoring and support for its sustainability.
The event featured a general knowledge competition among students. Prizes were awarded to the winners, and certificates of recognition were presented to villages that declared themselves free of females' genital mutilation.

Liberia: Ambassador Yin Chengwu Attends Handover Ceremony of Cardiology Department Project Under Paired Hospital Cooperation Mechanism
On June 3, Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Yin Chengwu attended the handover ceremony of the Cardiology Department project under the China-Liberia Paired Hospital Cooperation Mechanism. Also present were Liberian Health Minister Hon. Dr. Louise M. Kpoto, JFK Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Dr. Linda Birch, representatives from Heilongjiang Provincial Hospital, members of the 17th Chinese Medical Team to Liberia, and representatives from JFK Medical Center, totaling about 100 attendees. Minister Dr. Louise Kpoto and CEO Dr. Linda Birch expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for its long-term and strong support to Liberia's health sector. They stated that this project, as Liberia's first dedicated cardiology diagnosis and treatment department, would surely provide higher quality medical services to the people. Ambassador Yin pointed out that the Cardiology Department project is a powerful testament to the friendship between the two peoples, a concrete manifestation of China's policy towards Africa characterized by "sincerity, real results, amity and good faith", and a positive outcome of implementing the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Beijing Summit. Eritrea: World Environment Day Observed at National Level
World Environment Day, 5 June, was observed at the national level at the Central Region Administration Hall under the theme 'Ending Plastic Pollution.' The occasion was attended by senior Government and PFDJ officials, as well as representatives of UN offices in Eritrea and other invited guests. Speaking at the event, Mr. Tesfay Gebreselasie, Minister of Land, Water and Environment, stated that plastic pollution has reached uncontrollable levels globally, and emphasized that addressing the issue requires collective action. Minister Tesfay noted that unattended waste—especially plastic—has severe health consequences. He called for proper waste management, support for enterprises engaged in waste processing, and the implementation of long-term practical measures to improve waste management. Mr. Fesehaye Haile, Governor of the Central Region, stated that raising public awareness alone is not sufficient and emphasized the need for an integrated effort to ensure a safe environment. Mr. Mulubrhan Gebreyohannes, Head of Environment at the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment, presented a research paper on 'Management and Consequences of Plastic Waste.' The event also featured a general knowledge competition among secondary school students, and awards were presented to the winners.
