Wiaan Mulder still adamant about THAT declaration with Brian Lara record there for the taking
Image: Backpagepix
Considering he made the fifth highest score in Test cricket history, South Africa's Wiaan Mulder's has an incredible amount of criticism for his incredible 367 not out against hosts Zimbabwe last month.
The reason for the criticism is that Mulder was also captaining South Africa for the first time in the Test in Bulawayo, but chose to declare the Proteas innings on 625 at lunch on day two.
With plenty of time left in the Test match, Mulder could have easily made an effort to eclipse the highest score in the format, which is the unbeaten 400 West Indian legend Brian Lara scored back in 2004.
A few weeks later, Mulder believes it was the correct call.

Hawies Fourie shuffles Boland Cavaliers pack for crucial Currie Cup clash against Lions
Boland prop Wayrin Losper is set to play his 50th match for the Cavaliers on Sunday against the Lions in the Currie Cup. Image: BackpagePix Boland Cavaliers coach Hawies Fourie had to rejig his forwards pack following injuries to crucial players as they prepare for a tough battle with the high-flying Lions on Sunday in the Currie Cup. Fourie made changes to his loose trio and in the front row for the clash in Wellington (3pm kick-off), with No 8 Sibusiso Sangweni and flanker Gift Dlamini both suffering injuries, alongside loosehead Lamla Nunu. Dlamini's injury is particularly severe, having broken his leg during a tight encounter against Griquas. His absence for the rest of the season is a significant blow to the Wellington-based team. The hard-working Sangweni had a strong showing in Kimberley and played through his injury as he looked to get his team over the line. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Unfortunately, the Wellington side suffered a 48-39 loss, but they are charged up for the duel in front of their home fans. However, the challenge posed by the Lions, who have shown prowess on the field, is daunting. The Cavaliers understand that they need to bolster their set pieces and strengthen their defensive line if they hope to stymie the visitors. After struggling up front in both their matches, Fourie will hope the changes to the pack do not affect his team too much. Loosehead prop Wayrin Losper, a former Varsity Cup star, will pack down in his 50th match, and his performance with hooker Sydney Tobias and tighthead Dayan van der Westerhuizen will be heavily scrutinised. Additionally, the Cavaliers will see the debut of veteran scrumhalf Louis Schreuder, returning from injury to replace the dynamic Chriswill September, who now finds himself on the bench. Should Mthokozisi Gumede be called upon as a substitute, he will also make his debut. Losper says it will be a massive honour to run out in his 50th match for the Cavaliers after joining the team in 2019. 'The dream was always to play rugby professionally and now that I am playing in my 50th, it feels like I have lived that dream and things can only progress from here on,' the loosehead said.

Sharks XV aim for Currie Cup redemption with Junior Springbok talents
Scrumhalf Bradley Davids will be tasked to steer the attack of the Sharks XV alongside Junior Springbok flyhalf Vusi Moyo when they face the Cheetahs on Saturday in Clermont in the Currie Cup. Image: BackpagePix The Sharks XV reflected deeply on a disappointing week ahead of their third-round Currie Cup clash against the Cheetahs in Durban (5.10pm kick-off) on Saturday afternoon. After being walloped 64-0 by the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld this past weekend, the Sharks have set their sights on turning their fortunes around as they continue to invest in young players for the tournament. Despite the heavy defeat, there is still positivity in the camp, and according to head coach JP Pietersen, they've prepared well for the onslaught from their Free State counterparts. 'We are only two games in and there are still a lot more left to play in the competition,' Pietersen said on Thursday. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ He announced a side brimming with Junior Springboks for the duel at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Clermont. Exciting flyhalf Vusi Moyo will partner scrumhalf Bradley Davids in a brand new half-back pairing, while Jaco Williams shifts to fullback. In the midfield and on the wing, Pietersen opted to strengthen the side with more experienced campaigners. 'We spoke honestly on Monday about our performance and how we could fix it,' Pietersen said about their preparation. 'Plum (John Plumtree, Sharks URC head coach) and Neil (Powell, director of rugby) spoke to the boys and told them this is part of the process of what we are doing, and it might not be working now. But it was good for them to speak to the boys.' According to Pietersen, the Cheetahs will be a bit of an unknown factor, especially with their new coaching staff of Frans Steyn and Ruan Pienaar. The duo is, of course, former teammates of Pietersen at the Boks and Sharks. He said they are preparing for a physical onslaught, and every team will target them in that department because of their youngsters.
