Edinburgh Lost Record Shops: 8 lost records shops we remember fondly in Edinburgh

Scotsman24-05-2025

Edinburgh is home to some incredible records shops, its varied neighbourhoods have managed to maintain a decent level of options compared to other cities. However, there are still plenty of record stores that have been lost over the years.
Those shops were much loved by record buyers, but their time had to come eventually - including some big chain stores.
Scroll through our gallery to see eight of those lost record stores which are fondly remembered by music lovers in Edinburgh.
1 . Bruce's Record Shop
The 'I Found it at Bruce's' slogan became iconic in its own right. But the Rose Street record store was much loved by customers for decades. | TSPL Photo: Denis Straughan Photo Sales
2 . Fopp

3 . The Other Record Shop
Once on Edinburgh's High Street, The Other Record Shop moved to Princes Street in 1985. Sadly it wouldn't last much longer. It offered second-hand records alongside new releases. Photo: Bill Newton Photo Sales
4 . Avalanche Records
Avalanche Records has been a mainstay of Edinburgh's vinyl music trade for decades, but it's Cockburn Street and then Grassmarket spots were favourites. Record Store Day would see big crowds cram into the stores to catch acts. | TSPL Photo Sales

42 photos capturing the thrill of summer holidays in Scotland during the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s

This retro photo gallery shows children and their families making the most of the summer around Scotland during the 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s. Holidaymakers are pictured paddling at the beach, taking the plunge at the lido and cruising down the river in these nostalgic images. Trips to the zoo, where visitors are pictured watching the popular penguin parade; pony rides; and summer fairs, where the attractions included a dog on a scooter, are among the summer activities captured in these atmospheric black and white pictures. Sunbathers are shown soaking up the rays, or using any means possible to cool down as the sun shines, but crowds are also seen huddled in the rain when the summer weather wasn't being so kind. A floating museum, a Scottish football legend getting mobbed by young fans, and fun times at the fairground are among the other memorable images of yesteryear captured in this gallery. Do these photos bring back any happy memories for you of summers past? Do you have retro pictures or nostalgic memories to share with us? Robbie Williams in Edinburgh: Fans flock to Murrayfield to see pop showman kick off UK tour

The former Take That star declared when the tour was announced last year that it would be 'my boldest yet' and promised to include songs from the movie 'Better Man'. The Edinburgh appearance is one of only four UK dates, which will see him also visiting London, Manchester and Bath. Fans were happy to chat ahead of the gig about how long they had liked Robbie Williams and what their favourite songs were. Williams previously performed at Murrayfield in 2003 and 2017. He has won an astonishing 18 Brit Awards and equalled The Beatles' record for most number one albums in the UK chart. 1 .
