Edinburgh Lost Record Shops: 8 lost records shops we remember fondly in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is home to some incredible records shops, its varied neighbourhoods have managed to maintain a decent level of options compared to other cities. However, there are still plenty of record stores that have been lost over the years. Those shops were much loved by record buyers, but their time had to come eventually - including some big chain stores. Scroll through our gallery to see eight of those lost record stores which are fondly remembered by music lovers in Edinburgh. 1 . Bruce's Record Shop The 'I Found it at Bruce's' slogan became iconic in its own right. But the Rose Street record store was much loved by customers for decades. | TSPL Photo: Denis Straughan Photo Sales 2 . Fopp Fopp record store closed its doors for the last time on New Year's Eve in 2023. It was a great place to pick up records in the city centre. Photo: Third Party Photo Sales 3 . The Other Record Shop Once on Edinburgh's High Street, The Other Record Shop moved to Princes Street in 1985. Sadly it wouldn't last much longer. It offered second-hand records alongside new releases. Photo: Bill Newton Photo Sales 4 . Avalanche Records Avalanche Records has been a mainstay of Edinburgh's vinyl music trade for decades, but it's Cockburn Street and then Grassmarket spots were favourites. Record Store Day would see big crowds cram into the stores to catch acts. | TSPL Photo Sales Related topics: Edinburgh

Bruce Springsteen Barely Misses Hitting The Top 10 With A Major Collaboration

Bruce Springsteen and The Killers' Encore at the Garden nearly returns to the U.K. top 10, landing ... More at No. 11 on the Official Vinyl Singles chart this week. (Photo by Sergione Infuso/Corbis via Getty Images) Just a few days ago, Bruce Springsteen surprise-released a new EP titled Land of Hope and Dreams. The six-song set features recordings from the Manchester opening night of the latest leg of his tour with the E Street Band. It arrives just a few weeks before the rocker is set to deliver seven full-lengths at once. Amidst all the excitement surrounding Springsteen's catalog at the moment, the superstar nearly returns to the top 10 on a pair of charts in the U.K. with yet another recently-shared project. Springsteen joined The Killers this past Record Store Day to release a very special short effort, Encore at the Garden. The project was recorded when the rock musician joined the band at a Madison Square Garden concert in October 2022. The vinyl single features just three live tracks: "Badlands," "Dustland," and "Born to Run,' and it becomes a bestseller again in the U.K. this frame. The collaborative project returns to a pair of tallies and nearly climbs into the highest tier on both of them. Encore at the Garden misses the top 10 on the Official Vinyl Singles chart by just one space, landing at No. 11. The same three-song EP, which is credited as a single instead of an album due to its length, reappears at No. 13 on the Official Physical Singles list. The set peaked at No. 3 on both the Official Physical Singles and Official Vinyl Singles charts, debuting in that position in late April. It barely budged in its second frame on the two tallies, dipping just one spot on the physical-only roster and holding steady at No. 3 on the vinyl ranking. Throughout its run, the project has spent just three frames on the Official Vinyl Singles chart and one more on the Official Physical Singles ranking. In just a matter of days, Springsteen might collect a new top-selling album in the U.K. with Land of Hope and Dreams. The EP reached No. 1 on iTunes' Top Albums tally in the country, and though it had only a few days to rack up purchases — since it was released midweek — it may still have managed to perform well enough to appear on a handful of lists. In a little over a month, Springsteen will also release the box set Tracks II: The Lost Albums. The project features seven finished full-lengths that were written and recorded at different points in his career, but never shared with the public.

Vinyl fans set to be in dreamland as monthly pop up visits Bridge of Allan

The pop up shop will visit the town's Union Street - all the idea of a Causewayhead music fanatic wanting to spread his love for vinyl and finding hidden classics. Collecting records has been something that Causewayhead based Norrie McCulloch has been passionate about since the early 80s when he was first finding the music of bands such as AC/DC, The Smiths and Echo & The Bunnymen. This Saturday, May 24, from 10am-4pm, finds him bringing his monthly pop up record shop to the Masonic Hall at 2 Union Street, Bridge of Allan (FK9 4NS). ‌ Those who head along can expect 'a huge selection of excellent records of all genres' to dig through as well as many rare and collectible items alongside classics and loads of bargains. ‌ Norrie moved to Stirling 18 years ago after securing a post with the local authority which saw him responsible for the arts and music provision within Youth Services. He left the local authority in 2015 to return to self employment and focus on his own music and arts career. He had to rethink his whole career however after extensive hand surgery in late 2021 to remedy a tendon problem that had made playing guitar, painting and teaching impossible. His lifelong love for vinyl records prompted him to set up 'The Record Hide' - Stirling's first mobile pop-up record shop. With the increased interest in vinyl records in recent years Norrie wanted to offer people fair and transparent prices and a good quality friendly service to those who have records to sell. He said: 'I travel to the customer so there is no need for them to lift boxes of heavy records and drive them anywhere. ‌ 'Instead I'll come to you, have a look through the records you have and provide you with an offer. 'Anyone with records to sell are also welcome to take them along to the pop up shop in Bridge of Allan if they wish or they can just get in touch with me via the website for a chat.' The Record Hide have been hosting pop-up shops regularly now for two years and plan to keep them monthly and in Bridge of Allan for now but they have also been looking for premises with the hopes to establish a more permanent base sometime in the near future. ‌ 'We are always happy to hear from vinyl fans via our website who may be looking for a certain record for their own collection be it some rare obscure and hard to find gem or just a nice clean copy of a classic pop record. 'If we don't have it already within our extensive stock we will likely be able to help you find a copy.' ‌ There is already a well established crowd that comes to every Record Hide event including many locals and people from much further afield. 'Our last pop up shop coincided with Record Store Day,' said Norries, 'and featured guest sellers and a DJ spot from Dave McGowan of legendary Scottish bands Teenage Fanclub and Belle & Sebastian. 'The event was our busiest yet and brought hundreds of vinyl lovers from areas such as Glasgow and Edinburgh through to Bridge of Allan for the day.' The Record Hide also offers their mobile pop up record shop for events such as festivals and community fairs. Anyone wishing to have a record stall at their event or just to keep up to date with upcoming pop up shops can visit:

She maintains a wide range of price points. Some of her rarer inventory, going back to the 1960s and '70s, is priced for collectors, she said, 'but I also recognize that my demographic is college students. I'm 10 minutes from BU. I remember being in college, when I did not have $80 to spend on a T-shirt.' At her own store in Chicago, Lewis sells vintage apparel, home goods, and jewelry. But she specializes in antique art prints. 'For me, it's about historic preservation,' she said. 'I'm keeping these pieces alive, and out of the landfill.' For many vintage shop owners, sustainability has become a key by-product of their business. Consumers are more attuned than ever, they say, to the drawbacks of the 'fast fashion' industry and big-box retail, including environmental damage and the exploitation of underpaid workers. 'Instead of going to a big-box store looking for a plant stand, they buy something from me that has oodles of character and patina,' she said. 'I love bringing a piece of furniture back from the brink, refurbishing it, and it becomes somebody else's new heirloom.' She abides by a favorite quote from William Morris, the 19th-century architect and designer associated with the Victorian-era Arts and Crafts Movement in England: 'Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.' Ardito also has a motto she came up with on her own. 'We're saving the planet, and being badass doing it,' she said with a laugh. James Sullivan can be reached at . James Sullivan can be reached at

Aberdeen's Holburn HiFi hitting the right notes despite retail challenges

For the past 52 years Holburn HiFi in Aberdeen has been helping music fans stay connected. The popular audio visual supplier has faced some tough times with retail challenges in the city. Despite this owner Jonathan Turner has continued to adapt the business and is seeing a growing demand for its installation service. Holburn HiFi not only works in homes but also commercial projects. The shop sells audio equipment and home cinema products from brands such as Bang & Olufsen, Sony, Sonos and Technics. Jonathan took over the running of the Holburn Street shop when he was just 21. He was able to buy the business with the help of an uncle who financed the deal along with other family members. Jonathan said: 'Retail in Aberdeen is generally tough. 'I think in times like these, people are a bit more careful about what they buy, they want things that are well built and are going to last a long time. 'We're selling higher-end kit, so it's people that are making an investment in maybe a turntable or a whole system that will last them a long time. 'Turntables are still a big thing and you'd be amazed how many we sell.' One thing that always proves popular with customers is the annual Record Store Day which saw customers start queuing at 11pm the night before. Its installation business, named Holburn Co, has continued to grow with Jonathan now employing five member of staff. He said: 'It's a growing part of the business, that needed a dedicated team. 'Although we do home automation, we also do commercial work as well. 'There's all sorts of jobs in weird and wonderful places. 'One project is on Papa Stour, which involves taking a ferry to Shetland, driving across Shetland, then getting another ferry again just to reach the site. 'We've also worked at the coffee shop in Balmoral Castle.' Jonathan also owns Glasgow Audio which provides the same services as Holburn Co. Looking to the future Jonathan is planning to expand the Glasgow team and hasn't ruled out expanding into other areas in the future.
