'For example, in 2021, the recorded losses amounted to RM7 million, which then dropped to RM2 million in 2022, RM1.8 million in 2023 and RM1.02 million last year,' he said during a press conference after launching the 2025 International Pineapple Industry Seminar.
Arthur highlighted that resilient pineapple varieties and improved data collection have enhanced cultivation efficiency. He urged LPNM to stay proactive in adopting new strategies to tackle natural disaster challenges, ensuring stable farmer incomes and consistent pineapple supply.
Key measures include early prevention, efficient irrigation, digital technology, IoT, drones, and solar energy. The seminar, co-organised by LPNM, the Agriculture Ministry, and UPM Alumni Association, drew 400 participants, including industry stakeholders and farm operators.

MMM to acquire outdoor advertising firm for RM16mil in PN17 plan
KUALA LUMPUR: MMM Group Bhd is acquiring outdoor advertising firm EDSB Outdoor Sdn Bhd for RM16 million, as part of its Practice Note 17 (PN17) proposed regularisation plan. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia, the company said it has entered into a heads of agreement (HOA) with EDSB owners Chong Yoke Lai and Gan Soon Choon, who each holds a 70 per cent and 30 per cent interest in the company. MMM, which will pay RM14 million in cash and RM2 million in new shares, said Chong and Gan have undertaken to provide a profit guarantee of RM2 million annually for three consecutive financial years, commencing from the year in which the definitive share sale agreement is executed. It added that the acquisition is subject to conditions, including board approval, completion of due diligence, agreement on valuation by an independent valuer and approvals from shareholders and regulators as part of its proposed regularisation plan. "The execution of the HOA is not expected to have any material effect on the earnings, net assets and gearing of the company for the financial year ending March 31, 2026. "Nonetheless, the company expects a positive contribution to its earnings in the future should the proposed acquisition be finalised and successfully completed," it said. MMM said Chong and Gan will remain as directors of EDSB upon completion and continue their current roles in managing day-to-day operations. The HOA will be effective for six months from Aug 21, or until the signing of a definitive share sale agreement, unless mutually extended or terminated.

Sarawak could replace Kedah as country's 'rice bowl' by 2030, Dewan Rakyat told
KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak is set to emerge as Malaysia's largest rice producer by 2030, potentially overtaking Kedah's long-held role as the country's 'rice bowl', says Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup. He said Sarawak aimed to become a food security hub under its Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), aligned with the National Food Security Policy Action Plan 2021-2025. 'The commitment will be translated through the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), where the Federal Government has outlined three key strategies for the agri-food sector: boosting food production, strengthening supply security, and reinforcing supply chains,' he told the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Aug 21). To drive the agenda, he said 10 development projects focusing on irrigation and drainage upgrades are underway with a total allocation of RM271.89mil. An additional RM157.8mil has been requested under 13MP. Rodiyah Sapiee (GPS-Batang Sadong) had asked about plans to make Sarawak a food security hub or designated Food Security Focus Zone under the five-year policy. He said three new projects worth RM88.3mil have also been proposed in Integrated Agricultural Development Areas (IADA) in Samarahan, Bijat-Stumbin (Sri Aman), and Daro Padi (Mukah). 'These initiatives are expected to significantly increase rice yields and help balance agricultural development in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak,' he said. Beyond rice, Arthur said the ministry was also focusing on other strategic crops such as grain corn, onions and coffee to reduce import dependence. Three projects worth RM10.21mil will be implemented in Sarawak during 13MP. According to him, the government is targeting 30% local production of grain corn by 2040 and onions by 2030. In addition, he said the pineapple industry in the Bornean states will receive a boost under the Pineapple Industry Modernisation and Empowerment Project. "Through the programme, Sarawakians will be able to participate in the entire value chain from production and marketing to downstream product development, waste utilisation, mechanisation and automation – aimed at improving productivity and making the sector more competitive," he added.

KPKT Explores Formation Of Single Agency For Waste Management
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- The Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) is exploring the formation of a single agency to manage solid waste, e-waste, sewage and radioactive waste through optimised use of resources, the Dewan Rakyat was told today. Minister Nga Kor Ming said the initiative was among the key strategies outlined in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), as part of a comprehensive effort to safeguard planetary health and achieve zero waste. 'This single agency will encompass the five key principles of waste management, namely collection, transportation, recovery, treatment and disposal. 'This effort is in line with the commitment to achieve zero waste, while promoting green economic growth, advancing social well-being and ensuring environmental sustainability, as outlined in the Circular Economy Blueprint for Solid Waste in Malaysia,' he said during a question-and-answer session. He said this in response to a question from Datuk Dr Richard Rapu @ Aman Begri (GPS-Betong) on the ministry's strategic measures to strengthen solid waste management governance, including aspects of the circular economy, green job creation and the adoption of innovative technologies. Responding to a supplementary question from Richard Rapu on the ministry's strategy to assist local authorities (PBTs) in tackling rising solid waste management costs, Nga said the government had allocated substantial funds for public cleaning under the 13MP. 'Almost every year, RM2 billion is allocated to states that have adopted Act 672. Selangor and Penang have now agreed in principle to adopt the same act, and assistance will be extended to their respective PBTs to ensure efficient solid waste management,' he said. Nga said under the 13MP, the government had set a target for 20 per cent of waste collection vehicles to be electric-powered by 2027, in line with the country's decarbonisation policy.
