Etihad is squeezing outsized luxuries into its smallest aircraft

WHEN Etihad Airways received its first Airbus SE A380 jets a good decade ago, the airline furnished the front of the giant double decker with a veritable luxury playground it called the Residence, a three-room layout featuring a double bed, living area and shower cubicle — all with a personal butler on hand.
Now the Abu Dhabi-based carrier wants to squeeze its premium offering into far more constrained quarters: the narrow confines of an Airbus SE A321 long-range aircraft that joins its fleet in the next few months. While Etihad has dispensed with its Residence servant in tailcoats and white cotton gloves, the airline promises amenities like sliding privacy doors, lie-flat seats, and large screens, all packed into an aircraft no wider than a city bus.
Etihad's ambitious cabin layout highlights how the workhorse aircraft in the industry — the Airbus A320 family and the Boeing Co. 737 — are increasingly pushing into spheres that were once the reserve of large planes. The A321LR and its longer-range sibling, the A321XLR, are built for long-distance routes like Europe to India or across the Atlantic, meaning passengers expect amenities they'd typically enjoy when flying on much bigger aircraft.
While budget carrier Wizz Air Holdings Plc has chosen to go the no-frills approach with its narrobody long-range jets, other airlines are using the planes to expand premium service on longer routes without needing to fill the more fuel-guzzling and sometimes too-large widebody jets. Spanish carrier Iberia and JetBlue Airways Corp. deploy the aircraft on the lucrative transatlantic route and provide business class with lie-flat seats.
Etihad is going one step further with its first-class offering, which occupies the first row of the A321LR. Passengers will also have access to a so-called 'land and leave' service to skip the baggage carousel, as well as a limousine drive to the aircraft to bypass the shuttle bus whenever a plane is parked remotely from the departure building.
The airline is set to get 10 A321LR this year and will deploy them to destinations including Paris, Phuket, Riyadh and Zurich. –BLOOMBERG

DayOne secures RM15bil landmark deal for sustainable data centres

OCBC Bank (Malaysia) Bhd chief executive officer Tan Chor Sen KUALA LUMPUR: DayOne Data Centers has closed a landmark RM15bil equivalent multicurrency financing, comprising a RM7.5bil Murabahah Term Financing facility and a US$1.7bil offshore term loan facility. OCBC Bank (M) Bhd and its parent, Singapore-based Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation Limited, acted as joint coordinator, mandated lead arranger, bookrunner, and green financing coordinator (MLAB), with OCBC Bank also serving as joint Shariah adviser. The financial close was commemorated at a signing ceremony held today. In a statement, OCBC Bank said the dual-tranche financing—structured under the Green Loan Principles—will partially fund the refinancing and capital expenditure of DayOne's data centres in Johor, which meet or are expected to meet LEED 'Gold' or higher certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, setting a new benchmark for sustainable digital infrastructure. Headquartered in Singapore, DayOne is a global leader in digital infrastructure, with a growing footprint across tier-one and emerging markets, including Singapore, Johor (Malaysia), Batam (Indonesia), Greater Bangkok, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and beyond. OCBC Bank Chief Executive Officer Tan Chor Sen said that, as one of the largest integrated financial services groups in the region, OCBC's regional strength enables it to support both the onshore and offshore tranches of this landmark syndication. 'As a key MLAB, we supported DayOne with one of the highest underwriting commitments, reflecting our commitment to fostering a sustainable future that aligns with our leadership in responsible finance.' Meanwhile, OCBC Bank managing director, senior banker and head of investment banking Tan Ai Chin said: 'OCBC Bank is honoured to have acted as MLAB for this landmark financing, underscoring our dominance as the top lead arranger in the syndicated loan market. The 'double-green' structure—merging Islamic and sustainable finance, coupled with the green feature of the facility—drew overwhelming demand, with oversubscription of two times by local and international banks.' 'We have been a leader in digital infrastructure financing regionally and remain dedicated to delivering tailored ESG financing solutions to drive sustainable digital infrastructure ecosystems forward,' she said. The financing also involved CIMB Investment Bank Bhd, CIMB Bank Bhd (Singapore Branch), Crédit Agricole CIB, DBS Bank Ltd, Maybank Investment Bank Bhd, Standard Chartered Bank (Singapore), United Overseas Bank Limited, and UOB (M) Bhd as MLABs.

Nintendo's Switch 2 sets sales record in boon for games sector

NINTENDO Co. sold 3.5 million-plus units of the Switch 2 in just four days, a record-breaking start for the company's first new console in eight years. The numbers, released by the company Wednesday, bode well for its target to sell 15 million units by March next year. They also reinforce analysts' projections that Nintendo may be able to sell far more if it can pump up supply. Gamers from Tokyo to San Francisco lined up for hours last week to get their hands on one of the most highly anticipated gadgets of the year. The long-awaited Switch 2 succeeds a global hit in the original Switch, which pioneered a hybrid design that allows play both at home on a TV and on the move. The release of the new Switch was regarded as a watershed moment for the industry, steering business decisions by partners and competitors for years to come. At a time of thinning margins and exploding development budgets, a popular new console may galvanize the sector and provide a counterbalance to the increasing dominance of a handful of marquee, live-service games. Catching up with runaway demand is the first major challenge Nintendo faces. President Shuntaro Furukawa has apologized after customers came away from lotteries for the Switch 2 empty-handed. The Kyoto-based company has asked its partners to speed up production of the console. It's also secured agreements from Japanese online marketplace operators such as Rakuten Group Inc., Mercari Inc. and LY Corp. to discourage resellers from taking advantage of the hardware's scarcity. The console is manufactured mainly in China by partners including Foxconn Technology Group. Nintendo's shares, which have gyrated because of concerns about how tariffs may disrupt supply, were down more than 3% in Tokyo. 'The pace is good,' said Hideki Yasuda, an analyst with Toyo Securities. 'The key will be to maintain assembly capacity and increase production going forward.' A chronic shortage may spur consumers to turn elsewhere and flatten momentum. Nintendo's priority is to sustain launch momentum for as long as possible, Furukawa told analysts at an earnings briefing in May. That's more difficult due to the Switch 2's higher retail price compared with its predecessor and growing weakness in the global economy. Furukawa has also warned the company may consider raising the console's price in the future, depending on US President Donald Trump's tariff measures. –BLOOMBERG

National Trades Union Congress exploring options to match retrenched Jetstar Asia staff to roles at SIA Group: Labour chief

Jetstar Asia said it will support the workers with retrenchment packages and employment support. - ST SINGAPORE: The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) is exploring possible opportunities to match retrenched Jetstar Asia employees, including crew and corporate staff, to suitable roles with the Singapore Airlines Group, said labour chief Ng Chee Meng. Over 500 employees from Jetstar Asia will be retrenched following the closure of the Singapore-based low-cost airline on July 31. In a Facebook post on June 11, Ng said that the NTUC Aerospace and Aviation Cluster will work with Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and Changi Airport Group to identify opportunities for the affected employees as well. He said: 'The news of Jetstar Asia's closure is a hit for the many employees of the airline. They have contributed much to the airline over the years.' He added that the NTUC and Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers' Union (SMMWU) were informed of the retrenchments in advance, and SMMWU has been working closely with Jetstar Asia to support the workers. The retrenchment benefits provided are in line with the Tripartite Advisory on Managing Excess Manpower and Responsible Retrenchment, but support goes beyond just financial compensation, Ng added. Starting next week, NTUC and NTUC's Employment and Employability Institute will be on-site at Changi Airport Terminal 1 to provide direct support, including career coaching, skills upgrading, and employability assistance, he said. In a statement on Wednesday (June 11), Jetstar Asia said it will support workers with retrenchment packages, employment support, or provide them with other opportunities within the Qantas group or with other airlines and aviation companies in Singapore. The airline's closure is part of a 'strategic restructure' by its parent company, Australian flag carrier Qantas. Retrenched employees will receive a redundancy payment of four weeks per year of service, a bonus for this financial year, a special 'thank you' payment as well as other benefits. In a separate statement, the Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers' Union (SMMWU) said it has worked closely with management and negotiated with the company to ensure that affected members and workers receive fair compensation. SMMWU is affiliated with the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC). Jetstar Asia has been unionised since 2009. An inter-agency task force on retrenchment said in a separate statement that it is working closely with Jetstar and the SMMWU to support the affected workers. Called the Taskforce for Responsible Retrenchment and Employment Facilitation, it comprises the Ministry of Manpower, Workforce Singapore, the NTUC and the NTUC's Employment and Employability Institute. 'Our priority is to help the affected employees with employment facilitation," said the taskforce in a statement. - The Straits Times/ANN
