US Scraps ‘Dropbox' Visa Waivers: Even Kids Will Now Face In-Person Interviews – What This Means For You
Only a few exceptions remain. Some diplomatic and official visa categories, such as A, G, NATO and TECRO still qualify for interview waivers. Limited provisions also exist for certain tourist visa renewals.
Full-validity B-1/B-2 or border-crossing visas can be renewed within 12 months of expiry. The applicant must apply from the home country, have been 18 or older when the visa was issued and have no visa refusal or ineligibility.
The end of interview waivers marks a major shift in U.S. visa policy. In-person interviews will now be standard for nearly all non-immigrant visa renewals. Age, clean travel history or previous eligibility no longer exempt applicants.
The change is already disrupting schedules. Some Dropbox interview slots for August and September have been cancelled. Applicants are being instructed to attend in-person interviews earlier than expected.
U.S. consulates expect heavy demand for interview dates. Wait times are likely to stretch. Travel plans may face delays. Countries with large numbers of affected applicants, including India, could experience the longest backlogs.
The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has also issued a policy update. A visa is now considered 'available' for the purposes of the Child Status Protection Act (CSPA) age calculation.
Immigration advocates warn that children of skilled immigrants from countries with the largest green card backlogs, including China and India, could face serious setbacks under the new rules.

White House Says Putin Proposed Meeting With Trump
Washington: US State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said on Tuesday that the upcoming meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump on August 15 in Alaska was "suggested by Putin himself." While addressing the US State Department briefing, Bruce said, "It was Putin who suggested this meeting." "He (President Trump) is going to meet with President Putin to see what he has in mind, and if it's a fair deal, he will reveal it to the European Union leaders, NATO, and President Zelensky. He says, 'I'm going in to speak to Putin and I'm going to be telling him, you've got to end this war. You've got to end it," Trump added. Bruce also highlighted Trump's frustration with Putin's actions, noting that "he has not been happy with President Putin and his actions." Meanwhile, Trump said that while addressing the White House briefing on Monday, "We're going to have a meeting with Vladimir Putin. And at the end of that meeting, probably in the first two minutes, I'll know exactly whether or not a deal can be made," he added. When asked if he sees a time when there could be normal trade between the US and Russia, Trump said, "I do. Russia has a very valuable piece of land. If Vladimir Putin went toward business instead of toward war, you know, it's a warring nation. That's what they do. They fight a lot of wars. A friend of mine said Russia is tough because they keep on fighting." Further, Trump expressed optimism about the meeting and said, "I'd like to see a ceasefire. I'd like to see the best deal that could be made for both parties." On the same day, Trump said that American tariffs on India over its purchase of Russian oil had delivered a "big blow" to Moscow, saying, "No one would have been so tough and I haven't stopped there." US President Donald Trump on Monday claimed that American tariffs on India over its purchase of Russian oil had delivered a "big blow" to Moscow, saying, "No one would have been so tough and I haven't stopped there." He said Russia has been "heavily impacted" by global pressure, including US trade actions on multiple countries.

US to end 'Dropbox' visa renewals from Sept 2: Students, workers to be hit
The United States will soon shut down its Interview Waiver Programme—better known as the 'Dropbox' facility—for most non-immigrant visas, including work and student categories. The change takes effect from September 2, 2025, and will force the majority of applicants to attend in-person interviews, even if they have a clean visa history. For years, Dropbox allowed eligible travellers to skip the face-to-face interview and submit documents at a designated location instead. It was a faster, less stressful option, particularly for Indian professionals and students. But as part of US President Donald Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill Act', signed on July 4, the policy is being rolled back in the name of 'enhancing security' and tightening screening. Immigration attorney Emily Neumann warned, 'If you're planning international travel or visa renewal this autumn, don't assume you're eligible for interview waiver (Dropbox) processing anymore. The State Department is ending waiver eligibility for most visa categories, including H-1B, L-1, F-1, and J-1.' What is changing under the new policy • Most interview waivers for visa renewals, including H-1B, H-4, L1, F, M, O1 and J, will end. • Children under 14 and seniors over 79 will no longer qualify. • Only certain diplomatic or official visas—A, G, NATO and TECRO—remain eligible. • A narrow set of B-1/B-2 tourist and business visa renewals can still avoid interviews, but only under strict criteria. • Even if you qualify, a consular officer can still require an interview. Why the change hits India hard India is among the top users of the Dropbox service. US consulates in India already face some of the world's longest visa wait times, and removing this facility is expected to: • Spike demand for interview slots • Push wait times into several months • Disrupt project schedules for companies employing H-1B staff • Delay academic plans for students Some applicants have already seen Dropbox slots for August and September cancelled, with instructions to book in-person interviews instead. What applicants should do if appointments are cancelled • Check your email for a cancellation notice from your US consular post. • Log in to your visa profile to confirm and rebook. • Restart the application to respond to updated eligibility questions. • Note that cancellations do not count towards your maximum number of reschedules. Practical impact for travellers and employers 'The impact of these changes will be immediate and far-reaching,' said immigration lawyer Reddy. 'Consular posts will see increased demand for appointments, especially in high-volume categories such as student and work visas. Wait times, backlogs and delays are expected through the autumn and holiday seasons.' Reddy added, 'Anyone in the United States on valid status but with an expired visa—or whose most recent visa was in a different category—should be cautious about travelling. These individuals will now need an in-person interview before re-entering the US, and given the risk of delays or denials, non-essential travel should be avoided.' Steps to prepare for the change • Begin the DS-160 application early and pay the MRV fee promptly. • Gather all supporting documents in advance. • Monitor the website of your local US embassy or consulate for updates. • Allow extra time for both interview booking and visa processing. • Employers should adjust onboarding or travel plans for staff accordingly. Who can still use the interview waiver A narrow set of applicants will retain interview waiver eligibility: • Diplomatic and official visas: A-1, A-2, C-3 (except attendants/servants), G-1 to G-4, NATO-1 to NATO-6, and TECRO E-1. • Certain B-1/B-2 tourist and business visa or Border Crossing Card renewals—only if the previous visa was full-validity, expired within the last 12 months, was issued when the applicant was over 18, and is being renewed in the same category in the country of nationality or residence, with no prior refusals or ineligibility. Even then, consular officers may require an interview at their discretion.

Telangana to build over 5,000 km of HAM roads to ramp up connectivity
Hyderabad: As part of its vision to provide better road facilities across the state, the Telangana government is set to construct 5,190 km of roads under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). The project, which will be carried out in 17 packages, aims to connect every village to its mandal centre, every mandal to its district centre, and every district to the state capital. In the first phase, the Roads & Buildings (R&B) Department will take up 17 packages covering 5,190 km at a cost of Rs 6,478 crore, while the Panchayat Raj Engineering Department will handle 7,947 km in 17 packages at a cost of approximately Rs 6,000 crore. The remaining 6,810 km will be tendered by December of this year. The plan includes four-lane roads from district centres to Hyderabad, two-lane roads from mandals to district headquarters, and the upgrading of rural roads, including converting mud roads into bitumen-surfaced ones, informed R&B Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy. Addressing a Road Show on HAM at the National Academy of Construction (NAC) on Tuesday, the Minister said the government's vision is to link every village to its mandal headquarters, every mandal to the district headquarters, and every district to Hyderabad through modern, all-weather roads. Venkat Reddy explained that the HAM combines the strengths of the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) and Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) models, with the government funding 40 per cent of the project cost in ten instalments. Contractors will invest the remaining 60 per cent, which will be repaid based on performance with inflation-linked adjustments. The model ensures low risk for investors, a steady income, and 15 years of assured maintenance, resulting in durable, pothole-free, and safer roads. He stressed that quality roads are the backbone of economic growth and said Telangana's development plan places equal emphasis on welfare and infrastructure. The Minister assured contractors and financial institutions of transparency, timely payments, and clear policy support, adding that a web-based 'TG Roads Inventory' application has been developed for real-time project monitoring. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and Panchayat Raj Minister Seethakka, along with Road Development Corporation Chairman Malreddy Ram Reddy, attended the event as chief guests.
