All aboard the new business express
For decades, Indian Railways (IR) was the nation's preferred travel partner. Then came liberalisation, low-cost airlines and a new era of flying. For business travellers, the equation was simple: flying/airports offered speed, structure and predictability. Flying became a symbol of progress - fast, efficient and aspirational. Trains were left behind in the slow lane. But that equation is shifting again. While air travel remains quick, it's not hassle-free. Long queues, security checks, baggage limits and increasingly unpredictable schedules have chipped away at flying's glamour.
Enter the railway reboot. IR, which began operations in 1853, is quietly making a play for the business crowd. On May 22, Narendra Modi inaugurated 103 Amrit Bharat stations across 18 states and UTs, part of a nationwide station upgrade scheme worth ₹11,000 cr. These revamped stations will have clean platforms, modern toilets, better accessibility and, crucially, business-friendly amenities: lounges, workspaces, Wi-Fi and AC waiting halls. Unlike cookie-cutter glass-and-steel airports, these revamped stations will reflect local art and heritage. The Secunderabad Station will have Cheriyal scroll paintings, while Ahmedabad Station will draw inspiration from the Modhera Sun temple. Coaches are getting a facelift, too. IR recently unveiled a new AC First Class coach designed for airline business class - plush interiors, ambient lighting and comfort-focused seating. Now, IR must deliver on this promise - consistently, across the board.
And here's the clincher: you don't need to go 'airplane mode' while flying from destination A to B. You can work uninterrupted on a train. Add more room to stretch out and the ability to walk into your next meeting - no baggage claim required. For India's business travellers, rail may no longer be a compromise. It might just be the smarter, smoother ride.

India-Central Asia Dialogue set to enhance anti-terror partnerships across region
New Delhi: Foreign Ministers from Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan will be in New Delhi on Thursday to attend the two-day 4th India-Central Asia Dialogue as India continues to put a strong foot forward in enhancing anti-terror and de-radicalisation partnerships across the region. External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar will host the five Central Asian foreign ministers - including Bakhtiyor Saidov (Uzbekistan), Rashid Meredov (Turkmenistan), Zheenbek Kulubaev (Kyrgyzstan), Sirojiddin Muhriddin (Tajikistan) and Murat Nurtleu (Kazakhstan) - amid continued incidents of cross-border terror, highlighted by the heinous April 22 Pahalgam terror attack which resulted in the death of 26 innocent civilians. The visiting Foreign Ministers will participate in the India-Central Asia Business Council meeting on Thursday and India-Central Asia Dialogue on Friday before wrapping up their India visit after calling on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the same evening. The India-Central Asia Dialogue, launched in January 2019 in Samarkand, serves as a key platform for strengthening ties between India and Central Asia. The second meeting took place virtually in October 2020 and focussed on regional security, counter-terrorism, and infrastructure development. The third meeting was held in New Delhi in December 2021 and emphasised connectivity to further deepen the ties between India and Central Asia. At the fourth edition of the dialogue on June 6, the ministers will discuss further strengthening of relations between India and Central Asian countries with particular focus on trade, connectivity, technology, and development cooperation. They will also share perspectives on challenges to regional security and other regional and global issues of mutual interest. "India and Central Asia, in each other's 'Extended Neighbourhood', enjoy close and cordial contemporary diplomatic relations underpinned by millennia old cultural and people-to-people exchanges. The first India-Central Summit held virtually in January 2022 and the mechanism of India-Central Asia Dialogue, at the level of Foreign Ministers, have taken this relationship substantially forward," read a statement issued by the MEA. India-Central Asia Summit at leaders' level is the highest level of engagement between India and Central Asia. The inaugural Summit was held virtually in January 2022 and marked a pivotal step in strengthening India's ties with the region. It was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and attended by the Presidents of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The Summit adopted the 'Delhi Declaration', institutionalising biennial summits and regular ministerial dialogues. As many as four Central Asian Countries, except Turkmenistan, are also fellow members of SCO, Asia Cooperation Dialogue and CICA. All the CACs support India's permanent membership in a reformed and expanded UN Security Council besides generally supporting India's candidates in the elections to UN bodies. India shares historical and cultural linkages with the Central Asian Countries (CACs) going back several millennia. Buddhism spread from India via Tibet to Central Asia, establishing strong spiritual ties. Indian monks founded monasteries and translated texts across Central Asia. Key Buddhist sites like Termiz, Fayaz Tepe, Kara Tepe, and Adzhina Tepe reflect this influence. Later, historians such as Ibn Batuta and Al-Biruni documented vibrant exchanges. Indian migrants brought cotton, spices, and Buddhism to cultural centers like Samarkand and Bukhara. Babur, founder of the Mughal Empire was from Ferghana Valley, Uzbekistan. Exchange of goods, peoples, ideas, traditions, cuisines etc. continued between India and the CACs in both directions, until the beginning of colonial era in the 19th century. "The India-Central Asia Dialogue is a manifestation of mutual interest on the part of India and the Central Asian countries to forge even closer, wider and stronger partnership in a spirit of friendship, trust and mutual understanding," the MEA stated.

31,814 tickets in 60 seconds: Indian Railways hits booking record, cracks down on bots
In a landmark moment for Indian Railways, a staggering 31,814 tickets were booked in a single minute on May 22, 2025, setting a new national record and showcasing the strength of its upgraded e-ticketing infrastructure, the government said in a release on Wednesday. The milestone comes on the back of a major digital overhaul aimed at curbing bot-driven, unauthorized bookings and enhancing access for genuine users. ADVERTISEMENT Driven by AI-powered bot mitigation and integration with a top-tier Content Delivery Network (CDN), the revamped system has significantly slashed unfair booking practices that previously plagued the high-demand Tatkal window. Bot traffic—often constituting nearly half of login attempts during peak times—has now been effectively neutralized, allowing legitimate users a fairer shot at securing tickets. The crackdown has already yielded dramatic results. As part of its ongoing anti-fraud measures, Indian Railways has deactivated over 2.5 crore suspicious user IDs. These accounts, many of them linked to agents misusing automated tools, were flagged through AI-based monitoring bots hijacked the booking windows within seconds. Now, with real-time detection and mitigation in place, that loophole has been closed, the release further discourage misuse, the Railways has introduced new user protocols based on Aadhaar verification. Users authenticated via Aadhaar can book Tatkal, Premium Tatkal, or Opening Advance Reservation Period (ARP) tickets immediately. Others must wait three days after registration to do so. ADVERTISEMENT The tech revamp is clearly driving results. In FY 2024–25: Average daily user logins rose by 19.5% to 82.57 lakh (from 69.08 lakh the previous year). Daily ticket bookings grew by 11.85%. E-ticketing now accounts for 86.38% of all reserved ticket bookings, indicating a massive shift toward digital adoption. The systemic upgrades include: ADVERTISEMENT 87% of static content now served via CDN, improving page load times and reducing strain on central servers. AI-driven bot detection for real-time fraud prevention. A direct complaint redressal mechanism via the Cyber Crime Portal for users facing suspicious activity. HAL refutes report of stalled GE414 engine deal, says negotiations on track
Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) on Wednesday refuted reports that claimed negotiations between HAL and General Electric (GE) for the local production of GE414 engines have stalled. HAL, in a statement, made it clear that the report was factually incorrect and misleading. "An online article has inaccurately reported that negotiations between HAL and General Electric (GE) for the local production of GE414 engines have stalled, suggesting that HAL is now in talks with another engine manufacturer," the HAL statement read. "HAL would like to clarify that this report is factually incorrect and misleading." HAL reiterates that negotiations with GE are on track and progressing well, and that HAL is not in talks with any other company regarding engines for LCA MK2. In June 2023, HAL and GE Aerospace had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to produce fighter jet engines for the Indian Air Force. The agreement was signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official state visit to the United States and it was a key element in strengthening defense cooperation between the two countries. The agreement included the potential joint production of GE Aerospace's F414 engines in India. The MoU was part of the Indian Air Force's Light Combat Aircraft Mk2 program. GE Aerospace has operated in India for more than four decades with wide engagement in the industry including engines, avionics, services, engineering, manufacturing, and local sourcing.
