Will Lionel Messi be suspended for skipping MLS All-Star Game? Inter Miami update

USA Today3 days ago
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba practiced with Inter Miami for the first time this week, coach Javier Mascherano said, before their highly anticipated match against first-place FC Cincinnati on Saturday, July 26.
Inter Miami is still awaiting whether Messi and Alba could face a one-game suspension for skipping the MLS All-Star Game in Austin, Texas earlier this week.
Alba, who suffered a knock and was a late substitution in Inter Miami's 5-1 win against the New York Red Bulls on July 19, may have a better excuse to avoid suspension than Messi, who Mascherano said has felt the fatigue from an overworked schedule in recent weeks.
'He showed normal fatigue from the number of games and minutes he's been playing,' Mascherano said of Messi before a training session on Friday, July 25.
'Look, players always have [minor injuries], especially when they play every three days. But luckily, he'll be back [Friday].
'Let's hope he can train with the group so we can count on both of them for [Saturday's] game. We haven't received any notification so far.'
Messi has played every minute in 22 of 23 matches since April 2, with his lone absence in a 4-3 loss at home to FC Dallas on April 27.
Since Inter Miami's first match in the FIFA Club World Cup on June 14, Messi has played nine matches in a 35-day span without missing a minute.
Messi's absence in the MLS All-Star Game garnered much of the attention surrounding the league's annual showcase.
'Miami has had a schedule that is unlike any other team. Most of our teams had a 10-day break. Miami hasn't. We had Leo playing 90 minutes in almost all the games that he's played. We have to manage through that as a league. [At] the same time, we do have rules, and we have to manage through that as well,' MLS commissioner Don Garber said during his midseason press conference before the All-Star Game.
'So, we would have loved to have Leo here. We'd have loved to have every player that was selected for the All-Star team here. And after this All-Star Game, we'll figure out what needs to happen this weekend.'
Inter Miami's match against FC Cincinnati, which beat them 3-0 on July 16, could again pit Messi, the 2024 MLS MVP, against Evander, a leading candidate along with Messi for 2025 MVP award.
Cincinnati sits atop the MLS Supporters' Shield standings with 48 points, while Inter Miami is fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 41 points. Inter Miami has three games in hand to play this season due to their congested schedule.
Cincinnati coach Pat Noonan told reporters he expects Messi and Alba to not play, but also has not received confirmation on the issue.
'I don't necessarily know that we need clarity. There [are] rules. I'm aware of those,' Noonan said. 'We're under the impression that we'll prepare for the game without those two available.'
How to watch Messi, Inter Miami vs. FC Cincinnati match?
The match on Saturday, July 26 will be played at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. It will be available to live stream on MLS Season Pass via Apple TV.

Lakers jersey history No. 1 — Caron Butler

Through the 2024-25 season, the Los Angeles Lakers have had a total of 506 players suit up for them, going back to their days in Minneapolis. Some were forgettable, some were serviceable, some were good and a select few were flat-out legendary. As the Lakers approach their 80th season of existence (they were founded back in 1946 as the Detroit Gems in the National Basketball League), LeBron Wire is taking a look at each player who has worn their jersey, whether it has been a purple and gold one or the ones they donned back in the Midwest during their early years. Here's a look back at Caron Butler, who spent one fairly productive season with the Lakers. In 2004, the Lakers organization was turned upside-down. It seemed that the franchise had to choose between Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, and it chose the latter by trading O'Neal to the Miami Heat and signing Kobe Bryant to a new contract. At the time, the decision was widely ridiculed, especially given Bryant's personal flaws and tarnished public reputation. All Los Angeles was able to get in return for O'Neal was Butler, Lamar Odom and Brian Grant. Butler, the No. 10 pick in the 2002 NBA Draft, had just embarked on what would become a relatively productive pro career, and he was a stocky 6-foot-7 forward who could finish strong at the rim, help on the boards and occasionally hit from the outside. Butler became the second-leading scorer on the Lakers during the 2004-05 season, averaging 15.5 points a game. During that turbulent season, which was marked by injuries to key players and the midseason resignation of coach Rudy Tomjanovich, who had replaced the departed Phil Jackson, Butler was one constant. The forward appeared in 77 games and developed a friendship with Bryant during a time when Bryant likely felt he couldn't trust anyone. The Lakers missed the playoffs that year, and that offseason, Butler was sent packing in a trade that brought them big man Kwame Brown, who was quite possibly the biggest draft bust in NBA history. He was now a member of the Washington Wizards, where he became his best self by making the All-Star team during the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons. He later found himself with the Dallas Mavericks as a result of a trade that took place during the 2009-10 season. Although he suffered a season-ending ruptured patellar tendon in January 2011, he was a member of the Mavericks team that won the NBA championship that season, and he averaged a solid 15.0 points a game prior to his injury. After brief stints with five other teams, Butler announced he was retiring in February 2018. He ended his career with averages of 14.1 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals a game.

File Photo by Aaron Josefczyk/UPI | License Photo July 28 (UPI) -- Cleveland Guardians pitcher Emmanuel Clase was placed on non-disciplinary paid leave amid an MLB sports betting investigation, the league announced Monday. "Per an agreement with the MLBPA, Cleveland Guardians pitcher Emmanuel Clase has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave through games on Aug. 31 while MLB continues its sports betting investigation," the league said in a statement. The 27-year-old is the second Guardians pitcher placed on leave amid the probe, joining starter Luis Ortiz. MLB announced earlier this month that Ortiz's leave was extended through Aug. 31. Clase, 27, earned his 24th save of the season in the Guardians' 6-4 win over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday in Kansas City, Mo. The three-time All-Star was 5-3 with a 3.23 ERA over his first 48 appearances this season. Clase led the American League in saves in 2022, 2023 and 2024. He was 4-2 with a career-best 0.61 ERA over 74 appearances in 2024, when he totaled a career-high 47 saves. Clase led MLB with 42 and 44 saves, respectively, in 2022 and 2023. The right-handed relief pitcher went 21-26 with a 1.88 ERA and 182 saves through the first seven years of his career. He was suspended for 80 games -- the entire season -- in 2020 for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug. The Guardians (52-53) sit in second place in the American League Central, eight games behind the division-leading Detroit Tigers (61-46). They will host the MLB-worst Colorado Rockies (27-78) at 6:40 p.m. EDT Monday in Cleveland.
