With the increasing number of EVs on New Zealand's roads, Contact Energy (Contact) is looking to ease pressure on the national electricity grid. This could also help EV drivers reduce the cost of charging their vehicles in the long-term.
According to the Electric Vehicle Database's market stats, at the end of April 2025 more than 82,500 fully electric vehicles and 37,300 plug-in hybrids were in use in New Zealand.
Charging an EV can increase a household's energy use by up to 30 percent says Powerswitch2. This can put a strain on the national electricity grid during periods of high energy demand, such as first thing in the morning or in the evening.
To help reduce this, Contact is piloting an EV Demand Flex programme. This will use technology to determine when energy demand is low and then automatically charge customers' EVs. If there is a sudden increase in electricity demand, the technology will stop charging the vehicle until demand subsides.
There are many benefits to this pilot, explains Contact's Acting Chief Retail Officer Michael Robertson.
'At scale, this technology would allow customers to charge their vehicles when demand is low, potentially helping them make savings on their power bill. It will also help ease pressure on the national grid, support New Zealand's energy supply, and reduce reliance on energy generated by fossil fuels,' says Michael.
'Pausing charging an EV, even for a short period of time, contributes to reducing high electricity demand, ensuring electricity goes where it is most needed. It's hard to predict on any given day when there will be an increase in energy demand and that's what makes the EV Demand Flex technology so innovative.
'Plus, our customers can rest easy knowing their EV will be charged to the level they want, ready for when they need it,' says Michael
The pilot begins on Tuesday 3 June and may run up to a year. This will deliver valuable information about people's charging behaviours and enable Contact to finetune the EV Flex programme. If the pilot is successful, Contact will expand the programme.
The EV Demand Flex pilot will run in addition to Contact's Hot Water Sorter programme, launched in April 2024. So far this has helped 14,000 Kiwi households to reduce their energy usage by turning their hot water cylinders off during peak hours.
For the last four years Contact has also been offering 'Good' time of use electricity plans. These plans provide free power during times of low demand, such as at night or at the weekend, rewarding customers for taking pressure off the grid. More than 130,000 Contact customers are on one of the Good Plan range, and these customers have collectively benefited from 215 million hours of free power.

Z Energy launches Z Rewards offering new loyalty incentives
Z Energy has launched a new loyalty programme called Z Rewards in partnership with Eagle Eye, a loyalty SaaS and AI technology provider. The Z Rewards scheme allows customers to earn points on almost all transactions at Z sites, ranging from fuel purchases to food, coffee and EV charging. Points accumulated through the programme can be redeemed for a range of in-store items. Customers have access to Z Rewards via the Z App, which provides a minimum of 6 cents off per litre, up to 100 litres, each day. Under the scheme, users receive one point for every dollar spent on fuel, and two points for every dollar spent in-store or on EV charging. With 500 points, customers are eligible for rewards such as coffee, pies, sausage rolls and cans of energy drink. During the programme's March launch, participating customers were offered 20 cents off per litre on their first three fills, each up to 100 litres, a complimentary barista-made drink and an instant bonus of 300 points. The programme also offers a referral scheme, providing members with an additional 300 bonus points for each friend they refer. Bronwyn Barberel, Head of Loyalty at Z Energy, described a positive reception to the launch, citing significant uptake among customers using the Z App to access Z Rewards since its rollout. "Z Energy launched our new loyalty programme, Z Rewards, as a way to better recognise and reward loyal customers for more of their spend at Z, beyond fuel," she said. "We've seen thousands more customers download and use the Z App to access Z Rewards since it launched, and it's been great seeing them all collect points and get treats. We have heard plenty of positive feedback from customers – and so far, Z pies have been the top choice of treat for our customers who've taken advantage of this part of our offer. We've had some great new pies on offer. "We are excited about the future of Z Rewards and remain committed to giving our customers an excellent loyalty offer." Andy Baird, General Manager for Customer at Z Energy, said the broadening of the loyalty programme beyond fuel reflects the company's evolving business focus. "The evolution of the Z service station means along with providing fuel for customers, we are continuing to grow our network of EV charging stations at selected Z sites, and expand our grocery and convenience offers in-store," he said. "It's important, therefore, that our loyalty offer evolves with us. Z Rewards does just that – offering customers points for almost all of their spend at Z, from fuel to food and coffee, through to EV charging." Jonathan Reeve, Vice President for APAC at Eagle Eye, noted the partnership with Z Energy is timely within the context of global changes in fuel and convenience loyalty programmes. EV Battery Fires Expose New Zealand Regulatory Gap

In the wake of the Wairau Valley blaze — where lithium batteries may have contributed to the scale of destruction — the Imported Motor Vehicle Industry Association (VIA) is renewing its call for national standards governing the reuse and recycling of electric vehicle (EV) batteries. A new industry report investigates concerns around battery end-of-life management in Aotearoa. It finds that while a growing number of businesses are repurposing and recycling EV batteries, they are doing so without formal safety standards, oversight, or ownership rules. 'We're putting lithium batteries into the community at scale, but we don't have a clear plan for what happens when they reach the end of their life,' says VIA Chief Executive Greig Epps. No standards, no certainty The sector report, authored by VIA Technical Lead Malcolm Yorston, shows that battery handling practices vary widely across the country. Some operators use Korean and aviation-grade standards for testing and fire containment, but these are imported workarounds — not a substitute for locally approved systems. Recyclers and refurbishers face additional complexity due to inconsistent battery chemistries, opaque supply chains, and restrictions on access to diagnostic software. Many operate in good faith, but in the absence of formal guidance, even responsible actors are exposed to legal and insurance risks. Some insurers have already begun withdrawing coverage for second-life battery installations, especially in residential settings. The stakes are rising as EV uptake accelerates. Batteries from vehicles imported ten years ago are now reaching end-of-life — and more are arriving each year. VIA's report notes that while local operators collaborate where possible, including partnerships between refurbishers and certified recyclers, there is still no domestic facility capable of extracting lithium or other critical materials at scale. Three steps the government should take now Establish national standards and a battery registry VIA is calling for a comprehensive set of EV battery handling and reuse standards tailored to New Zealand conditions, along with a centralised battery tracking system to ensure end-to-end accountability. Define battery ownership at end-of-life Without clear rules, uncertainty over who is responsible for a used battery creates gaps in compliance, handling, and insurance. VIA says this lack of clarity puts consumers and recyclers at risk. Fund safe infrastructure and training Businesses need investment in safe storage facilities, handling equipment, and certified training pathways. VIA also sees a role for the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) in funding sector development and supporting long-term recovery capabilities. The report also highlights viable international models New Zealand could adapt, including the EU's battery lifecycle regulations and Chinese specifications for second-life battery use. These could form the basis for co-designed local guidance in partnership with industry, recyclers, OEMs, and insurers. The fire at Abilities Group may not yet be officially attributed to lithium batteries, but the industry says the pattern is clear. In the absence of national direction, battery-related risks are falling through the cracks. 'There's already a network of businesses doing this work, and doing it with integrity,' says Epps. 'But if we don't act now, we'll keep putting lives and property at risk — and we'll miss the opportunity to build a safe and sustainable battery recovery system.'
