Omdia: OLED Display Shipments Surpass TFT LCD for the First Time, Capturing 51% Market Share in 2024

AMOLED display shipments for smartphones continued to rise in 2024, surpassing TFT LCD shipments and driven by strong demand for flexible AMOLEDs, according to Omdia's latest OLED Display Market Tracker.

The global smartphone display market grew 7% year-over-year (YoY) in 2024, reaching 1.55 billion units, marking its second consecutive year of growth. Total AMOLED display shipments roses to 784 million units, a 26% YoY increase, while TFT LCD shipments declined to 761 million units, an 8% YoY decrease. As result, AMOLED display shipments surpassed TFT LCD shipments for the first time, accounting for 51% of total smartphone display shipments in 2024.
Since the second half of 2022, Chinese display makers have significantly reduced the prices of flexible AMOLED panels. since This has led to major smartphone OEMs to upgrade mid-range smartphone screens, which traditionally use rigid AMLED and LTPS TFT LCD panels, to flexible AMOLEDs. This display replacement trend has continued in 2024, driving flexible AMOLED's market share up from 28% of the total smartphone display market in 2022 to 40% in 2024.
Chinese display makers' AMOLED display shipments increased by 45% YoY in 2024, compared to 2023 enabled by the rapid market expansion of Chinese local smartphone OEMs. As a result, their AMOLED display shipment share continued to rise reaching 45% of total AMOLED smartphone display shipments. Meanwhile, Korean display makers' shipment saw their. Market share continue decline. Instead, they focused on the premium segment supplyin Apple and Samsung which offer more stable demand and higher-margin products.
According to Brian Huh, Senior Analyst in Omdia's Display research practice, 'AMOLED display shipments for smartphones are expected to continue growing in 2025 due to strong demand from Apple including the launch of the new iPhone SE launch, as well as ongoing AMOELD adoption by Android OEMs replacing TFT LCDs. Additionally, Chinese display makers are expected to further increase their market share, leveraging their strong supply chain relationships with local smartphone brands.'

This one iPadOS 26 feature has me excited for the iPhone Fold

Samsung is set to launch the seventh generation of its Galaxy Z Fold book-style folding phone this Summer, but its biggest rival is yet to show its folding phone hand. Apple has long been expected to unveil an iPhone Fold, and the latest rumors suggest that it will launch next year. I've used almost every folding phone released globally, with some exceptions for extremely obscure ones. While I've always been curious what an iPhone Fold would look like, I was fairly certain that Apple shouldn't build it, as I wasn't sure they could deliver on one necessary feature. Recommended Videos This past week, Apple unveiled the next update to its platforms during its WWDC 2025 keynote. Alongside a new naming convention that unites all platform names, including iOS 26, watchOS26, and macOS 26 Tahoe, there's a new iPadOS 26 that transforms the iPad. It's the biggest update to the iPad in years, and it brings a long-awaited feature that not only transforms the iPad but has me excited for Apple's rumored iPhone Fold. What makes a good folding phone? I've used the majority of the best folding phones released worldwide, including many that were only available in China. The best book-style folding phones — i.e., the ones that aim to compete with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 — all provide one necessary feature in some form: multitasking. Samsung has been perfecting multitasking on its phones for over a decade, and Android has natively supported multiwindow since Android 7 in 2016. Multitasking is key to the folding phone experience as it ensures you can take full advantage of the additional screen real estate offered by the larger internal display. Unlike the best flip phones, which make a regular-sized smartphone smaller, these folding phones allow you to go from a regular smartphone to a tablet-sized display, so you need to be able to run multiple apps at once. Google added optimizations and support to take advantage of the big displays on folding phones in Android 12L two years ago. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 can run three apps side by side and launch more in pop-up chat windows. The Oppo Find N5 and OnePlus Open feature the innovative Open Canvas multitasking system that visualizes your apps in windows larger than the physical screen. Each of these phones has a way to ensure that the big display is something you can truly take advantage of, and until iPadOS 26, it was a feature that Apple was sorely lacking. How iPadOS 26 solves the multitasking problem No, iOS 26 does not add multitasking, but iPadOS 26 finally showcases a clear vision for big screens, and in doing so, Apple has also shown it's ready to build a folding phone that can compete with the best. For many years, the iPad has offered basic split-screen multitasking features, but iPadOS 26 adds a new windowing engine designed to replicate a desktop computer experience. Instead of simple features, we have resizable windows that can be set to different presets or resized freely using the handles in the bottom corner. The experience will be instantly familiar to anyone who's used a desktop computer, and it's far more intuitive than any other tablet, aside from the best Windows tablets. Of course, the iPhone Fold is not an iPad, but this has already transformed how productive I am on the iPad Pro 11. It has the potential to do the same for the iPhone Fold and how useful — and therefore, how desirable and profitable — it is to end customers. What could this mean for an iPhone Fold? There's a fairly obvious solution for the eventual iPhone Fold: Apple brings the same feature from iPadOS to iOS 27 next year, just in time for the iPhone Fold. However, I think there's a way for Apple to transform the folding phone experience at the same time. One of the biggest challenges with most folding phones is that, while they offer excellent multitasking features, many Android apps are not optimized, and it's still like using a large phone, versus a small tablet. Apple could solve this by running iOS on the front screen and a modified version of iPadOS on the internal screen. Not only would it be unique in the world of folding phones, it would solve the biggest issues and instantly make the iPhone Fold a new benchmark for others to match. Whether the company does this or not, the multitasking features in iPadOS 26 have me excited to see what Apple can do on the iPhone Fold. The company's first entrant into folding phones will almost certainly change the market, and its approach to iPadOS 26 has me convinced that it can build an experience that's second to none.

I rolled over my 401(k) and was taxed and charged a penalty. What happened?

I rolled over my 401(k) last year and my company automatically withheld $15,000 for taxes. I got the remainder (about $60,000) into my IRA way ahead of the 60-day deadline, but my accountant insists that I owe a $1,500 penalty because of the withholding. That doesn't seem right or fair. What can I do about this? —Ticked off in Tempe My husband is in hospice care. Friends say his children are lining up for his money. What can I do? These defense stocks offer the best growth prospects, as the Israel-Iran conflict fuels new interest in the sector Walmart's stock looks like it's in trouble. What the chart says may come next. 'He failed in his fiduciary duty': My brother liquidated our mother's 401(k) for her nursing home. He claimed the rest. My mother-in-law thought the world's richest man needed Apple gift cards. How on Earth could she fall for this scam? This happens often in part because the terminology is confusing. Unfortunately, unless an exception applies, I don't think you can do anything about it if you were under age 59½ at the time the money came out of the 401(k). If you were over age 59½ the penalty should not apply but there is still a tax consequence. Nonetheless, you can prevent this from happening again with future rollovers. If a distribution is deposited into another plan or IRA within 60 days of receipt, there is no tax. The default for 401(k)s and some other retirement plans is to withhold 20% for taxes from distributions out of the plan. This is called 'mandatory withholding,' but it is not truly mandatory as I'll discuss in a bit. (Note this 20% withholding regime does not apply to distributions out of IRAs.) Read: I transferred company stock out of an old 401(k). Now I'm worried I'm facing a nasty tax surprise. What I suspect happened here is that the plan distributed $75,000 but only $60,000 got to the IRA because $15,000 went to Uncle Sam via withholding. The $15,000 withheld was therefore distributed, but not rolled over. Any portion of the distributed amount that are not redeposited in time becomes taxable income and the 10% penalty will apply if you are under 59½. Look closely at your return and you should see $15,000 of taxable income included on Line 5b. Not only are you subject to the penalty, you paid income tax on that $15,000, too. The taxes and penalty could have been avoided if you had deposited $15,000 from other funds in the IRA within the 60-day window. The easiest way to avoid this in the future is to do rollovers as 'direct' rollovers, also called 'direct transfers' or 'trustee to trustee transfers.' Direct rollovers enable a transfer with no tax withholding, so all the funds end up in the receiving account. Rolling over funds this way eliminates the issues with both the 60-day clock and the once per 12-month rules that apply to indirect IRA to IRA rollovers. With a direct rollover the check will not be payable to you. Instead, it will be made payable to the receiving firm and account even if it is mailed to you. These checks would read something like 'Payable to XYZ company FBO (for benefit of) the John Doe IRA.' Though the 20% withholding is described as 'mandatory' 401(k) plans must offer the option to perform rollovers as direct transfers with no withholding. 'I am getting very frustrated': My mother's adviser has not returned my calls. He manages $1 million. Is this normal? I'm in my 80s and have 2 kids. How do I choose between them to be my executor? Gundlach says gold is no longer for lunatics as the bond king says wait to buy the 30-year 'It might be another Apple or Microsoft': My wife invested $100K in one stock and it exploded 1,500%. Do we sell? 'I was pushed out of her life when she was 18': My estranged daughter, 29, misuses drugs. Should I leave her my Roth IRA?
