1 49ers draft pick may not be ready for start of training camp
The San Francisco 49ers selected University of Indiana quarterback Kurtis Rourke with the 227th overall pick in this year's draft with an eye toward the team's future behind QB Brock Purdy.
Rourke is 6-4, 220 pounds and has an NFL-caliber arm. Whether the ultimately develops into an NFL-caliber signal caller remains to be seen, and that development may have to wait awhile.
The 49ers selected Rourke knowing he's on his way back from an ACL tear he sustained in 2022 and had surgically repaired after the 2024 season when he threw for a career-high 29 touchdowns. That knee surgery is likely to keep Rourke from making any immediate contributions.
"Know he did it the whole year with a, he had a broken finger, a torn ACL and still was really, really impressive," 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said in his post-draft press conference. "And we're in a situation where getting a guy with a torn ACL and he probably won't be cleared by training camp, but it'll be close. It's not an issue for us right now. But obviously, with [QB] Brock [Purdy] and [QB] Mac [Jones] and love [QB] Tanner [Mordecai] too, so I thought it was just a very good valuable pick for us, for a guy who might not be ready for another year, because I think he's about seven-months out because he got it done after the season. But we're in a situation where we could take him and I think he would've gone a lot higher if he was healthy.'
We speculated after the pick that Rourke may be on track to work in as a third QB this year with an eye toward a long-term backup role behind Purdy. That may be put on hold for the entire 2025 season as he works his way back, but that won't disqualify him from at least competing for a backup job in 2026.
Mordecai, a 2024 undrafted rookie, spent all of last year on the practice squad. Jones is on a one-year deal. The backup QB job will be open next season which may be just in time for Rourke to step in and make his mark as a pro.

Bengals player goes on ESPN, talks Hendrickson and Stewart
Despite the hype of the national drama around the Cincinnati Bengals for the contract holdouts of Trey Hendrickson and first-rounder Shemar Stewart, other players have not sounded all that concerned about the situations. Bengals offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr. is the latest to provide such an example. He recently appeared on ESPN and fielded a question about the contract holdouts and how they might impact the team and those infamous slow starts from the last few years. Advertisement RELATED: Bengals, Shemar Stewart nuclear option includes 2026 NFL draft route In short, Brown revealed that Bengals players have been in plenty of contact with both Hendrickson and Stewart. He stressed and echoed the comments of Joe Burrow and others who point out that there is a business side to the sport that they all understand. As Bengals fans know by now, Hendrickson wants a long-term deal and is threatening to hold out into the summer, at least. Stewart doesn't want to be the first to get new team language in contracts about the voidance of guarantees, at least reportedly. The vibe from Brown, though, is similar to other players asked lately: these situations aren't as big as the outside world makes them out to be…yet. Matt Leinart was "so embarrassed" as his career ended after five days with the Bills
Matt Leinart was a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback at USC and a Top 10 NFL draft pick, but his pro career didn't amount to much. And he says the way his career ended was particularly tough for him. Leinart played for the Cardinals from 2006 to 2009, the Texans in 2010 and 2011, and the Raiders in 2012. Then the Bills signed him in the 2013 preseason, put him on the field for one bad game, and cut him after five days. He said recently on his Throwbacks podcast that final preseason game in Buffalo was particularly difficult to live with. 'My last game in Buffalo, preseason Game 4, I threw three interceptions in the first half,' Leinart said. 'I stood on that sideline like someone passed away in my family. I kept my helmet on so no one could see my face. I was embarrassed. I didn't cry, I was so embarrassed that that was going to be my last time ever on a football field. I just knew it.' Leinart said that in only five days in Buffalo, he came to admire the passionate Bills fan base and felt badly that he couldn't give them anything to cheer for. 'The sad part is they were so fired up that I was there, they were like, 'Yeah! Revive your career here!' I was like, 'Guys, they need an arm,'' Leinart said. 'I saw firsthand Buffalo, Bills Mafia, how awesome their fans were. They treated me great for the first couple days. That's why I was like, 'I love Buffalo.''

Nico Raskin alarm bells ring at Rangers amid 49ers transfer masterplan as Aston Villa talks 'start'
Rangers new owners shouldn't cash in on Nicolas Raskin to fund their transfer plans this summer. That's according to Ibrox legend Stuart McCall - who hopes the Belgian international can remain in Glasgow amid reports of talks with Aston Villa. Advertisement Andrew Cavenagh and his partners from the San Francisco 49ers completed their £75million takeover earlier this summer and immediately announced plans to plough another £20million into the Ibrox coffers. READ MORE: Max Aarons to Rangers sees major update 'emerge' as Bournemouth make transfer stance known READ MORE: Lyall Cameron offers inside track on Rangers revolution and the project that will 'win leagues' CEO Patrick Stewart has already promised new boss Russell Martin he'll be handed a significant chunk of the substantial eight-figure sum to bring in recruits. However, the scale of the rebuild required for Rangers to close the gap on Celtic could see the club cash-in on their prize assets - with Raskin leading the valuations after establishing himself as a mainstay of the Belgian national side. Advertisement Het Nieuwsblad report that a potential Scottish Premiership departure is escalating for the 24-year-old with Aston Villa. It is claimed that talks between the Premier League side and the player's entourage "have already started" with a deal depending on "the negotiations between the clubs and the ambitions of Raskin himself." With the World Cup rapidly approaching, it is also noted that Belgium boss Rudi Garcia "welcomes" the move as he wants to see Raskin form a "close bond" with Villa stars Youri Tielemans and Amadou Onana. But McCall has urged the owners to proceed with caution over a player he previously scouted while working at Sheffield United. Advertisement He told the Sunday Post: "I really like watching Raskin play for Rangers every time I see him because he gives everything he's got - and he's a good player. "Raskin ticks the box of a good character to me. I don't know him personally but I watched him before he went to Rangers. "At Sheffield United, our head of recruitment asked me to take a look at Raskin. I watched him in a few games and liked what I saw. He wants to be in there fighting. "I saw him having that wee niggle at Callum McGregor in one of the Old Firm games. He's never happy to accept a defeat. Nick Walsh speaks to Nicolas Raskin and Callum McGregor -Credit:SNS Group "Every game has got to hurt you if it doesn't go well for Rangers. From my point of view - and as a Rangers supporter watching him - I'd definitely love him to be in our dressing room for the next few years. Advertisement "Recruitment is going to be massive again this summer. You have a lot of fringe players who have been brought to the club who, really, mentality-wise have been wide of the mark. "It's OK having good players but the bottom line is you need more than that to play for Rangers and win titles. "Good players who are excellent characters will take you a long way. And you know you're getting that from Raskin."
