Arklow Sailing Club's new training vessel to develop more ‘women at the helm'

Commissioned by B.J Marine, the Beneteau First 27 training boat was recently sailed from Greystones and delivered by club members to Arklow, where they were greeted by the seaside town's new RNLI lifeboat along with and club members boats out on Arklow Bay and escorted up the Avoca River to Arklow Marina where it will be berthed.
Mainly funded by the National Lottery, with support from the Sports Capital Programme and a contribution from Arklow Sailing Club, commodore Seamus Cramer and vice commodore Patrick Russell said that their grant application under the Capital Sports Equipment Grant grew from an idea within the committee to promote the idea of an Equal Sailing Opportunities Development Programme.
'The goal of the project was to procure a sail training vessel to develop our women at the helm and develop sailing as a sport within the community,' Seamus said.
'The goal of the project was to procure a sail training vessel to develop our women at the helm and develop sailing as a sport within the community,' Seamus said.
'This new boat alongside our other sail training boat will help us develop female skippers and encourage women and junior skippers to take the helm, as well as encourage participation in regional and national races/regattas.
'We would like to extend a big thank you to all at the National Lottery and Sports Capital Programme and all of our committee for their work on this project.
'Also, a big thank you to all at Arklow Marina for providing a berth for the boat and John Doyle, Dolco Engineering Arklow, for supplying a Berthing Pack for the boat.
'Both Patrick and I agree that the new training boat will enhance the future for the sport of sailing in Arklow.'

But the 51-year-old is now hoping for some happier times with his two children after scooping the massive prize. Paul filmed the moment he broke the news to his son in a beautiful video. As he made his big reveal, the two were seen laughing hysterically and jumping around the kitchen for joy Advertisement Paul recalled: 'I wanted to tell the kids in person so when my son got home I set up my phone to record it." And after an agonising wait for them to get home from school, he got his dream moment. Paul said: "How many millionaires do you know?" And his bewildered son replied "zero". Advertisement It was then Paul said "Well you do now" as he pulled his son into a warm embrace. Paul recalled: "I added 'I swear on my life'! I do like to joke but when I say those words, my kids know to take it seriously! "Their reactions were hilarious and heart-warming. We all feel ridiculously excited and relieved in equal measure. It just doesn't seem real!' Paul has always prioritised his two children and their needs above everything and now plans some special time together to create new memories, starting with a family holiday to Greece. Advertisement The dad explained: 'Life hasn't always been easy, but the kids mean the world to me, and they always come first. "We have never been away abroad together, and I would love to take them both to Greece. But first we need to get our passports!" As well as a dream holiday together, Paul wants to buy his daughter a second-hand car, a Fiat 500, so she can learn to drive. He also hopes to help them kickstart their careers as they both near the end of full-time education. Advertisement Paul said: 'I am so proud of what the kids have achieved already in life. They both have big ideas about what they want to do when they leave school, and I cannot wait to help them in their chosen careers. 'It's the important stuff like helping them to learn to drive and getting them a car and insurance so they can get to college and then work. "My daughter has a driving test later this year and I would love to get her a second-hand Fiat 500 for her to practice in.' Paul confesses that he didn't realise he had bagged the life-changing win for a whole week. Advertisement He checked his National Lottery account as normal after the EuroMillions draw on July 4 to find he had won £5 plus a free Lucky Dip ticket. But it wasn't until a week later that he got an unexpected email from The National Lottery urging him to check his account again and to get in touch urgently. Paul was suspicious and didn't want to get ahead of himself; 'It didn't look like the normal email I get. "I thought this must be a scam. I read the email again and then Googled the National Lottery Line where I saw the telephone numbers matched. Advertisement "It was then that I allowed myself to get much more excited!'

Tánaiste Simon Harris to visit Wexford for sod-turning of Sports Hub – ‘It is a significant investment'

The state-of-the-art Sports Hub has been in the works for a number of years, but has been repeatedly delayed much to the frustration of residents and councillors. The source of the delay was the long drawn out process between the multiple groups working on the plans and tender, with speculation by Senator Cathal Byrne that the plan has become too ambitious for the €600,000 funding it received. "I was chair of the district when the first €300,000 was awarded and then went out to tender. I think the project became a bit more ambitious and I think we received another €300,000 in a second round of government funding,' he explained. The initial funding of €300,000 was sourced in 2019 under the government's Sports Capital Programme and has since received further allocated funding under the Large-Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF). However, the visit by the Tánaiste and Minister for Sport Patrick Donovan signals positive progress for the project. Constructed in 2015, Phase One of Enniscorthy Sports Hub was developed at a cost of €1 million, following an investment of €850,000 by Wexford County Council and a supporting grant of €150,000. Phase One works consisted of an all-weather, eight-lane world-class running track and in-field facility together with extensive floodlighting and car-parking facilities. The sod turning event on Saturday, August 8 will mark the progress on Phase Two which will see a club building built with various amenities. "It is fantastic for Enniscorthy. It will make it possible for the town to host regional championships. Plus all of the current users will have much-needed access to toilets, changing rooms, and facilities. It is quite a significant investment so I asked Deputy Harris and Minister for Sport Patrick O'Donovan to come down and they accepted the invitation,' he added.

Kerry GAA heroes honoured at summer ‘Flesk Fest' event

Among the line up was recalling memories of the 25th anniversary of the 2000 Kerry millennium team, captained by local stalwart Seamus Moynihan. Seamus was the Man of the Match in the replay win over Galway. Top of the bill was the 50th anniversary of Kerry's historic 1975 treble of senior, minor and U21 titles – a haul that laid the foundations for a glorious period in Kerry that lasted until 1987. The great Kerry ladies from 1982 to 1990 were honoured for their incredible record. The Kingdom's ladies were a dominant force in football led by the legendary Mary Jo Curran from Beaufort – holder of 10 All-Ireland medals and 10 All-Stars. Recently retired Kerry star Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh from Corca Dhuibhne was in attendance to discuss her glorious career that was capped with a senior All-Ireland medal in 2024. "We were very happy with how the event went. It was great to see such a fantastic line up of some of the most successful players to wear the green and gold. The GAA evening was part of another brilliant Flesk Fest. Great credit is owed to all the organisers and volunteers,' said Sean Daly.
