BELMONT, Mich. (AP) — Carlota Ciganda birdied the final two holes to win the Meijer LPGA Classic for her first LPGA Tour victory in more than 8 1/2 years, while Lexi Thompson had two late bogeys to dash her bid to end a long drought of her own.
Ciganda hit to a foot to set up her birdie on the par-4 17th, then made a 4-foot comebacker on the par-5 18th to avoid a playoff with playing partner Hye-Jin Choi.
Part of a six-way tie to start the day at Blythefield County Club, Ciganda shot a 5-under 67 — her fourth straight round in the 60s — to finish at 16-under 272 on the tree-lined layout in the final event before the major KPMG Women's PGA Championship in Texas.
Ciganda won for the first time since the 2016 Lorena Ochoa Invitational, a span of 8 years, 7 months, 2 days. The 35-year-old Spanish player has three LPGA Tour victories and has won eight times on the Ladies European Tour, the last in December in the Spanish Women's Open.
Choi finished with a 68, also shooting in the 60s all four days. Fellow South Korean player Somi Lee was third at 14 under after a 65.
Thompson had a 70 to tie for fourth with Celine Boutier (67) and Nanna Koerstz Madsen (70). Thompson, the 2015 winner at Blythefield, won the last of her 11 LPGA Tour titles in June 2019.

Fans who hung effigy of Vinícius Júnior from a bridge convicted of hate crime in Spain
MADRID (AP) — A Spanish court has convicted four people who hung an effigy of Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior off a highway bridge two years ago, the league said on Monday. The defendants were found guilty of hate crimes after hanging a black figure, with Vinícius' name on it, in the Spanish capital before a Copa del Rey match against rival Atletico Madrid in January 2023. Along with the effigy that was hung by its neck, there was a banner with the words 'Madrid hates Real.' A defendant who disseminated images of the act online was sentenced to 15 months in prison for a hate crime, and seven months for threats. The other three defendants were each sentenced to seven months in prison for hate crimes and seven months for threats. The four of them must complete a training program on equal treatment and non-discrimination to have their prison sentences suspended. All were also fined and prohibited from coming within 1,000 meters (3,200 feet) of Vinícius, his residence and Madrid's training center. They also can't get within 1,000 meters of soccer stadiums from four hours before and four hours after matches being organized by the league or the Spanish soccer federation. They were additionally prohibited from having any form of communication with Vinícius for a period of four years from the end of the prison term. Prosecutors had said the four people belonged to a hardcore Atletico fan group that is 'ideologically identified with the extreme right.' All defendants signed a letter of apology addressed to Vinícius, Real Madrid, the Spanish league and the Spanish federation, which led to mitigation for damage reparation. The Spanish league was on the case as a private prosecutor. In May, five Valladolid fans who racially insulted Vinícius in 2022 were found guilty in what the league said at the time was the first ruling in Spain that condemned racist insults in a soccer stadium as a hate crime. Last year, three Valencia fans were handed eight-month prison sentences after pleading guilty to racially insulting Vinícius in a 2023 match, in what had been the first conviction for racism-related cases in professional soccer in Spain, though it was not based on a hate crime. The Valencia fans were convicted of a crime against moral integrity, with the aggravating circumstance of discrimination based on racist motives. ___ AP soccer:

Bournemouth signs left back Truffert from Rennes amid reported imminent exit of Kerkez
BOURNEMOUTH, England (AP) — Bournemouth signed France left back Adrien Truffert from Rennes on Monday, potentially paving the way for Milos Kerkez to leave amid reported interest from Liverpool. The 23-year-old Truffert has joined on a five-year contract after deciding to leave Rennes, where he was the captain. 'It's a dream for any player to play in the Premier League,' Truffert said 'It's one of the best and most competitive leagues in the world. 'I'm looking forward to testing myself at this level, facing top players every week and helping the team achieve great things.' British media have reported that Kerkez is heading to Premier League champion Liverpool, which would continue the breakup of Bournemouth's defense following Dean Huijsen's move to Real Madrid. Belgium-born Truffert won his lone international cap for France as a substitute in a 2-0 loss to Denmark in the Nations League in September 2022. ___ AP soccer:

Shohei Ohtani to make his long-awaited return to the mound in an abbreviated start for the Dodgers
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani is making his Los Angeles Dodgers pitching debut, 643 days after the two-way superstar had elbow surgery. Ohtani will start and pitch an inning or two against the San Diego Padres on Monday night in the series opener. 'He's ready to make his debut on the mound,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Sunday night after the NL West leaders beat San Francisco. The Japanese right-hander has been throwing simulated games recently in preparation for his return while still wielding his powerful bat in the lineup. Typically, pitchers returning from injuries go on minor-league rehab assignments, but Ohtani is an exception. The three-time MVP is batting .290 with 25 homers, which leads the National League, 41 RBIs and 11 stolen bases in the leadoff spot. While Ohtani won't be throwing deep into the game, just his presence on the mound figures to bolster a staff that has been decimated by injuries. The Dodgers have eight starters, including Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell and Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki, and six relievers on the injured list. Since Ohtani is already on the roster as the designated hitter, the Dodgers are essentially adding an extra pitcher without having to make a corresponding roster move. Ohtani helped the Dodgers win their eighth World Series title — and his first — last season, the first of a $700 million, 10-year contract. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. He hasn't pitched since 2023, when he was with the Los Angeles Angels. He had a record of 10-5 with a 3.14 ERA and 167 strikeouts. His last mound appearance was on Aug. 23, 2023, when he got hurt during a start against Cincinnati. He had Tommy John surgery on Oct. 1, 2018, and is recovering from right elbow surgery on Sept. 19, 2023. 'There's been a lot of anticipation,' Roberts said. 'It's good for our team. Our guys are excited about this potential. And obviously, most important, I'm excited for Shohei.' As a pitcher, Ohtani has a 3.01 ERA and 608 strikeouts in 481 2/3 innings in his major league career. ___ AP MLB:
